Utah Jazz: Another surgery for Jazz backcourt

I think the Jazz are  | 11:19 p.m. Oct. 23, 2009
stronger this year. They may struggle until they can get a wing who can open up the inside.

However, Koufos and Fez rebound well. They also chip in a few points. The rebounding is big. If Okur has back problems or needs rest on a back to back Koufos/Fez can buy him some minutes. They rebound well enough to offset their fouls and TOs. If they can clean up their game and get better at producing points the Jazz could be formidable.

Mathews, Maynor and Price can play defense but get abused by larger guards. Korver's defense was not great but his ability to open up the inside is crucial to replace.

DWill may have to play 2 a lot more. The 2 PG offense is very potent for the Jazz. That coupled with better rebounding makes them dangerous. Having to play Mathews and Maynor will create depth later in the year.

The big question is about potential trades and the timing of those trades. I expect the Jazz to keep Boozer if he is playing well (he will) and maybe work some deal for Harp (assuming he can't play).

With Millsap playing 3 at times and DWill playing 2 with Maynor or Price the Jazz can get by until CJ and Korver get back.

It is not ideal but the 2 PG offense creates major problems for other teams defensively. AK also gets a few assists. Okur may have to move outside more often to open up Boozer but if Millsap is playing 3 the rebounding does not suffer.

AK can act as a point forward when DWill has to rest. Koufos and Fez can back up Okur well enough most nights so the Jazz can get by if they don't get any more injuries.

It will be an interesting year.

Korver is toast, he will be gone at the end of this season. He is too awkward to play defense and now Maynor and Williams and Okur shoot a better percentage of 3's than he does. In fact there are over 50 other people in the NBA who shoot better 3's than does Korver so he is no longer a threat. If he stays it is for his looks not his abilities.

Between Wesley and Maynor we are going to pare down Miles minutes so he will not be missed that much. Too bad we have to do it with rookies.

It would be great to see Koufos or Fes really come on strong, so far they struggle for minutes and to put good time in on the floor. Both represent weak links for the Jazz right now.

Do you ever hear of NBA players pulling hamstrings in the offseason? I am wondering if they played as hard during the offseason if some of these nagging injuries culd be avoided.

None of you know | 9:19 a.m. Oct. 24, 2009
You two dont know what you are talking about.

Koufus and Fesenko are good rebounders and that is big to the Jazz???? The Jazz usually lead the league in rebounding. Boozer and Millsap are great rebounders. Fesenko and Koufus probably won't be getting any minutes cause Sloan claims they still struggle to run the Jazz offense.

Two point guard system? What does this mean? Sloan specifically said they won't be changing the Jazz offense. While Williams is playing the 2, he will be playing the 2. He will not be a PG playing the 2.

When teams are adding players like Artest, Jefferson and Shaq... don't expect Matthews and Koufus to be the X-factor. Everyone got mad at Sloan for not playing Almond, Koufus and Fess last year. Well... what happened to Almond? He got cut by both the Knicks and the Magic.

I really hope Fes and Koufus make it this year. But right now I'd rather see Madsen learn the Jazz offense and sign on midway thru the year.

Last night the Kings had 20 turnovers and shot 38%... and Sloan was still upset with the defense?

Just curious.... I didn't watch or listen to the game, but Im wondering why Jerry was upset with their defense when they only gave up 85 points. Anyone watch or listen that can enlighten me or is Jerry just being the old grumpy gus he always is?

Same players as last year, same problems as last year...poor defense and poor outside shooting. Why would we expect anything different?

I go to work when my back is spasming. these players are weak compared to the days when stockton and Malone played. They played through injuries every season. I miss that attitude that made me love this organization. seems like the Boozer infection has spread out-of-control

Korver played with a bad wrist last year,so we`ll see what he does when healthy,I say he pops right back into the top 10 3 pt shooters, when he and Brewer come back we`ll be fine, until then we just need to hold our own and it can be done with the team we have,Jerry rarely goes any deeper than 9 anyway and hopefully KK and FES get some quality minutes,GO JAZZ

I agree, there seems enough versatiltity this season, however I think signing Brent Barry although not a long term answer cannot hurt this squad.

It will not break the bank which would have been major concern. If he works out then maybe sign him to contract for rest of season,

Being a BArry and having heard him speak maybe he can be like a mentor-fisher type guy in the room.

He has size, can shoot 3s, no defense yeah I know but maybe 15-minutes a game or so, especially Korver out.

Having a ring always is good to have on any roster. age 36 I know, but it might be a role player worth signing in lieu of the injuries

Several more things then i will give it time to get comments before further response:

I am suprised Jerry complained about defense last night (more signs Jerry is coming around keep it up) when 20 turnovers and 38 percent shooting.

Suprised, Spencer Hawes lost his job at starting center and I noticed he did little, although I missed the game. He usually starts off the game hitting a few open jumpers and would have been a test to the defense.

He did little so the d could not have been that awful, anyone who watched game on Sacramento website can comment. Also, my biggest concern has always been leaving shooters open for 3s. I noticed Sacramento tried 19. Yes only 5 made. Were these a matter of scheme or they just shot away trailing all game by big deficits?

ESPN and SI previews this week:

Magnus-You have always believed and others on Hollinger Stats. ESPN rated Jazz 3rd division, 7th overall, SI 2nd and 5th. I think that is more accurate and chance of 1st.

Hollinger, claims Milsap-Boozer chemistry issues will affect roster and Sloan has to get tougher or players tuned out last year>

Overblown and dead?

Corver
This the clasic case of the player not wanting to interup his vacation with surgery and rehad, That is what the regular season is for. What happened to the Jazz and their work ethic? I don't think this is a rash of injuries just a change in the culture of the team where players think they can take time off for day for every little nick.
Houdini to Todd | 1:22 p.m. Oct. 24, 2009
I`m ok with bringing him in and see if he`s got anything left,The Spurs rarely release someone before they`ve sucked every last ounce of game out of em,Bowen....
Houdini | 1:27 p.m. Oct. 24, 2009
once again,KORVER HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH HIS KNEES DURUNG THE OFF-SEASON,IS THAT SO HARD TO GRASP????? he did the surgery on his wrist that he knew he needed,DURING THE OFF-SEASON
@none and others | 1:31 p.m. Oct. 24, 2009
Actually the Jazz are usually an average rebounding team ( go look at the league stats for the last couple of years) and often get out rebounded and beat by the good teams who out rebound them.

The one thing that Fez and Koufos do is rebound and that takes and keeps the ball away from the other team. It is a form of defense. Okur will have back problems and Boozer/Millsap will get dinged from time to time. Last year Collins would replace them or they would play weakly with a lot of fouls. This year K/F can fill in well enough.

The 2 PG approach is a strategy that has served the Jazz well over time and is a well known strategy that the Jazz have employed when they had the players. Sloan did not like to play DWill with Price last year as he felt he had better overall approaches. DWill and Maynor play well together.

Sloan is grumpy but he had a large lead and the Jazz goofed it away last night (no killer instinct). He also had to put the starters back in as Koufos and Fez racked up fouls.

you have a point. It makes me wonder also. If you and your family go to the Clipper game have a good time... I am seeing things within this (6-2) preseason that I have not seen in awhile, so I am willing to diminish my harsh tones that upset others last year and give this a chance, because Portland and Denver to me have talked a lot but have done little to improve, there is no reason we cannot take this division...
the jazz should have... | 7:00 p.m. Oct. 24, 2009
traded boozer, Korver, and Milsap and got a big that can score rebound and pound inside. Korver is terrible and Boozer has yet to play more than half a season! As for Milsap i love the guy but we spent to much money on him and could have got some great players but the Jazz Never have the guts to take a chance. Also Sloan needs to retire after this season, his system will never bring a championship to the Jazz. I think he is a great coach and I respect him alot but if it hasnt worked yet it will never work. I am sure that he could win a high school state championship his first year with the system he has so i hope he goes and gives it a shot. Lets make something happen jazz i am getting old and would like to see a trophy. Also we need a good shooting guard but dosent every team?
Clint to Houdini | 9:26 p.m. Oct. 24, 2009
I don't care Houdini if he had no problems. All it would take is an MRI to find out if there are any bone spurs. He should have had all preventitive measures taken during the off season. Once this was found it should have been taken care of in April. Players these days want the easy check. Even Jazz players!
Houdini from surgery | 10:46 p.m. Oct. 24, 2009
How did you know Corver did not have troubles with his knee in the off season? Are you his doctor? I guess if you shout loud enough it is so. Well to me your yelling is BLA BLA Bla BLa. I never heard of bone spurs appearing over night.

Cmon as much golfing as he did he never felt any pain in his knee?
Just a fan | 2:14 a.m. Oct. 25, 2009
It seems logical that if Kyle knew his knee was injured he would have done something in the off season. He seems to be a fairly bright guy and he is in a contract season. After this year he will need to sign with someone and would want to showcase what he is best at and he can't shoot 3's from the bench. This tells me he wasn't aware of the severity of his knee problem until recently. I just wish the Jazz would have sent him for a second opinon sooner. He would have already had the surgery and be on the mend by now. Best of luck to him....
HOUDINI | 11:07 a.m. Oct. 26, 2009
Surgery...Once again let me try to explain it to you R E A L S L O W...EVEN IF KORVER HAD A SPUR IT PROBABLY WOULD NOT HAVE BOTHERED HIM RIDING IN A GOLF CART,OR SWINGING A CLUB....SO... WHY WOULD HE HAVE AN MRI ON A PROBLEM THAT HE DOES`NT EVEN KNOW ABOUT? IT WOULD NOT HAVE SHOWN UP( THE PAIN) UNTIL HE CAME TO CAMP? CAN YOU UNDER STAND THAT
Houdini to Clint | 12:10 p.m. Oct. 26, 2009
If he had no pain in his knee during the off-season, why would he go for an mri? I don`t think Kyle is that kind of guy,he wants to play,I think he wants to be in there all 48 minutes,he`s a tough kid who loves the game
