Isn't it just a little disconcerting that the more in depth aspects of LDS theology and practices are in line with and justified by ancient Egyptian religious beliefs and practices and not the religion and practices of the ancient Hebrews, who were God's chosen people?

Only Mormons should be obsessed with eternity like the Egyptians, BYU professor says?. Not the rest of the World to?. And other Church's as well?. Just because some BYU professor says so?. Are not other Church's also studying the views of eternity and eternal life from the ancient Egyptians that shows that there are significant touch points between the Egyptian concepts and the concepts and not just what Mormons encounter in their faith alone?. It sounds all one sided to me that Andrew C. Skinner talks like the hippie movement of the make love not war 70's era here. The evidence that God is the same in ancient times and civilizations as he is in modern times is not new news. We all know that. This plan that God has for us was not made up on the spot in the 1800's either. When the LDS Church came into play. Tell us something we don't already know. We Mormon's come from the ancient Hebrews, who were God's chosen people. Why confuse this fact again, this time at BYU?.

Oh I am sure the tea sipping mormon Sen Hatch that credits BYU with his success, will be doing carewheels all around BYU soon after this. Barack Obama is making his first major address to the Jewish community since taking office. Does this mean he'll address the LDS Church?. We Mormon's come from the ancient Hebrews, who were God's chosen people. After all Obama has long maintained that he is an ardent supporter of Israel. Are not other Church's also studying the views of eternity and eternal life from the ancient Egyptians that shows that there are significant touch points between the Egyptian concepts and the concepts and not just what Mormons encounter in their faith alone?. The evidence that God is the same in ancient times and civilizations as he is in modern times is not new news. We all know that. This plan that God has for us was not made up on the spot in the 1800's either. When the LDS Church came into play. Mormons should be obsessed with eternity like the Egyptians. Just like Obama also. Or will it be after the protests outside his Office again?. RIGHT?.

IMPO...obsessing about anything isn't healthy. I would prefer that this professor taught his students to focus upon the here and now. Concentrate on living your lives, learning to love your families unconditionally, and on service to your fellow human beings...and eternity will take care of itself.

The whole human family should focus on eternity, as stated below:

And I would that I could persuade all ye ends of the earth to repent and prepare to stand before the judgment-seat of Christ. (Mormon 3:22)

More fear mongering from guest commentator.

Human beings have more than enough to focus on, in simply providing for themselves and their families on a daily basis.

While there is certainly nothing wrong with repentance, and with preparation...the focus should be here, and now.

This is what we're here for. To live our lives, to learn to love one another, and to provide for the needs of our earthly brothers and sisters.

Eternity will arrive soon enough. And for those who have focused their lives on learning how to show our love for the Savior through caring about, and providing for not only the spiritual needs, but also the physical needs of our brothers and sisters...there will be no need for fear, and certainly no need for trepidation as we approach the Throne to be judged according to our words, and according to our actions in life.

It's just easier to think about eternity when you realize how fair it's going to be.

Kevin, you are probably too young and probably not so well versed in relevant history of the specific "eternity" you mention.
No priesthood for blacks? Indian placement? plural marriage? United Order? etc., etc. Eternity is a much-maligned concept (outside of the mathematical construct) or why do you often hear of the "eternities" (more of 'em)?
Perhaps you just need to either hit the books or, just sit back and evolve like the rest of us.
