Great Question | 9:07 a.m. Oct. 16, 2009
I have always wondered why UNLV is not one of the best teams in the region. I would think most college football players would love to live and play in Vegas. They have very talented athletes, good coaches, good facilities. I'm not sure what the missing link is? I would like to know what kind of team rules are in place. Maybe there is a general lack of discipline. You would have to have strict team rules in an environment like Lost Wages.

Come on UNLV!

I've wondered the same thing about the University of Hawaii. Why wouldn't you want to go to school in paradise especially if the school is picking up the tab.

Well, I don't think the Utes should have much trouble with this one. But I think Utah needs to put up some big numbers this game. The offense needs to come out scoring big and moving the ball well, and the defense needs to keep making stops and getting off the field. We need to try and dominate every part of this game and keep getting better and better. Let's hope it happens.
Go Utes!

You have obviously never seen the sporting facilities in Hawaii then if you wonder why they are not a football power. The University has some of the worst facilities in the nation! Colt Brennan would often share the story of how he had to bring his own soap to practice since the team locker room was always out. They share a practice field with a local private high school and their stadium is a big rust bowl that the NFL and the Pro Bowl have shunned. Hawaii is an amazing place to live and a great place to visit, but for top athletes that have the option to play at other schools that have better facilities and are not in the WAC, it is a no brainer.

Why do you think June Jones left Hawaii? June and Colt and lobbied for an upgrade in the facilities. They wanted to see an increased commitment to the programs facilities if June was to stay on. We all know how that played out. June is at SMU and the warriors are back to the middle of the pack team in the WAC. Hawaii can't keep local boys home because they are in the the WAC conference that demands no respect outside of Boise State. It is so much easier to get the needed exposure to make a leap to the NFL if they are on the mainland.

In addition to "Living in Paradise"
I would also add that Vegas is quite a dump as well; fun place to visit and play for a weekend but living there?? The place has nothing to offer; it has a 2 mile strip of entertainment but outside of that... Nothing!
Now San Diego State... that's the school that baffles me with their inability to succeed.

As to UNLV's problem? It is hard to pinpoint. A revolving door of coaches have come and gone, and none had much success. One thing they haven't tried is changing the team uniform. I hate it. There are high school teams in the area with better uniforms. Hey--ain't nothing else working...

How can Wyoming be just as or more competitive than those schools in warmer climates? I mean c'mon, the Wyoming AD was interviewed on the MTN last week and said how grateful he was that the roads were open for fans to be able to show up.

UNLV has the talent to be good but the coaching is not there. Its sad to see them be down for so long. Hopefully they can turn it around with a good coach.

To Anonymous 4:09 pm. The coaching at UNLV used to be at Utah. Maybe making the leap from assistant to Head Coach was a bit more the Mike Sanford has in him. Not every coach is made out to be a head coach.

Mendenhall said it that the culture needs to change. When the culture changes in a positive direction, the team will get competitive and much better.

Have you ever lived in Las Vegas? Have you ever been off the strip more than a block or two? Don't smack on a place you've only been a tourist. The city and the people are fantastic and would be better neighbors than YOU!
