Man, what a stupid mistake. So much at stake for such a small amount of money. don't do it!!!! The humiliation, embarassment to your family, court proceedings, legal fees etc. is not worth it.

The DA is charging her will a felony? Society needs to spend tens of thousand of dollars to lock her up over five hundred bucks? I think the DA is not as smart as the criminal.

Phil, get real. The woman will probably get probation and a fine. "Society" can't afford to turn a blind eye to theft. Today it was $520, tomorrow who knows how much more. People don't stop at one theft. If they get away with it, they continue to steal.

The article said she'd only been the treasurer since summer. She probably didn't realize there'd be a monthly audit by the PTA president. It didn't take her long to pocket 520 bucks. It's probable that she'd keep stealing money until she was caught. She deserves some jail time even if it's a few days because of the low amount taken. That, on top of the public humiliation and other ramifications that will not only affect her, but her kids too, ought to suffice as punishment. She may very well have to move in order for her kids to have any peace. I feel so sorry for them having to attend school each day and have some kids tease and taunt them because of their mothers actions.

I wonder why she thought she needed the money. Medical bills, debts, groceries? I'm sure there must be another story behind this one.

That's a nice charitable thought. But there's a more likely possibility: greed. Most theft occurs out of greed and a sense of entitlement rather than desperation.

Apparently you do not remember much from reading this paper over the past few years (or you are new to reading the Deseret News) because there have been multiple cases where a secretary or treasurer started this and didn't get caught and kept it up and all of a sudden it is in the $10-50,000 range. If the law says taking over a certain amount is felony the it limits what the district attorney can do at the beginning.

Many people are deep in debt. That doesn't excuse stealing money. What she did is really no different than if she'd robbed a bank. The only real difference is her weapon was a pen. I feel very sorry for her kids. I'm sure lots of kids know about what happened, since it affected their school. Some parents would keep quiet to protect the innocent kids, but some would gladly tell anyone who'd listen about what she did. I hope they can start over somewhere new and save face. I'll bet she didn't think of that when she wrote the check. They always claim they intended to pay it back, but rarely do.

i knew this lady, she was my moms good friend, my mom was the one who was hurt in all this.. my mom was the PTA president. its still hard for her each day to wake up and know that someone forged her name! there's alot of kids that dont know about it, but they will know sooner or later. the PTA at the school is harshly going down because of what Annette did, it did not hurt only her and my mom, but it hurt the whole school..
