Bottom line: The four-day week saves money. Less energy use, less vehicle use, and less overtime.

In addition, the four-day week is overwhelmingly popular with state employees, more employees report volunteering their time, and the State has a smaller "carbon footprint."

Bottom line: The four-day week works. Let's keep it.

I don't work for the state, but as a taxpayer I see the four-day schedule as a great way to attract and retain top talent for the state, especially in years when salary increases are not possible. The savings in overtime, energy use, etc. will just continue to grow in future years as energy costs grow.

They are trying to say the 4-10's are cutting overtime. I think it is more that in a down budget year, overtime has been forbidden in most cases, so employees aren't working it, or aren't putting in for it.

The fact that offices are open until 6:00 pm has been useful for me. Sometimes, I can't make a call until after 5:00 pm, and all state offices are open for another hour so it makes it more convenient for me.

Less overtime is probably more related to budget cuts than to 4x10. Has anyone studied worker productivity? Soft costs never seem to be any scrutiny.

State employees don't get paid overtime anyway so there is no way there can be any savings. State employees get comp time which just shifts the workload to when the most work is needed. Claiming that there was a savings is just creative bookkeeping in an effort to show the program had any value, which it doesn't.

Also, as a state employee I find the numbers that claim to "love" the program are bloated. Every survey given is twisted to only show that desired result. Asking all the folks that I work with and the number is more like 50% who like it and most of them were already working the 4-10's before the change. The rest of us can't wait for it to go away.

Less vehicle use just means less work being done as you would expect with one fewer day to be out and about.

Shifting energy use to 4 long days saves little, 40 hours of lights is still 40 hours no matter how you split it.

In a down economy, the state saved money! Even when fuel costs went down instead of up, the state saved money. So are we to forget all about that, and ask other government agencies how it affected them? They have been watching the state to see how 4-10s will shake out. If it is good, then they will change to 4-10s. So why are we even thinking about "Change" back to the old 5-8s?
