Bleak space report isn't deterring ATK officials

Obama Neglect of NASA | 4:36 a.m. Oct. 23, 2009
Obama campaigned on new priorities and "hope and change." One of his earliest platform positions was to cut NASA funding as being a low priority. The Augustine report basically says back to Obama, that a manned space program is important for a great nation, and that the resources his (Obama) office of management and budget is planning for NASA is simply inadequate. Obama had planned to gut NASA funding by $3 billion a year over the next 10 years. (I guess ACORN getting $5 billion in the STIMULUS package was a higher priority). So to ATK workers who have lost and will lose their jobs, this is Hope and CHange smacking you right between the eyeballs. I, for one, am praying for Hope and Change in 2012!!!

The poor and hungry could absorb every extra penny the country has and still be poor and hungry. We need to spend our money on something besides social services. Let's go to the moon and Mars.

If you look back on history you will see how going to the moon in the 60's was not just about beating the Soviet's. It also created jobs around the country. If you want to help out this ecnomy, creat jobs. A great way to creat jobs is by funding NASA.

People are forgetting the great advances in our technology created by NASA. If we cut funding, not only will we lose jobs but our technology will suffer. The best way to stimulate the economy is to put money into engeneering not to take it away. I for one believe we should increase funding to NASA.

If you want our children to dream big like Obama talks about, then why are you cutting funding on what our children are dreaming to be? I f

Jeff must have slept though his physical science classes in school. More has been done for the "poor and hungry" from inventions and spin-offs from the space program, than anything this country has ever done, except for perhaps the spin-offs from WWII. We could start with microwave cooking on to weather and communications satellites, and keep on going, but run out of space in this comment section.

When Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain decided to finance Columbus, Spain vaulted over Portugal and the other European nations to unquestioned world leadership and power. Opening of the New World brought a flood of wealth and eventually government "by the people for the people." Apparently there are those like Jeff that have lost the desire to explore, not only in space but in all areas of science.

NASA and the exploration of space created a need for scientists and engineers that have created better life for even the "poor and hungry." Without these programs, there would still be the "poor and hungry," but there would be a lot more of them. The "poor and hungry," in the United States today live better than royalty of a millennium ago.

Don't expect Obama to save the manned program, post-JFK liberals generally aren't NASA fans.

It combines several things that make them uncomfortable:

(1) Missiles.

(2) Defense contractors.

(3) Military men planting the American flag in new places.

(4) America doing anything unilaterally and being the first to do it.

(5) Texas, Alabama, and (sometimes) Florida.

I predict the administration will launch a few navel-gazing global warming satellites and be content with that.
