It's good to see that the Conference has secured another bowl for the Utes to play in and win against an inferior opponenent when they can't win a conference championship most years!

re: Great Foresight!

Must be a disgruntled, obselete Cougar fan to belittle the Utes current Bowl Streak. The same streak that includes 2 BCS appearances and wins over such programs as USC, Alabama, and Georgia Tech.

Meanwhile, what's your team been up to?.....
re:MIP | 8:40 p.m. Oct. 23, 2009

what BYU has been up to?
In recent Las Vegas Cougar Bowl games, they lost most of them...latest was against a 6-5 mediocre Arizona....

Yeesh!

Just what we need ... another Useless Bowl tie in!

Let's boycott these bowls until we (the fans) get what we want ... A REAL PLAYOFF.
Re: rvalens2 | 9:17 p.m.  | 9:31 p.m. Oct. 23, 2009
Right...that will work. As if anyone cares what the MWC wants.

I think it is a step in the right direction! It was getting to the point that our bowl tie ins were almost exclusively with the WAC. I would rather play the ACC No 6 than the WAC No 3. Reciently this bowl game has had LSU, Notre Dame, Miss St, to name a few. With the Poinsettia Bowl dropping the Pac 10 No 6, this is one more chance to play against a BCS team.

Boycott? | 10:10 p.m. Oct. 23, 2009
Wait a minute think we will see other 6 teams to get 6 wins? No need to boycott

This bowl will match a MWC team up with the #7 ACC team. But which MWC team? As far as my understanding goes, the Las Vegas Bowl still gets the 1st selection. Last year, the Poinsettia picked 2nd, Armed Forces picked 3rd, and the last pick went to New Mexico.

So when will the Independence Bowl make THEIR selection? Who's getting bumped? And what's the expected payout. We were getting $2.25M from the Liberty before we traded down for the $1M Vegas Bowl. $800K was allotted to the Poinsettia selectee, and the remainder 2 received the Bowl minimum of $750K.

We don't make ANY money off our bowls. Good thing the MWC hasn't had to rely on the cougar's pathetic bowl payouts and appearances like we did in the '80s. Utah has been the cash cow.

SWEET!

For SIXTEEN straight bowls (1974 to 1992) BYU carried the WAC on its back while the Utes sat home munching on chips and dip during bowl season.

And, after a 28-year absence (1964 to 1992), the Utes returned to bowl action with 6-5 record in...

the Copper Bowl

1992 Copper Bowl
1993 Freedom Bowl
1994 Freedom Bowl
1996 Copper Bowl
1999 Las Vegas Bowl
2001 Las Vegas Bowl
2003 Liberty Bowl (only bowl designated for the conference champions that Utah has ever played in)
2004 Fiesta Bowl
2005 Emerald Bowl
2006 Armed Forces Bowl
2007 Poinsettia Bowl
2008 Sugar Bowl

It took Utah almost 30 years from the time BYU played in its first bowl game, before Utah finally played in a bowl game with a half-decent payout.

Im neither a Ute or a Cougar but for ALL OF THE COUGAR FANS WHO TALK ABOUT UTAH being sooooo preoccupied with BYU, well take at look at this guru's obsession.

Good thing he knows his past-it is where BYU shines.

The present should be more closely examined to balance your "research." I know though you are not a BYU fan obsessed with the Utes BCS busting, way too cool for that.

Hilarious.
MWC IS A JOKE! | 12:38 a.m. Oct. 24, 2009
1. It's bonehead moves like this that drive the MWC further away from any chance of ever being an automatic qualifier for a BCS bowl game. This bowl game is a joke. Are MWC fans really going to drive to Shreveport, LA for a low budget bowl game?

2. The MWC needs a real TV contract. The Mountain and VS are complete jokes. For instance, the biggest game of the year in the MWC is BYU-TCU and it won't be seen by most of the country.

And people in Utah wonder why the MWC is not taken seriously...
re: $$$ | 2:52 a.m. Oct. 24, 2009
I'm a BYU fan and a Utah Alum, so I've followed both schools closely for a long time.

No need to do any "research" brainiac since it was already in the spreadsheet I update after every game.

The present says that BYU is continuing the tradition of excellence the Cougars began to establish in football in the early 70's. Excellence that Utah has only very recently begun to enjoy.

I'm a college football fanatic and I've studied the histories of both football programs extensively and, quite frankly, I'm amazed that it took Utah so long to develop a pulse in football.

From 1892, when the Utes played their first football game, until 2003, when Utah played in the Liberty Bowl, the Utes never once won a conference championship and then played in the bowl game designated for their conference champion.

How pathetic is that for a team that fancies itself as something more than a program that happened to catch lightning in a bottle twice in five seasons?

Utah has had two great seasons...

and practically nothing else in their entire 116 years of football history.
re: JOKE! | 3:16 a.m. Oct. 24, 2009
The only joke I see is people who constantly complain without offering any solutions.

That's like complaining about the weather.

Seeing a problem is easy. The hard part is figuring out how to solve the problem.

How about moving the entire populations of California, Texas, and New York to Utah.

Problem solved.

Why?

Because Utah would then have the largest television market in the country and ESPN would be falling all over themselves to give the Utah schools prime football coverage.

Back to reality...

IF ESPN owned the television rights to the TCU-BYU game:

1) There would be no Game Day in Provo this Saturday!

Why?

Because ESPN would have switched the game to the second game of a double header on Thursday night, a 9pm start that would have been missed by almost all of the Eastern Time Zone and a good share of the Central Time Zone.

2) BYU, Utah and TCU would be playing almost all of their games on Wednesday or Thursday night.

3) The MWC would be getting about half the revenue they were getting in the previous contract with ESPN.

Nobody in the MWC likes the current system.

What's your solution?

Grow up. Part of a rivalry is boasting your past. All teams do it everywhere. This aggie/ute fan isn't good at hiding his pathetic attempt to bash BYU.

This is a great bowl! Playing the ACC is FAR BETTER than playing the WAC. So glad we have relief from some crazy bowl tie ins we have.

They (I mean Zoobs) drive to Sin City.

Me? I'd fly to Dallas/Ft Worth and then drive to Shreveport.

Talk about taking a big step backwards. This has consistelny been rated as one of the lowest bowl games. No doubt the previous conferences wanted out of this 2nd rate game.

Quote "[utah] happened to catch lightning in a bottle twice in five seasons..." I take that as a negative remark to the U's football program. Please don't say that the 2 undefeated seasons were simply lucky because Utah didn't destroy teams based on luck.

This season is utah's rebuilding year yet they are winning. On the other hand, this is BYU's season for domination yet they lost to FSu (which BYU claims were the result of "27 simple mistakes") and TCu (Bronco blames 54 simple mistakes).

Great JOB BYU while returning most of your offensive stars while UTah RETURNED NONE!!!!
