I thought the end of the sacred private clubs would result in mass slaughter on the streets. You people were dead wrong.

@ dave

Well dave, the private clubs law was repealed in June 2009. We haven't seen 2009 data yet. This data is for 2007-2008. Although I suspect like you that DUI fatalies will not increase because of the new law, pretty quick to jump the gun and lay it on "you people."

I'd just like to point out that while 16% of driving fatalities are DUI related, that means that 84% ARE NOT DUI related. 84%! So while DUI violators get the book thrown at them, there 5 times as many people causing driving deaths from texting, driving drowsy, and driving recklessly. Think about that next time you are driving sober and please pay attention.

@ Dave

Maybe it's "you people" that are the whole problem.
It's "you people" that drink and drive and kill innocent people.
It's "you people" that are "dead wrong."

People such as Dave are ignoring the issue. The issue is not that every person in this State has not been killed by a drunk driver, the issue is that at least one person has been killed, and that is too many. Dave is simply repeating the modern view that drunkenness and sloth are perfectly acceptable. This view preaches that the only thing that matters is immediate self-gratification without regard to the consequences, even if it means the death of innocent people.

@ all y'all...

Drunkeness and sloth are perfectly acceptable! Just not behind the wheel. Likewise with driving while using a cell-phone, putting on make-up, eating breakfast, putting in a CD, or generally being on the road with other, lousy Utah drivers.

The fact of the matter is that you can't legislate your way out of people's bad judgment, and legislating from a singular, absolute moral viewpoint is not much better. Be it booze or other thorny issues. Yes, we have a lot of draconian laws. Let's constructively fix that...
