Did I just read this right? They want the already underfunded schools to give up more money?

On the face of it, this may seem silly, but this is really about giving up short term, low value revenues for potential long term, high value revenues. The school district is not giving up the tax increment forever, only for 7 years.

So the real question is whether the project truly needs the tax break from the school district, and if it will be viable long enough for the investment to pay off.

I hope the Canyons school board will look at this very closely. Even though they have a lot more money than most districts in the state, they need to use every dollar wisely. Is this money they could use right now or would be a good investment down the road? Be careful of any promises or guarantees Draper City officials might throw your way. Remember the needs of my kids in all of this -- not the politics of wanting to get along with Draper officials.

What does Canyons District get out of this? This sounds just crazy.

Mui perfecto! Let's withold all taxes from the school district and give them to wealthy businessmen so that these same "risk takers" can gamble with public funds instead of having to risk their own $$. Sandy got a soccer stadium that way even though the tax $$ had to come from the state instead of the school district. Good job Draper. Way to put the intrests of schools where they belong. Behind businessmen.
