BYU 31 - TCU 27

Ted | 8:54 p.m. Oct. 19, 2009
TCU has better athletes no doubt... much faster.... more agile.... should be a great game this time around I hope, not like the blow out last year... If cougs can't get up for this one, they deserve to lose again.

BYU is ranked 16th across the board in the AP and Coaches polls and in the BCS rankings.
Anonymous | 10:55 p.m. Oct. 19, 2009
TCU 38 BYU 17. TCU's defense is too good and their offense is good enough to score on BYU's weak D. I wouldn't be shocked if BYU ends up with 3 home losses this season because the Utes game is a toss up.
Sounds like fun | 10:56 p.m. Oct. 19, 2009
Everyone knows TCU has faster athletes than BYU. That is a given.

Everyone knows that TCU eyes a BYU tackling dummy all year in hopes of getting their dander up for beating the athletically inferior Cougars. That is a given.

Everyone knows that BYU has a lot of "Mormons" on their team and that TCU has a lot of "Christians" on their team, and that the TCU players hate to even shake hands with the Cougars before or after the game. That is a given.

But we play the game anyway because it is also about a lot of other things like sportsmanship, like teamwork, like determination, mental toughness, preparation and execution.

Last year BYU did not have a good game plan for the faster Frogs. This year they do. I can't wait to cheer the Cougars to a victory over a superior squad.
SoCalTrueBlue | 11:26 p.m. Oct. 19, 2009
If Manase Tonga is back for this game and if the flu bug doesn't bite the Cougars team, they will step up and hold the Frogs to 27 points. BYU wins 28-27.
CALBLUE | 11:34 p.m. Oct. 19, 2009
I woould like to believe that BYU can hang with and beat TCU. After going to the Vegas and San Diego games I just don't believe we can stay with their faster players and add that we are beat up with no pass rush, it may be a long day. But they still play the game and who knows.
What is their deal? | 12:46 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
I swear Gary Patterson was seeking out bulletin board material for the BYU game. Then he found some dumb comment in an article Darnell Franchuk or whoever wrote that said "TCU is not that tough." Then he was like "OH there you see!"

I hope BYU comes to smack TCU in the mouth. These guys are starting to bother me. I'm almost starting to like them less than Utah because #1 they are usually a greater threat than Utah, and #2 their fans are starting to be juat as bad. TCU might have some quick guys but our guys can smack them around. That's what the cougs need to do this year. They did it to Oklahoma, which, I know isn't saying a lot because of the 3 losses. But Oklahoma still has athletes. In my opinion this is way more of a statement game for BYU than it is for TCU and I hope the Cougars play like it. I'm going to be screaming my head off for 4 quarters for the BYU defense to take Jeremy Kerley's head off. It's going to be a wild and crazy Saturday!
Legal Beagle | 5:39 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
I'll add to the chorus and remind the author that BYU is currently ranked #16, not #18 as written. It does help to actually check the rankings before writing. When simple facts are wrong, it is easy to dismiss all the contents of an article.

Dalton's passing vs. BYU Pass D. | 7:18 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
With the sole exception of FSU, BYU's D has been very stingy in giving up rushing yards with numbers very similar to TCUs (Who also had an off game and gave up about 250 yards on the ground to Air Force). BYU has given up 118, 37, 66, 109, 45, and 20 rushing yards in their non FSU games, and the 118 was to Oklahoma who returned 2 running backs who ruched for over 1000 yards last year. BYU has also been unusually succesfull containing mobile QBs this year holding USU's Borel to about 2YPC and UNLV's Clayton to 0 yards.

TCU is going to have to go to the air to move the ball consistently. It will be interesting. Neither TCU's passing game nor BYU's passing defense has been terribly impressive.
The Man | 7:26 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
TCU is as fast as Florida State but better all around. Look how BYU struggled with San Diego State and unless BYU figures out how to pressure the QB this will be a Florida State type of Game. I hope that the Cougs have learned their lesson. Go Cougs

PS. I have to disagree with Sounds Like Fun and even though there is a religious difference there is respect and it is good for all religions that these teams are getting so much exposure to national spot light. Look at the middle east and the religious tension and here in the US two different religions have no problem playing a sports game against each other. I have been to Ft Worth and have talked a lot of football with TCU fans and they are good people and they love the BYU game because of the competition.
BYU O-line vs. TCU's D. | 7:34 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Will they be able to open holes for the running game? Will they be able to give Hall the time he needs?. The answer to both of these questions is...... Kind of.

BYU will probably average a little over 3 yards per carry and finish with close to 100 yards. Not particularly impressive, but definately above average against a very good TCU team.

Max Hall will get sacked. He will probably get sacked several times. TCU is too good on efence for this not to happen. The key is whether the sacks result from a defender occasionally beating his man with a great play and and superior athletic ability, or simply an indication of the constant pressure that TCU is putting on Hall.

If it is the first, TCU will be in trouble. Give Max Hall time and he will be able to pick apart just about any defence.

If Hall is constantly being harried and knocked down, and is froced into trying to force huge plays, it could get ugly for BYU.

That being said, I think that BYU gives Hall enough time to throw most of the time. Renyolds has Hughs # and Tonga's blocking is the differece.

Oh, sorry. Forgot about that powerhouse FSU. Did you know their only DI win this year is that 26 point beatdown of BYU at LES? How pathetic is that!

TCU a bigger threat?

Of the last 6 MWC titles, Utah has 3, BYU has 2, TCU has 1.

In that time, Utah has 2 BCS trips, TCU/BYU have none.

Re: Sounds Like Fun | 8:30 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
What exactly is your definition of the word "given"?
Faster athletes at TCU? Probably
TCU hates to even shake hands with BYU because they are Mormons? Really, where does this come from? I doubt they even care.
TCU always has a BYU tacking dummy? I heard that last year, but I seriously doubt that they have it this year. It wasn't so much that they dislike BYU, but just that BYU was undefeated in conference for 2 years, so they were coming for them. If the tacking dummies have jersey's and helmets this year, it is probably the Utes for what happened last year.
This has been a pretty good rivalry over the years though. That first year in the conference was hard to swallow because they squeezed by both the Cougars and Utes on questionable play calls.
I hope it is an excellent game, but none of the things in "Sounds Like Fun"'s post are "given". Especially the last two, which are way out of line.

I would like to know if any of you people that make the comment " TCU has better/faster Atheletes " know any of those supposed atheletes personaly ? I am certain that you don't and you just quote what you hear from someone else. Reading some of your comments is kind of like watching an NBA basketball game with a profesional bowler calling the game. All you fans out there who don't realy care what happens and you just want to get your two cents in, "Go Bowling" You just make yourself sound stupid blogging on these boards.
This game will be won by the team that is more physichal. If the cougars stay back and play soft, TCU will take it right at them. TCU can execute and you can't count on them making mistakes. BYU must score a lot of points. BYU's offense will need to carry the team. They are the best part of the team and they need to show it on Saturday. And for "goodness sake" Cougar D step up and play tuff physichal defense.

I've watched TCU games for a number of years. Never heard that one. Coach Patterson runs a class organization. As does Bronco.

Re: re: What is their deal? | 8:52 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Memo to Ute fans: Urban Meyer is no longer your coach. Claiming his teams as examples of the current Utah success is like BYU fans claiming Lavell Edward's championship teams as examples of their current success: Nice for the tradition, but the era is over.

Whittingham and Mendenhall started at the same time. They have coached the same number of games. Mendenhall has more victories and conference championships; Whittingham has one very lucky BCS season and one conference championship during the same season.

Indeed, aside from the 2008 season since Whittingham took over the Utes have been a consistent 3rd place team in the MWC, which is where they will end up this year.
Cougs | 8:59 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
If the Cougs can't get motivated to smack the Frogs in the mouth for this one then the coaching staff has not done there job. This should be the most physical game of the year. You beat spead with physical play up front. The offensive line and Tonga should be motivated to run the ball. Can't wait to see which team wants this game more. If it only comes down to coaching I have my concerns.
TCU wins every year | 9:02 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Not much of a rivalry so far. TCU wins every year. BYU can't compete with TCU's athletes. I can only remember one year (John Becks senior year) that BYU beat TCU.
Re: The Seer | 9:03 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
"TCU has a better, more experienced coach than BYU."

Bronco Mendenhall is 2-2 head-to-head against Gary Patterson. Not much superiority there.

"TCU has a quicker, more stingy defense than BYU."

No one disputes that. But most analysts agree TCU has yet to encounter an offense as good as BYU's this season.

"TCU has a more effective offense than BYU."

TCU's religion | 9:03 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
TCU gets up more for the game with BYU than the game for Utah or anyone else in the MWC because the evangelicals love to hate the Mormons. It doesn't hurt the rivalry that it is BYU that has the history of success on the football field. Of course, they're not the only team in the MWC that considers BYU to be their main rival. When I attended SDSU I heard many times the refrain that "BYU is our main rival." BYU usually doesn't get up for these teams that think of BYU as their big rival. But this time, I think the Cougars will be up.

In any case, I always love it when BYU gets to play TCU in Provo.
tcu grad | 9:06 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
This will be a big game for both teams - if for different reasons.

After cheering the Frogs in several other conferences, please know that being in the MWC has been great. Utes and Coog fans have been fun and make all this rivalry talk enjoyable.

But the most fun is cheering when a MWC team is tearing up the BCS. Last year, I was sick after Utah beat TCU, but I was cheering the Utes all the way to the BCS game so they could beat one of those over-rated BCS schools.
Religion?? | 9:12 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Hey- The comments on religion are ridiculous. Show some class...This has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with two good football teams playing eachother in the national spotlight on Saturday.
There is no need for religion to be any part of these conversations. I am an AVID BYU FAN, and I think all BYU fans can see that TCU has a very good, fast team this year. We certainly have our work cut out for us, but we are playing at home and we will be up or this game....

Re: Every Year at 9:02am | 10:03 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Awesome fact-checking. "I can only remember one year (John Becks senior year) that BYU beat TCU." How about the year AFTER John Beck's senior year, when BYU was in the midst of their second consecutive undefeated run through the conference? You can't do that without beating TCU (and Utah) twice in a row. The record is 2-2 since TCU joined the MWC (same as the record against that team whose fans proclaim that it "carries the conference every year" when they win a championship for the first time in 4 years). Look it up if you want, it isn't that hard to find. And just curious: how do you remember a loss last year and 4 years ago, a win 3 years ago but can't remember a win 2 years ago? Must be tough to live with those red goggles on...I would have blocked out all memories from that year too after losing 27-0 to UNLV...
re: 8:52AM | 10:05 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Lucky BCS run for Whit? Please. It's so sad how far BYU has fallen. Their fans are so jealous of their supposed "little brothers" to the north.

Just face the facts that Utah has been GREAT twice in 5 years, while BYU has failed to be a GREAT football team in a quarter-decade.

Guess we were "lucky" to beat the mighty Cougs by 24 last year. Sorry, but the definition of Luck is what BYU did in 2006/2007 against Utah. And it's a good thing, otherwise you'd be riding a current 7 game losing streak to the Utes.

FYI - Bronco's title in 2007 was a gift by the football gods. Utah lost their QB, RB, best WR, best OL and best DL by the 2nd game of the year. And that team still had the Cougs beat in LES.

Apparently Blue is the new color of jealousy.
Ute trolls | 10:07 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
The Ute trolls throw out religion all the time to bash BYU. Now they try to pretend that TCU hates us because of religion as well. They judge us for our religion and claim it is us doing the judging. Is that the same when we play Notre Dame and Boston College - I'm sure we'll hear from the same peanut gallery.

By the way - don't you love it when big time schools bring a sacrificial lamb into their stadium for a pay day with no return game at all! Like Notre Dame will do in a few years with Utah and Michigan did last year with Utah (but didn't plan on being the worst team they've had in 50 years).

Unless it is a special circumstance like the old kick off/pigskin classics or the christening of the Taj Mahal of football we almost always get the respect of home/away or minimum of 2 for 1 from the top schools - when they have the guts to play us.
TCU is good - be prepared | 10:29 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
2005 L 51-50 OT at Home
2006 W 31-17 at TCU
2007 W 27-22 at Home
2008 L 32-7 at TCU

TCU has never dominated BYU at LES. 2005 could have easily gone the other way. Chalk that year up to all conference teams learning about TCU and how to game plan for them (everyone lost to them as they were undefeated in conference). That also was Bronco's first MWC game as head coach and everyone was learning.

I believe last year was a total over confindence issue by coaches and players a like which led to poor preparation. When we as fans look at our schedule each year and circle the TCU game as the must win if we want to win the conference it is important. They are the team most suited to beat us year in and year out. Utah is a long standing rival and those games have meaning because of that - but TCU is just plain tough and consistent.

With all the eagle scouts BYU has I hope they know how to "be prepared".

BYU needs to bring their A game. Go Cougars!
RE: re: What is their deal? | 10:37 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Since TCU has been in the conference TCU has one Championship, UofU has 1 Championship and BYU has 2. See, I can start at an arbitrary point in time and make my stats work for me too.
TCU Christians | 10:37 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
The good Christians at TCU actually read the bible LITERALLY. Tehehehe. So TCU athletes actually believe the earth is 7000 years old, that women are actually derived from a man's RIB (that's a good one), and that Noah actually built a boat large enough to hold two of every, single animal on the planet (ahuh!), and that Moses actually "parted" the Red Sea (mmmmkay). Oh, wait -- so do BYU students and athletes! I believe in Neverland -- and go there every once in a while in a big Spaceship.

RE: SoCalTrueBlue

When asked yesterday Mendenhall said that Tonga should be ready to go. Here's what I think. Last year the Cougs had a case of "swollenheaditis" and weren't ready to play in Texas. TCU has better athletes, but I don't think they are unbeatable. CSU made the mistake of kicking to Kearsey and our punter can't make that mistake. The Cougar D needs to eliminate big plays (quick scores) ,and the offense can't turn the ball over. I think the Cougs can win in that scenario.

Re; re: 8:52AM | 10:53 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
Any objective person who watched the Utes win 4 games by a field goal or less last year would admit they got extremely lucky. A missed field goal here, a lousy call there, and the season would have been completely different.

And remember, one of those close wins was against a putrid New Mexico team that the Utes should have blown out of the stadium.

The only reasons the Utes went undefeated last year were the extraordinary leadership skills of Brian Johnson and the extraordinary kicking abilities of Louie Sakoda. Now that both are gone, it's not surprising the Utes are struggling against weak teams such as San Jose State and UNLV.

If the "football gods" smiled on BYU in 2007 then they returned the favor to the Utes in 2008. Take away a few key plays and the Utes would have had their usual 9-4 record last year. Which is likely to be their record this year.
Coug Fan | 10:55 a.m. Oct. 20, 2009
The religious comments posted on BYU articles only go to show there are not as many "UTE FANS" as there are "BYU HATRERS".
It's sad to see people use their dislike for a certain religion as their basis for choosing a college team to "cheer" for. It's even more sad if some of the BYU haters are members of the very religion they like to take shots at!
Yes, BYU is owned and operated by the LDS church. And yes, BYU does have a larger percentage of LDS athletes on their teams. But there are many outstanding and faithful LDS athletes playing for the Ute's and other college programs throughout the nation. Most of them want to quietly practice their faith, and participate in the sport they love.
Please, lets talk about football, not religion.
