BYU football: Hall is more prepared this season

I am not worried about Max Hall, I am worried about the defense. BYU can score, but historically they can't play defense. We need the offense to score often or we will be in trouble. It is just a fact.
Rythum and timing | 8:41 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
Max seems to have found that critical rythum and timing that all great QBs have. Best to the Cougars this Saturday!

Duh,
what happened to the BYU defense that completely shut down Oklahoma?!?!
How do we stop the perennially over-rated, but good OK and let San Diego St. run all over us?

poses a lot of problems for any team. But I like what I see with the offense, I think they'll put up some good numbers. But...so might the Frogs. I'm tired of the bend don't break defense, seems there's got to be a better way. C'mon Bronco, lets cover someone, enough of the 15 yard cushions, give Bradley and Logan a chance to stay with someone....it can't be any worse.!!!
How many... | 9:26 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
interceptions will Hall throw? I'm certain there will be at least two. This defense is way too fast and (similar to Utah) was recruited to beat BYU.
From Germany | 10:17 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
...oh please. I think the Deseret News reporters have started drinking Bronco's cool-aid. Hall looked marginal against Oklahoma. He looked horrible against FSU, USU and CSU (decent to horrible teams). He has looked great against three high school teams; Tulsa, UNLV, San Diego State. In the past two years, when it counted, he looked horrible against Washington, TCU, Utah, Arizona, and Florida State.

How about we start reporting how great Max Hall is when he can truly be responsible for a victory against a legit team like TCU or Utah? Not where the defense saves his bacon...but where he manufactures the victory.

Max Hall will go down in the BYU history books with impressive stats but no real legacy of being one of the greats.
Chester | 10:30 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
Hall is ready for this one. People say, he folds in big games. What about OU? He delivered in the clutch and I believe he'll do the same on Saturday. A Conference Championship means you're the best in your league. TCU should have two by now since '05 but they missed three chip shot field goals at Utah. Now, the most relevant fact concerning all three excellent head coaches is Bronco has won two titles compared to one apiece for Whittingham and Patterson. How will BYU win? With great execution while playing more physical than the Frogs all game long. It's time for sweet revenge. BYU 24 TCU 21
Buster | 10:39 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
How do you stop DE Jerry Hughes? If you can't stop him, you can slow him down immensely by a five letter word. TONGA. Manase is the best blocker in the MWC. Hughes has great speed but Tonga can handle him and he might as well prove it now cuz he'll have plenty of chances to block similar guys next year in the NFL. Manase is a terrific all-around back and will help Max out big time in this game. Tonga's play is absolutely critical in this one folks and he's more than ready after sitting out last year and watching the O-line surrender six sacks to TCU. Manase is hungry and will play a huge role on Saturday. GO COUGS!!!
re: From Germany | 11:43 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
It always seems to be forgotten that Hall has already beaten Utah and TCU. Two years ago he led the BYU team through the conference undefeated. Granted, last year was also his responsibility and this year will go a long way to show his mettle but, don't underestimate him. He has shown that he is able. He is the only MWC qb right now that has won a conference title before.
Hope | 12:19 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
Hope that the Frogs will not bring their A game. Hope that Dalton does not out shine our Hall of Fame QB. Hope that we will not shed tears of defeat again at the the hands of faster, stronger and smarter athletes. Hope that the officials will finally see it our way. Hope that our defence will not tire from the onslaught of relentless determination and exicution, directed from one of the best coaches in the country. Hope that the best defensive player can be neutralized by our disguised plays and mis-direction. Hope that we will not be embarrassed by refusing to select the right players, the right plays, the right coaches from long ago. We can only learn how to take our team to the next level, by imitating our better conference brothers. Visions of Kruger not tripping at the 5 yard line. Visions of a sea of red engulfing the field at the end of the game. Visions of a sea of Black and Purple engulfing the field at the end of the game. No, not 2008. Rather, 2009.
Phatav8r | 12:52 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
Germany, you are wrong. He will be a great.

Hughes is getting a huge billing, but take a closer look. According to the NCAA, he only has SEVEN (7) official sacks (sorry MWC record keepers), and he got FOUR(4) of those against SMU (1) and Texas State? (3). He had ONE (1) against Clemson, and TWO (2) against CSU.

Hughes is no doubt a disruptive force, but compared to a player like Jeremy Beals (starting DL for Oklahoma that is also an NFL shoe-in) who has played tougher competition than TCU, I have to say I like the chances BYU has to handling Hughes and still moving the ball on this defense.
Minerman | 1:34 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
What a fluff piece. Hall plays well against the two of the worst teams in the conference and all of the sudden he's Jonny Unitas? He's still in the top ten in INT's for the season (tied for 8th) out of 120 NCAA teams.

Look at how he plays against even half decent offenses. Oklahoma? 14 pts. That last drive was nice, but where was he the other 58 minutes? Florida? please. And TCU is head and shoulders above any of the teams BYU has played so far this season. Part of it is the offensive coordinator not putting him in good situations, the rest is his gun-slinger mentality that makes him think he's better than he is.

For BYU to win this one (and they definitely can) the D has to play as good as it's played all year, the offensive line has to give Max 4 seconds minimum, Hall has to not feel consistently pressures, and Anae (?) has to call plays that play to BYU's strengths (Like Pitta and George). They do that and they can win. I'll predict a 24-21 BYU win, if...

CALBLUE | 7:21 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
Hall will need a great game as the entire offense because it is our defense that will not be able to perform. No pressure on the QB spells big trouble for the Y. Last week the SD QB had all day to look and pass, a dropped pass and some costly penalties our we may have come back with a loss. Cougs need to have a complete game to win this one.

Hall looked great against FSU.
re: Germany | 7:55 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
No QB is perfect. Max didn't look horrible in those games. He had some mistakes, but many of the interceptions were fault of receivers. The one game he looked really bad in was Utah last year. They totally figured him out, but he has learned not to focus on a single receiver (i.e. Collie). He is a great athlete. Ranked #5 in national power ratings. He'll do fine if the blockers can keep a very talented TCU team at bay.
RE: Germany AKA Ballon Boy | 7:59 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
OBviously you wrote this as you knew you would get many replies back to you, so good for you, your like the ballon boy, you are getting the attention you wanted because of the ignorant comments you made. I was at the OU game, Max Hall won us that game at the end with the gurry up offense when he got the 1st down with Pitta with 2 mins left and then threw the TD to Mckay, nice try on that one, also Max Hall is 2nd in the nation right now for ratings with QB's, BYU's offense is 6th int he nation, the argument is invalid and most likley a bored comment from you in snowy Germany. Go back to the snow you bitter insecure UTE fan...
re: 8:50PM | 7:59 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
What happened to the BYU defense that shut down OU? Well, that's a pretty simple answer. BYU's D did play as well as they could that night, but were greatly aided by the loss of Heisman QB Sam Bradford in the 2nd quarter. After that, a redshirt freshman was left to jump in the game, and take his first DI snaps without getting any reps during preparation for the game. At that point, OU could do nothing on offense and played right into BYU's hands. Their strength on D is the front 7, and when you can't throw the ball, the front 7 can dominate the line of scrimmage.

On the other hand, SDSU cannot run the ball, and doesn't really try. They throw all game long, which matches the weakness of BYU's D.

I suspect TCU will have little trouble moving the ball down the field with their offensive personnel. Dalton is similar to Ponder from FSU, except he's a better passer. He can move out of the pocket when needed, and doesn't make mistakes.

YtxPat | 8:00 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
We need to watch and prepare for Hughes. His high school coach is a member of the high council in our Stake and knows how good he is, but we can control him. Hall needs to have a good game and not get shell shocked like last year. It is home coming and a home game, so hopefully he will be relaxed. Our defense must not allow Dalton to get past the line of scrimage. He is too mobile and we must shut him down. Go Cougs!
Out comes jealousy, contempt | 8:07 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
derision, misinformation, disdain, all heaped out upon the head of this young man who had the temerity of playing football for Brigham Young University. You do realize that Hall is on track to having the highest number of wins for a BYU quarterback? Some people (or rather trolls) might say, well he had Unga, or they didn't have to do X thing, a win is a win is a win.

I live in Big 12 country, and I'll tell you that everybody here knows exactly who BYU is. My boss went to OK State, and I told him that the current Head Coach since his second year has won 80 percent of his games, and that there are some people who want him fired. He just shook his head like what I said was beyond crazy.

I like Max. He has beaten both TCU and Utah. He has beaten some teams three years in a row. I like Bronco. He embodies much of what the University and its sponsoring organization aspire, working toward excellence. They are not perfect, but expecting perfection is silly.

So please, grow up. You are beyond tiresome.

RE: AMEN BROTHERN | 8:08 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
That was the Nobel Prize, not the Pulitzer Prize that President Obama won. One is for outstanding writing and the other for great contributions. Neither of which you need to worry about.

Keep it up Utah - Your beat down is coming up soon enough.
trueblue | 8:32 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
Well, Here it is almost gameday. This Saturday is the day where BYU makes a serious claim to the conference title. This Saturday is different than other Saturdays. TCU is as good as it gets in the conference and if you are going to be the best you have to beat the best. Can BYU do it ? They are at home, Max Hall is a senior, They have some good players on offense and defense but will those players rise to the ocasion on Saturday ?
I have written this before and I write it now, I think this game will come down to the team that is the most physichal. BYU must come out intense and hitting hard. When they have a chance to hit one of those speedy guys, they must do it with great intensity. If BYU holds TCU's offense down I like our chances but I don't expect BYU to score more than 24 points on the frogs. Come on Cougs step up for this one !
PLEASE | 8:39 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
So What!!!

Max had good games against the also-rans of the MWC.

UNLV's current Sagarin rating is # 120 (less than many FCS schools).

SDSU's current Sagarin rating is # 101.

Maybe you could schedule Rich High school and guarantee Max's Heisman candidacy. That and Duchesne High would guarantee Max's spot on the final Heisman Ballot. Come on Bronco/Holmoe, schedule these teams and get Max his Heisman.

Whatever.

"I like Max. He has beaten both TCU and Utah. He has beaten some teams three years in a row. I like Bronco. He embodies much of what the University and its sponsoring organization aspire, working toward excellence. They are not perfect, but expecting perfection is silly."

So the "quest for perfection" was silly?

I wonder who will have beaten the kittens by more at home this year...a terrible FSU team, TCU, or Utah? Can't wait to find out!
Realist | 9:03 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
For Bronco to keep playing Hall is EXACTLY what TCU and UTAH hope for.......

Neither TCU nor Utah want to see a real Great College QB like Riley Nelson....

Cougars will not will the MWC with Maxie "Pick 6" running the offense, no matter how fab the defense plays! Max is a stiff and will not make the NFL!
re: Hall is Tall | 9:16 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
You probably made the same bold prediction when FSU came to town didn't you!

FYI - BYU hasn't "beaten down" Utah in 13 years. The last BYU team to beat Utah by more than a TD was the Cotton Bowl team. Meanwhile, Utah has actually "beaten down" BYU twice in the last 5 years. By a combined 60+ points.

Cougar fans are always the realist aren't they!
re: Buster | 9:30 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
Finally a decent comment is made. I usually don't read the comments in the DesNews articles because they are usually just so vacant of any rational thought and accurate data, but the comment made by Buster 10:39 pm is relevant.

Tonga is and will be the difference in this game. He will be the one to not only pick up Hughes and slow him down but also pick up the TCU blitz that they will bring, since they have to get pressure on the QB, that is what their defense is designed to do. So when they can't get to Max with their D-Line, they'll bring extra guys only to be stoned by Tonga and his helmet rattling blocks.

Should be a great game. BYU 27 TCU 16
Cougarf@n | 10:07 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
Yewts have to talk smack about what other teams have done (or hypothetically will do) to BYU because there is no basis for smack based on what Utah has done on the field this year.

Utah has looked mediocre all season against bad teams. Utah's most convincing victory was a whopping 20 point win against UNLV, a team BYU and Nevada beat by about 40. Not to mention that squeaker at CSU, a team both BYU and TCU put up 40+ points on. In fact, Utah's best game was a loss to Oregon. That's why we keep hearing about Utah's BCS wins on every single BYU article. I guess ya'll better get your chops in now before you lose two or three more games. Utah's ranking is based on last year's performance and I wouldn't be surprised by a loss this weekend to a mediocre AF team. Not hoping for it, but their performance so far this year is not indicative of success against better teams.
OU's losses to UT and  | 10:24 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
Miami are a pretty good indicator of how good BYU can be when they execute, get decent play calling and play with heart. The UT game was very similar to the BYU game. Bradford goes out early but the OU D holds UT to 16 points.

BYU can handle speed (OU has it), if they execute. BYU can score if they can get a balance between running and passing (BYU did not have Unga for the OU game).

BYU can beat TCU if they decide to play and get good play calling.

TCU has not had much of an offense and has not played anyone of note so far. They do have a good D and are well prepared to disrupt BYU's offensive timing.

Hall is good...can be great | 11:13 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
Hall has 2 10 win seasons and excellent stats. He isn't perfect but is an excellent quarterback. I love to hear how pathetic and slow BYUs receivers and backs are and how bad Hall is. If the receivers are bad, Hall is great. If the receivers and backs are decent, Hall is very good. Stats and wins don't lie. If Hall pulls through Saturday and whips the Utes while going undefeated the rest of the way, he is GREAT. If not, still very good.
cougarfan | 11:14 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
The Cougars need to make sure and tackle. If they do that and not turn the ball over, they should win the game.

GoodBye Sam Bradford! Goodbye Andy Dalton!
GO COUGARS!
re: Cougarf@n | 11:53 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
Really? Utah has looked mediocre? Ok, lets go with your theory, as that's all you ever base your comments on.

Utah's mediocre, yet is #18 in the BCS. I'll do the math for you, that's TWO spots behind mighty BYU. And ahead of BYU's so called signature win team, Oklahoma. So what does that make Oklahoma?

Apparently BYU's colossal win against OU without Bradford is counting for less and less as they continue losing.

And that embarrassing loss by 26 points to a team who is currently 2-4 is looking worse and worse. (FYI - FSU's ONLY DI win is....BYU)

And those mediocre Utes are sporting 1 loss. A 7 point loss on the road to now #11 Oregon. Unlike BYU against FSU, Utah had many opportunities to beat Oregon, just couldn't make the plays that were there.

And about predicting success against better teams...Oregon is the best team Utah will face this season. And they blew that game, on the road, with a QB starting his first road game.

It's amusing you complain about Utah fans discussing BYU, then you rant about.....UTAH. So sad.
re: Beaten Down | 11:55 a.m. Oct. 22, 2009
Hurray, BYU used to be better than Utah, in the 1990's. Now they are currently sitting on a 48-24 whipping from the Utes. And still trying to accomplish what Utah has done twice, BCS.

When you are inferior in the present, you live in the past, like Cougar fans.
re: Hall is good... | 12:00 p.m. Oct. 22, 2009
agaisnt mediocre teams.

We have all seen what happens when he faces good teams.

TCU/Utah/Arizona last year. What'd he have, like 10+ TO's combined in those games?

FSU this year. Good stats, yet made the crucial mistake that turned the tide for good with a pick-six.

OU this year. OU had absolutetly no offense at all. A redshirt freshman taking his first ever snaps with the first team in the middle of a game. He had a nice drive at the end, but how many times did Max give OU the chance to put the game away with picks? Luckily for him, OU was lucky that day to just get the snap right.

Hall is good, but like the entire BYU football program these days, doesn't rise to the occation when good teams come knocking.
ALSO.... | 12:18 p.m. Oct. 22, 2009
Another key to the game that is really important is the defensive line. I'm convinced that the reason San Diego State had so many passing yards is because the D-line couldn't put any pressure on him. However, BYU gets a good d-lineman back this week...Tialevea. BYU has a pretty big line, but tialevea had to lose some pounds to go on a mission. So he's alot quicker than he used to be. We didn't see that in the past few games because he hasn't played. He may not get a bunch of sacks, but he will be one of the unsung hero's for the defense
Red Man | 12:27 p.m. Oct. 22, 2009
For this game and Utah, Bronco needs a heavy dose of the run game. If you run it often and effective, Hall probably won't matter anyway. If you can't or choose not to run the ball with Unga the cougies will be in trouble both games. Unga and Pitta are the best players you have, not Hall.
Thats the Problem | 12:28 p.m. Oct. 22, 2009
Doman states that if Hall throws an interception on Saturday that, "He doesn't want the wheels to fall off" That is the very problem. It seems like once Max throws a pick, it really rattles him and he's not the same the remainder of the game. I think Doman needs to strongly consider putting in Riley Nelson if Max begins to lose it due to the pressure of the big game. Seriously, Put in Riley if Max starts to freak out. We desperately need this win.

We all know Utah has no chance of stopping TCU.
stone cold sober | 12:50 p.m. Oct. 22, 2009
Those that say Hall can't win against good teams are correct, Cougar fans. Case in point-He helped beat the 2007 Utah Utes. When is he going to beat a good team?
Hall No Beck | 1:15 p.m. Oct. 22, 2009
Hall is no John Beck. Beck was polished his senior year and managed the cougars masterfully. BYU beat a great TCU team that year at Fort Worth thanks to Beck. Hall ... well.. at least he isn't dull. He throws the ball up for grabs more than Brett Farve and he panics at the worst times. TCU will chew BYU up ..again...unless Hall can learn to manage the game and not panic. If I am betting on this game am spotting TCU at leat 14 points off BYU turnovers. YIKES!!
RE: That's the Problem | 1:26 p.m. Oct. 22, 2009
Not a good idea...So let's say that Hall does start to freak out and lose it and Bronco puts Riley in....How do we know that he won't freak out and lose it aswell? He hasn't played that much since he was at Utah State,(Not really known for good, composed QB's) So now we have a relatively inexperienced QB who is losing it. Then i'm sure you'll comment on here the next day about how bad a decision that was. I'd take experience and not take a chance with Riley...unless we are winning by alot.
ExFROG | 1:29 p.m. Oct. 22, 2009
Played in the 87-88 games, nearly as wound up now in anticipation. Two thoughts: BYU is on pace to exceed last years penalties by 10%. TCU is on pace to cut penalties by 40% (indicative of focus?). Three of TCU's first six opponents are top 10 Pass defenses (Clemson-4, AFA-9, UVA-10)... Hall could get his, but Dalton "should" be the difference.
