Could the COUGARS repeat their meltdown?

NAW.
What could have been... | 9:05 p.m. Oct. 20, 2009
After BYUs stunning and unforeseen victory in Arlington, some of us hopeless romantics envisioned Saturday's dream match-up of 6-0 TCU vs 7-0 BYU.

Unfortunately reality in the form of Bobby Bowden and his Seminoles intervened puncturing that dream.

Even with ESPN's Game Day crew coming to Provo for the first time-a lot of the dream matchup luster is gone.

Hopefully Bronco has the Cougs totally prepared both mentally/emotionally and physically for the very intimidating and physical group of Horned Frogs coming to town.

Go Cougs!!!
re: REPEAT | 9:26 p.m. Oct. 20, 2009
"Not so fast my fine friend" to paraphrase our beloved Lee Corso.

Afraid that Bronco will have some excuse or another after the game about his failing to prepare or motivate or _________ (you fill in the blank) the Cougars for this big game.

We can only hope that the stars all align, certain key players avoid the recent flu bug, etc., etc. and the Cougs come away with a much needed win.

This really could be a program defining game-although many of us thought the same thing about the OU and FSU games.

My only concern about a BYU win is that it almost guarantees another BCS berth for Boise State-after we take TCU out of the hunt. An undeserving BSU at best.

Dear re:Repeat | 1:44 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
Your problme is you can't stand honesty. Bronco is bruntly honest when he says he and the coaches didn't do their job. Sometimes the coaches do all they can and the players get a little big headed and don't feel they can be beat. Then it doesn't matter what the coach does. I worry about the mental and emotional swings of this team. Two years in a row they were riding high only be to blasted out of the sky. I say fire the pscyologist and get one who knows what he is doing.
Norge Coug | 4:44 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
After all the success Kerley had running the ball last year against the Y it's surprising to see he's only carried the ball 8 times for 21 yards total all season. (And he's played in every game.) It will be interesting to see how often he runs the ball this week.

I am thrilled to have TCU coming this weekend to Provo. What a momentous opportunity for the Cougars. I am so excited for them. I think they will be well prepared and have a brilliant game plan to wear down the horned frogs. This is going to be a great game. Bring it on.
TCU | 7:21 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
You think FSU spanked BYU, wait until TCU gets a chance at the Cougs. TCU 45 BYU 10
Pray for a miracle | 7:26 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
No one gets that TCU is FSU and OU combined, they are very fast and very good. Byu will need a miracle to win this, our D-backs are the worst in all of college football, I dont get these articles about them? Our 5 foot corners that have to play 45 yards off recievers so they dont outrun them and catch the ball right over them, notice SDSU gameplan... bomb it everytime and it worked... TCU can easily beat BYU with its speed on offense and D. Thank goodness its HC weekend, we have gameday coming and its at home, hopefully with all those combined we can win.

Who will be the UCLA this year? I was at the UCLA and TCU game last year and at the OU and Tulane game this year. BYU looked like UCLA at the TCU game last year and again at the FSU game this year. Lets hope TCU looks like UCLA last year and OU this year.

Go Cougs!

My money is on TCU. I'm a BYU fan, but they just don't have the mental toughness.
Tired | 8:17 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
The article stated: "On Saturday, the Cougars are hoping they can prove they are better than what they showed a year ago."

They already proved they are not a better team. What happened to them last year with TCU happened again with Florida State. They read the press reports, get a big head, waltz in thinking they're all that, and get blasted.
Comes down to this.... | 8:18 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
Mistakes. BYU's defense is designed to make teams inch down the field to get TD's. Their DB's play so far off the ball, they dare you to hit the underneath stuff. That theory is great, when the other guys aren't very good. TCU has a very good QB, who rarely makes mistakes with the ball, and can scramble to get 1st downs. TCU also has explosive WR's who will get the underneath stuff, but can stretch those into longer gains. Kerney can provide good field position also.

On the other side of the ball, TCU's DB's can cover Chambers/Ashworth man-up all over the field. That leaves both safeties to help with the TE's and RB's on the short stuff. TCU will force Max to take the dump downs, and they have the athletes to converge and keep those as short gains. Nothing deep, very few big plays.

So the game will come down to this, which QB will make the mistakes as their team slowly moves down the field. I'd sure feel better about inching down the field on BYU's D than on TCU's.

I have this feeling that the home field advantage will play a big role in this game. Air Force almost beat TCU at Colorado Springs. When it comes to league games, it seems like the home field plays a significant role in who wins.
Workindev | 8:28 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
How did the SDSU gameplan work? Did you perhaps notice that SDSU lost the game last week?
SoCalTrueBlue | 8:58 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
TCU coaches are smart. In most games so far they have run far more than pass. Against BYU they will throw deep and often just as SDSU did. If BYU wins, it will be because Scott Johnson has a great game and picks off 1-2 Dalton long passes. If we lose, it will be because Dalton has a great game. I pick BYU 30-27.
Smurf Turf Fan | 9:04 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
BYU will beat TCU and BOISE will go to the BCS, yet again. Thanks BYU and GO WAC!!!!!!!!!
re workindev | 9:04 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
Ya I saw the game did you?? We were 20 point favorites which really means we needed to win by 30 to make ourselves not look like a average football team and we barely won by 10. Their reciever had a career day VS us with almost 200 yrds recieving and SDSU basically scored at will besides the end of the game, dont act like BYU just dominated that game and SDSU didnt throw all over us, give me a break.
re: Workindev | 9:25 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
SDSU put up 28 points, and they are terrible on offense. The game required a near-perfect performance by Max Hall to preserve a win. SDSU's INT in the end zone in the first half really changed the game. The game was unsettled until a late FG by BYU to stretch the lead to 10.

A win is a win, but SDSU showed the holes that still exist in BYU's secondary.

re: kw | 9:27 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
I agree. We'll likely see a repeat from 2007. Saturday is expected to be clear skies, yet the field at LES will likely be flooded with 2 inches of water, just like the game versus TCU in 07.

Friend of mine produces a local sports radio show and was on the field for that game. He stood in 2 inches of water, with not a cloud in the sky.

I guess you can call that home field advantage.
UteFan | 9:37 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
cougs got killed last year. and the coug fans want to cal it a rivalry? just like the utah st. rivalry. news cougs, if you get killed every year, its not a rivalry, its a beatdown. Utah beats TCU every year and the cougs get killed. i'd like to hear just 1 coug explain how they are going to stop the TCU defense.
What a coach.... | 9:37 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
"The outcome might be the only way to answer that to what's changed"? Really, he doesn't know what has changed until the outcome? He doesn't know if he has prepared his team better, kept the media from going to their heads and all the other excuses he used last year...

"I hope the outcome will have changed, but it's too early to tell"? So you are telling me that it is to early to tell the outcome because the outcome hasn't happened yet and he hopes it will have changed?

And people make fun of Patterson.
re re workindev | 9:53 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
Dude...you said you saw the game and that, "SDSU basically scored at will..." Apparently they didn't want to score more than 28pts or 38pts for that matter

Who won?

That's all that matters. You play the game to win...not to get impressive stats!

Wake Up Call | 10:12 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
As a BYU fan, I am glad that SDSU gave us a scare last week. I think the players will be humble and a lot more focused in practice this week. Like the Nephites, BYU struggles when its players are full of pride. The defense got schooled last week on play after play, and will hopefully learn from its mistakes. I expect a great game on Saturday and hope that BYU will come out on top.
Moose on the Loose | 10:31 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
I just don't think we're athletic enough to hang with TCU. The game could be closer this year, but again, TCU's athleticism will hurt us. Utah's athleticism will also hurt us, but I think we'll get them because we're at LES.

Otherwise, my Broncos are still rolling! They would roll BYU if they played them too! Go Broncos!
TCU is not SDSU | 10:35 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
SDSU had 2 weeks to prepare for BYU and despite the rap that they keep getting, they have an outstanding team. Their athletes are the best in the MWC. What they have been missing is good coaching and with Hoke and Long they have now filled that hole.

BYU showed they are a good team by beating some great athletes with extra preparation time. TCU has good athletes also, but not as good as SDSU's.

BYU can beat the Horned Frogs this year at LES.
BigUte | 11:10 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
Uhhhhh, Cougs, your outclassed here I'm afraid. TCU's gonna beat you down.
WAIT A MINUTE..... | 11:58 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
I'm kinda shocked that all these so called fans are thinking that the TCU team from last year is coming to provo. Yes, TCU is a fast team, but they lost alot of players on defense from last year. Yes, Hughes is still around, but a double team on him should hold him. TCU is ranked 90th in take aways this year....BYU is ranked 75th in take aways. Last year at this time TCU had more than 15 take aways and ended the season with 28! This year they have 7 and the best offense they've played this year was Air Force? Or maybe Virginia? who lost to William and Mary by the way. So already we can see that the defense is not as good as last year....so stop the comparisons. This game is all about turnovers. If BYU wins the turnover battle then they will probably win...If they don't then they'll probably lose....It's that simple...Look at the facts, TCU is a great team, but I wouldn't put the defense in the same category as last year.
PP | 11:58 a.m. Oct. 21, 2009
Am I reading this right.. Some of you are afraid of TCU?... TCU?!?!?! You say we cant beat TCU??? What planet are you on I realize that there are many anti-BYU fans on here but I know there are many BYU fans that know nothing about football. BYU is 5-2 all time against TCU and 2-2 (really 3-1 except for a terrible lack of officiating) in the last 4 and now suddenly they are unbeatable? You people have a strange way of getting up for a game. And by the way, it is the press that has BYU as the number 16 teaqm in the nation, not BYU fans. So I guess others think BYU is pretty good.
Dear Utefan | 12:04 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
BYU has beaten TCU 2 out of the last 3 years, and last year was the first one TCU won since 2005 so yes this is a rivary. What a dumb statement to compare TCU-BYU to BYU-USU.

I don't disagree that on paper BYU looks to be the underdog here, but they do have some senior laden talent.
TheHailstorm | 12:20 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
Just don't see it in the cards for the Y this year. Again TCU played and won games away early flat out ran them.
I think that if we have any hope for a BCS berth it will be TCU and a change of scenery for the BCS They have seen Utah twice , Hawaii, and Boise State.3/4 won their games and Utah Gave 1.5 million dollars to the BYU athletic fund without a whimper , but a thank you ? Nope. The Blew Bloods just stuck their nose in the air as if they deserved it.
TCU would represent the MWC very well and YBU could have another hand out of winnings. Some other team hands them a million dollars from a bowl game they don't even have to lose and they still win!
BYU needs their arrogant, self righteous butts kicked so maybe one day they wake up and join reality that they are holders during the season and folders in the post season.
Let them win more than two bowl games in a row before puffing out the feathers and strutting their spurs.
I would like to see 48-17 TCU
BYU SCORE | 12:34 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
BYU 38
TCU 27

You heard it here first!
Keys for success... | 12:50 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
1) Run Harvey North/South, not east/west please~
2) DB's actually need to look back for the ball for a change.
3) Saftey's and LB's needs to tackle down low instead of at the shoulders.

Offense will move the ball, provided Hall has time, and Harvey has holes to run through. Every team BYU faces is more "athletic" than they are. The athletic argument is so lame...big deal.
re: TCU is not SDSU | 1:06 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
You've got to be kidding. SDSU has the best athelets in the MWC? Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!

It's one thing to try and find reasons that BYU will win this game, but to say that SDSU is a better team than TCU is just plain ridiculous.

Are BYU fans really this myopic?
slythefly | 1:10 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
Cougs you have no chance you lost to FSU. . . Any team with any athleticism is going to beat you. The Cougs do not have the speed to compete with TCU they will tear you up on your home field much like FSU did and i do not want to hear about you beating Oklahoma they are a bust this year as well
Bored Ute Fan | 1:57 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
I feel terrible for the UTEFANS they make the most ignorant comments... seriously goto your blog, I know noone gets on them bc no one cares and everyone cares about BYU but common. It is so funny to me how bored you are of your own team that you are always on our blog, the best part is I am sure you will respond to this bc you read these blogs and wait to fire something at a BYU fan... good one, way to make the U look even worse than losing to Oregan who WAC BSU beat, nice try, talk to us when you beat a ranked team this year.
ACC | 2:21 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
If BYU tackles well at or near the line of scrimage, it will bode well for the Cougars. BYU will also have to intercept TCU on several occasions. If we use realsitic, common sense regarding the sideline offensive play calling it will be helpful for when BYU controls the ball and takes it time to drive the ball down the field, the other team's defense wearies. If those things happen, then we Cougar fans will be happy. If they don't save your voice for the choir.
McKay | 2:27 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
Re: Re: TCU is not SDSU
I'm pretty sure that SDSU has more players in the NFL than any other team in the MWC, including TCU so laugh it up buddy but the laugh is on you.
Re: Hailstorm
How do you know BYU took the money without a thank you? Did you hand them the check? Did you see them put their nose up and act like they deserved it? I'm willing to guess you have NO idea what you are talking about and are just a hater that loves to look for fault in anything BYU does or says. In fact I'm willing to bet you aren't even a true fan of the Utes, just hate the Y so it's seems logical to jump on the Utes bandwagon. Must be a miserable way to live!
re: re: TCU is not SDSU | 2:28 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
Buddy, get your facts straight or stop embarassing yourself with your "so-called" football understanding.

What was said was that SDSU had better athletes than TCU, not a better team.

Great athletes does not guarantee a great team.
BlueElvis | 2:30 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
I am a dyed-in-the-wool BYU supporter, BUT--if I had to put my hard-earned money on the outcome, I'd put it on TCU. My heart wants the "Y" to win, my head says TCU.
more of the same on Saturday | 2:39 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
get ready for another thumping BYU because TCU is way better than you. Better break out the humble pie for the homecoming crowd too.

Prediction: TCU 27 BYU 14
close game | 2:41 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
I am thinking this is going to be a close game that goes to the wire. Who ever wins I doubt the margin will be greater that 4 points.
09 loss will sting more. | 2:50 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
BYU is preparing for this game all wrong. They are going go get destroyed again. All we will see at RES after halftime, is empty blue seats.
Last year was sweet | 3:10 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
I savor that game everytime I think about it. I get those funny butterflies in my tummy everytime BYU loses. Not often, just enough to "keep um" humble. Kruger is still open.
TRUE Blue | 3:16 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
A win is a win. BYU actually did BEAT SDSU. I wish everyone would quit crying because they didn't win by 3 or 4 touchdowns. It was a good experience for them. They'll be focused on Saturday and will step up big time because they are the underdogs in this one. It will be a great game.

GO COUGS!!
Cougarf@n | 4:25 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
These yewt fans are absolutely right. In fact, I predict BYU will lose every game this season, attendance will actually dip into negative numbers and Bronco will not only be fired at seasons end, but will have to pay back his salary for the last four seasons. Furthermore, I predict that BYU actually lost every game against TCU and the five wins against TCU compared to TCU's three wins against BYU were actually just a clerical error. Additionally, I predict BYU's undefeated conference runs in '06 and '07 never really happened to say nothing of passes to Harline who and Collie what. The rules of nature, logic and reality have no bearing on me or my posts, but I am always right.

PS This post is not endorsement of hallucinagens or controlled substances.

K.M.A Mckay,
I graduated in 1990 from the University of Utah and love Utah sports , Like take a look at the Deseret Dual from last year and you'll see that we dominated the sports match up.
I don't care for Donkos double speak and the two faced byu fans who post remarks from 1984.
Win the bowl game instead of the fireside and don't insult me. I do not like the hypocritical , arrogant, snotty remarks that you blew bloods remark here. Just say thanks for the money and get your head put of the clouds.
I am active LDS , Do my callings in the ward as best I can , and pay my tithing.
I Love being a Ute and you'll notice that Thomas S. Monson is a proud alumni.
Don't make up smack that has been cut from the same cutter, as the YBU girls.
Ernest T. Bass | 5:35 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
byu will win because were humble and great.
Re: Re: McKay | 5:39 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
A lot of people graduate from the U and aren't fans of the U but anyways... That's your choice not to like Bronco and the "so" called 2 faced BYU fans, again that's your choice but you still didn't answer my question... Did you write the check to BYU and not get a thank you? Were you there when BYU supposedly took the check and and walked away with their nose's up in the air? So again I say that you have NO idea what you are talking about. You may have graduated from the U but it still seems like you are more fueled by hate for BYU than love for the U. And what's up with you feeling like you need to express your worthiness to me as active LDS? Check your complex bro, I never questioned it. And finally... I'm wondering if Utah or their fans ever thanked BYU for the checks they received from them throughout the late 70's, the entire 80's and some of the 90's? Just wondering
BleedCougarBlue | 7:04 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
I've waited AAAAAAAALLLLLL year for this game.

Here's what I want:

REVENGE.

I'm not saying we should play dirty or cheap.

Far from it.

I just want to, metaphorically speaking, hit TCU about a hundred times in the face, shock the daylights out of them, cleat them in the chest while we run right THROUGH them and defeat them as decisively as they did to us last year.

Hunger.

It's all about how bad you want it.

The team that wants it more will win.

C'mon Cougs!, REMEMBER last year.

You can do it!

BYU 31 - TCU 27
Texas Cougar | 7:32 p.m. Oct. 21, 2009
For me, this game would be sweeter than beating Utah or OU! That game last year stung. The worst part was that they didn't just walk all over us...they danced. It reminded me of when Chance Harridge trashed talked us as he blew us out in 2002. Too bad we lost to them again in 2003 (during the dark years). It would have been nice to pop him in the mouth during his senior year!

I would be completely satisfied if we came out more intense than TCU. If a few of our defenders can really pop their receivers or Dalton (I know that's a lot to ask from a team that doesn't make defensive highlight reels). Or if our running backs can really get a good game going. It will be unacceptable to me if the BYU players don't appear more amped up for this game than TCU.

Also, here's to Max Hall keeping his head and staying off the turf! Go Cougars!
