homer calls | 7:00 a.m. Oct. 18, 2009
There's no concern, this was the biggest homer game in a long time. The second worst team in the conference has only one penalty halfway through the third quarter? HOMER!
poor call | 7:02 a.m. Oct. 18, 2009
Yah, I'd really like to see that holding call on 4th and inches. It was a smash mouth dive, nothing fancy, and the refs threw that flag faster than the snap count. Baloney!

The officials missed numerous holding penalties on SDSU's O-line. I thought the officials were awful.
Nate | 8:45 a.m. Oct. 18, 2009
Stupid play calling by Anae should concern Bronco. 300 plus pound line that don't move side to side very well. 4th and 1, you go up the middle. Bronco also better learn what a nickel and dime package is. If Bronco thinks 250 pound LB's can cover WR's on 3rd and long, he is crazy. A couple of the LB's look like they should be playing offensive line, they are so slow. I would like to see BYU win this weekend, but TCU by 17.

Peaked after Tulane.

Just been treading water since then.

Nobody's improving.

Turf's awful.

Why do we always have this mid-season swoon.

Man up and play smash-mouth football!
KC | 10:26 a.m. Oct. 18, 2009
Who goes for it on 4th down, on their own side of the field, leading by 2 TDs? Punt! That coaching decision led to an SDSU TD and nearly cost the Cougars the game.

We have terrific coaches. But they occassionally forget to use common sense. Remember the UCLA bowl game a few years ago?
Officials | 12:17 p.m. Oct. 18, 2009
They stink

SDSU held on every down, both offense and defense.

The refs hate BYU.
Ego | 12:26 p.m. Oct. 18, 2009
It was arrogance that led Bronco to make that call to go for it on 4th down in their own territory only leading by two TDs. That, or he has not confidence in his defense. Either way, it was dumb.
Grumpolman | 12:37 p.m. Oct. 18, 2009
The replay clearly showed Harvey had the 4th down by a yard and the officials didn't have the (you know whats)to reverse the call. The pass interference and holding calls were blatantly one sided in SDSU's favor, but the cougs still win that's encouraging.

Eugene | 1:08 p.m. Oct. 18, 2009
I love the Cougar coaches and Mendenhall is my hero, but the 4th down failures were unexplainable. Sometimes overconfidence overpowers sensibility. Go for the field goal when you are that close and up by 2 TD's. Punt when you are on your own side of the field.

I'm not a coach by prefession and I hate to second guess the Y coaches, but I have to ask "Y" you went for either one? Coaching errors like this could lead to TCU blowing us away at home.

Go Cougs!! Learn from your mistakes and come ready to play next week!
The Truth | 1:15 p.m. Oct. 18, 2009
Complaining about the officials....Really? Alta high school just played San Diego State and beat them by 3....just kidding of course, but a win over SDSU isn't much to talk about and you can't blame the players for not being up for the game. This week BYU vs. TCU! The first actual real game in the MWC. The winner will be favored to win the MWC and play the 5th place Pac-10 team in the Vegas Bowl and that is.....THE TRUTH
Idahoan | 1:27 p.m. Oct. 18, 2009
I did question whether SDSU's line was blocking well or getting away with holding. There were two holding calls on BYU that I remember the commentators questioning, with the fourth-down penalty being one of them. How about some questionable pass interference calls? I'd be interested to know other's opinions on the officiating, from fans and media.
der | 1:38 p.m. Oct. 18, 2009
The only concern that fans should have is the numerous penalties the Cougs have game in and game out. While there are plenty of questionable calls in college football (ie two calls against Arkansas in FL's final TD drive), BYU players are responsible for too many flags.
re: BYU | 1:43 p.m. Oct. 18, 2009
Sorry, you missed the UNLV game last week. 600+ yards total offense and, except for one long pass play and one kick return, shutting down UNLV's offense, was a pretty good indicator that BYU has continued to improve.
re: KC | 1:49 p.m. Oct. 18, 2009
Agreed, why own side and going 4th and 1 - better not do that against TCU. And if you are ahead and has this 4th and inches on TCU teritory - better do field goal or punt it. TCU is better than any team played this year. And no turnover the last two games are a plus and be ready this coming Saturday! Go Cougars!
What, No Vegas Bowl Rep? | 2:03 p.m. Oct. 18, 2009
There were no reps from the Las Vegas Bowl scouting their favorite team?

I find this amazing.

But maybe the Vegas Bowl reps already suspect what's going to happen:

TCU beats BYU at home next week.

Utah beats BYU in November.

TCU and Utah get invites to better bowls. Again.

And BYU returns to the Consolation Bowl... er... I mean, Las Vegas Bowl.

Once there they'll play a fifth-place Pac-10 team that they have a 50-50 chance of losing to.

Lol!

BYU made some mistakes, but they'll play better on short down situations when Tonga is back. Also, I think a couple of those fourth down plays never should have been attempted. Why not kick a 39 yard field goal to go up 24-14 on the first drive of the second half? I also thought the fourth and inches play should have been a QB sneak.

I don't like to jump on the official bashing bandwagon, especially since BYU's pass defense is what really kept SDSU in the game, but the officials definitely blew it on BYU's second fourth down non-conversion. The holding call was a joke and the spot was a full yard short, (unless Unga was carrying the ball in his shoes). It was even more pathetic when they couldn't get it right with the benefit of replay. There were a few bad PI calls and PI no-calls here and there that hurt BYU, but it's stupid to blame the officials when BYU never should have let the game be that close. Defend the deep ball better and this is a blowout victory so don't blame the officials.
A Ref | 10:17 a.m. Oct. 19, 2009
Maybe the officials were PAC 10 officials who are well known for homering everyone that plays against a team from the west coast. Or maybe they are just the usual lousy Mtn. West officials who are so bad that they make Ute Conference non-certified officials look good.

I can name many high school officials here in Utah that would do a better job.
