FYI... they were 370 gallon external fuel tanks.
Maybe it's time to consider moving explosives to Wendover. Fighters from Hill could pick up their ordinance there before doing their exercises.
For everyone's information, the base was there first and if anything goes its the too close homes and inhabitants. If anyone in the vicinity of the base don't like the noise and risk, that is their fault for moving there. You must also fault the cities, developers, and tax greed for endangerment of citizens. Condemn the homes and reestablish the safe buffer zone around the base it once had.
So don't think for once that the military will be changing its procedures because of a few that now realize maybe being that close isn't such a good thing. The people that moved close put themselves in harms way and no one else to blame.
before comments are made and posted someone should think thru whats said. So you think a plane should take off land at a wwII airfield with disintegrating runways, have all the associated logistics on hand 175 miles away from the primary base, relaod the airplane for a 10 minute flight to the range then what? everybody comes back from wendover? Hill AFB eemploys 30 thousand people proper, the 388th FW trains and pratices for war and are key to our efforts around the world. yet all it takes is a few ignorant people to say "oh my gosh they have live bombs!" Duh,,,it is extremely rare that the proffesionals that carry out these jobs have to do what they did, and when they do its the always the best choice. And oh by the way it was right this time too and no one was hurt
Let's not get crazy here. If we call for moving, or ceaseing the use of live ammo then we are calling for the end to the most important reason that Hill gets passed over when bases are screened for closure. The West Desert LIVE ammunition trainging area for the planes. If there is no training of that sort then over 25000 jobs and indirectly many more times that amount of jobs will be gone in Davis county. Imagine Davis County without Hill. Not a good think. If you think we have economic problems now, don't even think about what it would be like if Hill closed. How many million hours of flight with no problems have be complete, then look at this one that did have a problem and see that even with the problem there were no injuries.
I can risk the minute chance of problems in exchange for the concrete lifeblood of Davis county.
To Too Close:
And how much money would that cost? If problems like this happened often maybe it would be worth it. But one isolated case doesn't warrant that kind of reaction.
The procedure is to drop the stuff on uninhabited land, and that is what happened.
These 500 lb. bombs, were they tritonal or minol?
When I used to handle them, we were told they could not go off without fuses, etc. But one did?
Huh?
I agree with the clear thinkers. Hill was there first. Like it or lump it. These airmen do a fantastic job and put their lives on the line every day. How many of us do that? A once in a very long while there is a problem near or on the base - so what? People get killed almost monthly in cars in a very small radius of the base. Should those cars all be moved to Wendover? Get real people, we live in a dangerous world. Things happen - get over it.
If a 500 lb bomb went off there would be a significant crater, not merely a burned down tin building. Bombs WILL NOT go off without a fuse to trigger the explosion. In many cases they do not go off even with a fuse. The explosion people heard was probably the fuel in the jettisoned fuel tanks igniting, not a bomb.
Did the bomb explode? That's what all the news sources are saying... Did they get this fact wrong... like they usually do? I'll bet a free lunch that the unfused bomb did not explode. The fuel tanks burned rapidly. That was the "explosion" everybody is yelling about.
Just try this test. Next time something happens that you have first hand knowledge about, check out the news accounts and you'll they always get something wrong. Sometimes inadvertently.... sometimes on purpose if is supports their agenda. News people, ya gotta love 'em
Let's also move I-15 and every other road to Wendover. Hundreds of people die in car accidents each year on our roads. I can't BELIEVE they let roads stay open after so many deaths, and they go right past homes and through neighborhoods and cities, too. Sometimes cars hit pedestrians or lose control and crash into buildings. Sometimes cars even catch on fire. They should not be allowed to carry real gas.
LOL Yeah thanks for the laugh! We all tend to get a bit carried away when things like this happen. We need Hill!
