It goes to show you what hard work can achieve. And that's what is expected in the NFL, in no uncertain terms.
Keep it up Austin!
Eugene | 11:42 p.m. Oct. 19, 2009
Collie will make a name for himself and Manning will find out soon that he is a go-to guy. The Colts got a keeper at below market price.

Funny that a Coug fan would think this like me, but Collie is better in the NFL which has given Max Hall the opportunity to spread the ball around since last year Collie got Hall's first attention on every play. The Cougs are doing better with Max spreading it around.
Good job | 11:51 p.m. Oct. 19, 2009
Glad to hear he is doing well and hope he can continue. Wow, three comments and not a single nasty comment from a Ute doomsday blogger. How wonderful.

Good luck and keep up the good work Austin!!!! Cougar Nation is always behind you with support!!
Woulda been fun | 1:04 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
to see Collie and Max finish their senior seasons together, but it's great to see Austin having so much success early in his NFL career.

BYU fans were confident you'd represent the Cougars well in the NFL Austin.

Good luck! you earned it, as Vince Lombardi would say!

great job collie! your gonna be one of the best NFL recevers if you keep this up. GO COUGS!

Geeeez Good job, nasty comment? we (Ute Fans) enjoy this article, Collie’s gone; everyone knew Collie was recognized as a key player, BYU’s true threat on the field, to me under rated, Max Hall over rated! Austin Collie Made Max Hall look like a great Q, now that’s Collie is gone Max is what he is…. Substandard. And don’t comment on Hall the rest of the season will substantiate a Q that cracks under pressure. Best to Collie… fun to watch!

Re: Eugene

Nice thought, but inaccurate. Austin was among the best players to ever play at BYU, losing his skill set can in no way be considered an advantage to the team. You would not argue that BYU would be better without Pitta this year.

It was also the correct decision for him to leave for the NFL. He had the skills required to succeed at the next level. We miss him, but wish him well.

If you want to argue that it is good for the development of other WRs to not have Collie around, I will listen. Quick review of the stats from last year and this year shows Collie received about 2/3 of the WR passes in '08. The distribution is more even among the WRs this year, which should leave BYU more experienced at WR in 2010 than they otherwise would have been.

Collie was the focus of the offense because he had the most talent (14.5 yds per catch, and he never dropped balls). He did more with his opportunities, and he came through in clutch situations. BYU would be a better team this year if he were available.

It's nice to see a BYU draft making an impact right away. I don't follow the NFL, but always look on Mondays to see how Collie performed. What a great guy!
Gotta sting | 7:41 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
for all you Ute Collie haters to see him be so successful at the next level. He'll need to do something pretty special in the NFL though to beat his best play ever - 4th and 18 ring a bell?
Go Utes | 7:41 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Austin came and did a fireside in CA with his brother and dad a few years ago. It was very impressive. they seem to be a great family.
I'm not surprised he's excelling in the NFL (Not For Limbaugh)
Hoosier Cougar | 7:48 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
[I'm not sure how knowing a foreign language makes a difference with a transition into the NFL, but...] I'm glad Collie's playing for the Colts.
confused | 7:50 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
How can Brother Collie be doing the right thing either on or off the field when he's playing football on Sundays?
Congrats. | 7:58 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
I make no bones about the fact I am avowed enemy of the Cougars, that said I get excited when I watch Collie play, he has great hands and he's smart with the ball. Plus it's refreshing to see an NFL player without the chest thumping, ego-maniacal attitude so prevalent in pro sports these days. Keep it up Mr. Collie hope to see you at the Super Bowl!
Rick | 8:13 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
That substandard QB was MWC offensive player of the week last week. An award he's won many times. Max is no Ty Detmer, but who is? I get tired of everyone saying because he's not the greatest BYU ever had that he's not great. He's an elite college QB. Even with his interceptions (remember, Bret Favre is a top interception thrower) he will end up winning more games than anyone in BYU history. The guy simply wins, and he's got one of the best passing efficiencies in the country.

Most teams wish they had a QB that good.
Ute Fan | 8:14 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Collie's success in the NFL doesn't surprise me. He is a great receiver. It's so nice to see so many athletes from our Utah schools enjoying success in the NFL. It makes it fun to watch, but not as fun as college football.

Looks like you got your education from BYU "Ute Collie haters to see". Nice.
Re: confused | 8:21 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
At least he's not mucking out septic systems like you are. It's the methane gas that is causing your confusion.
Minnesota Ute | 8:21 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Collie is a great player, and simply a great person. But as a Ute, when people say things that seem silly (i.e. pumping Lenny Gomes gas), the harrassment that follows is appropriate. Collie implied that his success on the field was partially due to divine intervention, which if you really believe that God cares who wins football games, is laughable.

See you in church.
Collie | 8:22 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
I have become an NFL fan and a Colt fan just to see number 17 play and continue his exciting career. Three touchdowns is impressive but it was more impressive to see that he has the trust of Manning, this early. If you watched the last game, 8 catches for 97 yards and Manning was looking for him. 4th and 18 will live on in Cougar and Ute History. Go number 17, you were great to watch at the Y.

rigormortise | 8:30 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
I'm not suprised by his success...he's smart...he tied the defenders shoelaces together in picture 2 of 2. That's smart!
Lassie Isacollie | 8:32 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
confused -- that was a good one.
Impossible | 8:41 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
There's no way Austin Collie can be successful in the NFL. Why, there were dozens of Ute fans who told me last year that he was too slow to play pro ball and that his success was due to playing in a weak conference.

Brian Johnson was the one who was destined for a Pro Bowl career in the big leagues, they said.

Are you saying the Ute fans didn't know what they were talking about? My faith is shaken to the core!
re: confused | 8:42 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Why yes u are.
He's da man | 8:44 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
After reading this article it's a lot easier to understand why Max wanted to throw to Austin so much. Austin, we hope you have a great NFL career!

GO COUGARS!!!!
Collie has made big impact | 8:46 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Collie is on NFL Live every week it seems. Collie is one of Mannings favorite new targets and has already made a big impact with the Colts.
Froder | 8:49 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
I am a atlanta falcons fan, but i have taken a liking to the colts now that collie plays for them, it was great to see collie and manning standing togather being interviewd by reporters.
re: Re: confused @ 8:21 | 9:09 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Are you mocking my less-than-sweet-smelling profession? I will forgive you and will pray the Lord to do the same.

I would rather continue to muck out septic systems 6 days a week and inherit a mantle of eternal glory after this life than inherit the lake of fire and brimstone that Brother Collie is athletically plunging into.
re: Anonymous 7:21am | 9:12 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
"...BYU’s true threat on the field, to me under rated, Max Hall over rated! Austin Collie Made Max Hall look like a great Q,..."

As I remember it, u guys were constantly saying Collie was "overrated" when he played at BYU. And now you're saying Max Hall is overrated in spite of his great QB rating and number of wins? Look, I don't necessarily think Max is a shoe-in to play in the NFL but he definitely is not overrated at the college level.

utah fan twisted pretzel logic raises its ugly head once again. Oh wait, now that I think about it that's not correct since it has never lowered its ugly head.
Bob in line | 9:14 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
OK, I am eating my words a bit. I predicted that Collie's playing days were over and he would do exactly nothing in the NFL. I'm happy I'm wrong.

What happens to Collie when Anthony Gonzalez comes back? He is the Colts regular slot receiver, who is hurt right now. Does Collie get benched or buried?

I wish this story addressed that. I did hear the interview after his 2-td game and he mentioned Gonzalez as one of his mentors. This is good though I'm guessing Collie gets benched or plays sparingly off the bench.

In any case, good for Collie. It is fun to watch them play.
Sabbath | 9:17 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
There are hundreds of occupations that require people to work on the Sabbath:

doctors, utility workers, police, firefighters, hospitality workers, etc.

For anybody who criticizes an athlete for working on the Sabbath, here is a short list to consider of the things you should avoid to ensure that YOU don't force other people to work on the Sabbath:

using any type of public utility or energy source
going on vacation
staying at a hotel
driving or using any kind of public transportation
getting sick
having an accident
watching television
listening to the radio
using the internet
having your house catch fire
getting robbed
having an emergency
dialing 9-1-1, EVER

Anonymous | 9:44 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Should covenant-making LDS members spend much of their sabbath days entertaining the masses by playing a game? (That's quite a stretch from a healthcare worker taking care of the sick of saving a life). Should they be willing to sacrifice fame, fortune, and personal ambition to do what the Lord has commanded? Each person much choose. I'm waiting for a top draft pick into the NBA say he is willing to take a significant pay cut, but he won't play on Sunday. Wouldn't work in the NFL as almost all the games are on Sunday.
Congratulations on your success Collie.
Ernest T. Bass | 9:51 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
He's the best reciever ever from Utah.
re: Re: confused @ 8:21 | 9:09 a | 10:01 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Your judgemental demeanor will secure you a comfy throne next to Beelzebub and his legions.
Dee J | 10:04 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
To Bob in line: when Gonzales comes back, Collie may see less playing time, but it's common in the NFL for offenses to run entire offensive sets (backs/receivers) on and off the field play after play, so I'm sure the Colts will continue to use Collie. It's not inconceivable that they will design plays featuring both Collie and Gonzales running routes at the same time.

Great to see Collie doing well, and I hope it continues - as always, staying healthy is the X-factor for NFL players.

I was also happy to see Eric Weddle making an impact with the Chargers. He's another guy with great potential.
re. a reminder etched in stone.. | 10:06 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Collie isn't working on sunday...he's just playing a friendly game of football with his closest friends...i do that every week!
To Confused | 10:21 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Glad to see you admit being confused. I don't think anybody here can help you. Have a good day.

PS Austin Collie is a stud
Byudog | 10:23 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Collie seems a bit like Steve Largent, formerly of the Seattle Seahawks..
I heart utah | 10:31 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Honestly I have always liked this guy he was great at the Y and no doubt will be great in the NFL. Saying he is the best reciever from Utah is a stretch but he is up there
BYU fan | 10:32 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Re: Ernest
I think he still has a ways to go to achieve what Steve Smith has. But he is off to a good start.
Hey Bob in line | 10:32 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Gonzales is out for another 3-4 weeks. Think about it, he had 37 catches as a rookie and 3TDs, last year I think he had 4 TDs and around 60 receptions. Both years around 600 yards. Collie should easily exceed those numbers. Do you honestly think the Colts will replace Collie and put Gonzales back into the line up?

Nice back handed compliment anyway.
Anonymous | 10:36 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
He must be living right. The Colts are undefeated.
BleedCougarBlue | 10:40 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Article quote: "Collie (4th round) has caught 20 catches for 228 yards and three TDs heading into the Colts' next game against the St. Louis Rams. That compares favorably with FIRST ROUND picks Philadelphia's Jeremy Maclin (13 for 193, 2 TDs), Viking Percy Harvin (20 for 243, 2 TDs) and Hakeem Nicks for the Giants (12 for 235, 3 TDs)."

Translation: Collie was under-rated going into the NFL draft.

Cougar fans knew it all along.

Ute fans did too. They just didn't want to admit it.

Ouch....

to ute fan; Y Fan | 10:46 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Amen man! I am a fellow Y fan but am a colt fan because Austin is such a great player. The colts of also had some BYU players in the past. Which is why I like the colts Better then any NFL taeam

GO austin
GO colts
and GO BYU!
UteFan | 10:50 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Dick Harmon back at it again. The YBU homer gushes and dribbles all over himself about making Collie the best receiver ever in the NFL. Makes me laugh. And yes I miss Collie at the "why" because it was a lot easier for the Utes to pick off Hall when they new he was throwing to Collie 4 out of 5 times. Oh well, I guess they'll just have to hang out by Pitta this year. Go UTES!
