The Government creates panics two fold.
1.$$
2.Keep the sheeple distracted.

What became of Y2k-Millions of dollars for companies.
What became of the Anthrax scare
What became of Sars
What became of the Avian Flu virus
What Became of the West Nile virus Panic fear and distractions

3 People have died I am truly sorry, and i am sure more will die, but this does not call for a panic.

there won't be a true panic, but there most certainly IS cause for concern. That 80 children missed school in one week from one elementary school is extreme, especially considering the total number of students attending this school. Cleveland is a very small town and this is a VERY big reason for attention. The government isn't creating panic. The media isn't creating panic. But we need to be very aware of how quickly this disease is spreading and our medical professionals need to be doing some serious research to find out why this is so communicable and so fast-acting. What our government needs to do is to make sure there is enough vaccine for everyone who wants/needs it.

Flu season hasn't really started and we have already had entire communtities laid up for a couple of days by this. There have been more than three Utah deaths. Only three so far have been confirmed for the month of September. There were plenty more during the spring and summer when the flu usually doesn't kill anyone. I just don't think you get it. This isn't an ordinary flu, and is much more dangerous.

Hey people, this stuff is real. I have seen it! It's in my home now, and is not a mild flu. It will kick your butt. You will lose 20 lbs, and really learn to appreciate your caregivers.

As someone who retired from the public health sector I am impressed on how well the government and industry have handled this outbreak.
There IS no need to panic but one must respect the virulence of this virus. This virus is spreading fast and it can be deadly. Thank heavens it does not have a really high mortality rate but that may be because of the medical technology and drugs we have today.
The vaccine is actually coming available very quickly compared to past years. Still we need more and we need it ASAP. If people will take proper precautions hopefully this virus will pass without too much harm.

I can’t help but think that the confusion re: H1N1 is being propagated deliberately. Uncertain information seems intended to create panic and crisis, which also seems like a tool used to show a need for centralized, government-run national health care.

Remember when this information surfaced last year? White House and media inflated, fabricated an global pandemic alert, claiming that H1N1may kill /3 of the world‘s population. Luckily, inquiries seeking validation of such reports resulted in an immediate subsidence and both White House and media toned it down; but they didn't correct the misinformation.

It’s no fluke or secret that the current Administration exploits crisis’s (Rahm Emanuel. “Never let a serious crisis to go to waste”). It’s both policy and practice of the current Administration to create, maintain and govern by crisis.

Now, the public is bewildered and divided, some willing and others not, to vaccinate. Most don’t know who to trust. Extant H1N1 propaganda lays waste public confidence, safety, well being, peace of mind. Government order and stability, public confidence and safety are laid to waste by this division.
cause of deaths | 8:06 a.m. Oct. 15, 2009
Are the deaths reported from the H1N1 virus solely caused by the flu? In other words, were these very healthy people who had many years to live but were struck down by this flu? Or were they very old, sick people who would probably have died soon anyway but this flu pushed them over the edge?

Based on the reports coming out, we will never know. I do know that thousands of people die each year from one strain of flu or another. Most have some other underlying medical condition that makes them especially vulnerable to the effects of the flu.

My wife got the flu last week. She was sick for about 48 hours. While the symptoms were not pleasant, they were not worse than other cold or flu events we have experienced in the past.

Yes, this is the ordinary flu...the only difference is that is isn't occurring at an ordinary flu season.

Atlanta Mother of two children that have already had swine flu

day 1 cough and feel yucky
day 2 103 fever, one of my kids vomited the other didn't
day 3 102 fever
day 4 100 - 101 fever
day five no fever
the coughing remained until day 10

I Work at an elementary school and one of my students tested positivie for H1N1 but the parent keeps sending them to school. No wonder schools are being shut down.

Parents when your child is sick please keep them home. Most children come to school sick because the parents work and don't or can't take a day off work. DON'T PANICK BUT BE RESPONSIBLE!!!!
Don't Panic | 8:38 a.m. Oct. 15, 2009
People: If you haven't learned by now the government is severly over-reacting. Live you life.
xscribe | 8:40 a.m. Oct. 15, 2009
@Please Think: Government officials have consistently said not to panic and that there is no reason to panic. Stop things up. However, 79 children have died from this so far this year, compared to the average of 88 who die from the regular flu. We've still got 2 1/2 months to go this year. I think those numbers will rise, unless kids get vaccinated. I'm also not sure if those numbers are an average for a year or for a flu season. You have your choice whether or not to get a vaccine, but where I live, we have the flu going around, and no one is panicking.

@Sleuth: All I can say is it seems you just need some way to blame Obama for this. Your whining solves nothing.

I love how these forums are just filled with distrust for the media and government all the time.... and yet somehow they now trust and agree with the government and media when it comes to theswine flu.... I am sirry people, but if the goverment is corrupt then it is corrupt across the board. You can't nottrust the government in mostthings and then blindly follow the goverment on another. Or I guess you can and enjoy theside effects!

Day 1 - cough, feel yucky
Day 2 - cough, fever, loss of appetite
Day 3 - cough, sore throat, fever 103, no appetite, aching body, 3 bloody noses, vomiting
Day 4 - terrible cough, fever 104, 2 bloody noses, aching body, doctor says there is nothing to do for it
Day 5 - terrible cough, fever 104, 2 bloody noses, tough to keep hydrated
Day 6 - doing a little better, all symptoms less
Day 7 - feeling a little better
Day 8 - Hit with all symptoms like a ton of bricks, emergency room visit, doctor there suggested Lortab to help my son sleep, fever 104, vomiting, 2 bloody noses, this is more than a little scary, especially in light of the two children who died this week after following a similar pattern
Day 9 - fever 103, resting better, eating poorly
Day 10 - fever 101, eating a little, weak and tired
Day 11 - I think we are out of the woods, still coughing, fever gone

It is worse than you think. This was a healthy and active 18 year old male who missed two weeks of school and was sicker than a dog.
Day 9 - Fever hovering at 104
ER doctor | 9:07 a.m. Oct. 15, 2009
This IS very similar to the ordinary flu. Which, for most people, means feeling lousy for several days and getting better. However, when you look at the millions of people who will contract the H1N1 flu virus this year, a small percentage of those will die, just as a small percentage die with the seasonal flu. The concern is that we're looking at thousands and thousands of deaths, and then a few months later the seasonal flu will hit, and we'll see thousands and thousands more deaths from that.

So, for the average individual, the swine flu isn't a big deal other than having flu symptoms. However, for the country as a whole, we are talking about thousands of deaths that wouldn't occur otherwise.

I'm an ER doc in SLC and have probably taken care of 100 or so people with H1N1 over the last year. Most do fine, but I've seen a 22 year old healthy woman, and a 57 year man with heart disease die from the disease. Those are lives that wouldn't be lost if it weren't for the virus.

Take it seriously!

While it may not be very fatal, it is highly contagious. Wash your hands and stay home when you are sick.

When H1N1 first hit the scene, Mexico City had all but shut down because of it. Reports from Mexico City stated that approximately 1/3 of those who had it died.

The government reacted to the information it had.

Personally, I would rather overreact and be extra cautious than underreact and suffer for not being cautious enough.

If you pay full attention to the events in the spring, you will notice a quick extra cautious response followed by a more tempered one as more facts became available. (And the government never overreacted by closing the borders (which would have been ineffective anyway) - that uproar was from others.)
Look Again | 9:50 a.m. Oct. 15, 2009
My sister, 24 had the H1N1 and was very sick. This virus is unlike other flu virus in that it reproduces in the lungs. Most flu virus reproduce in the upper respiratory track. If someone is looking for a conspiracy they may try looking at the lab reproduction of the 1918 H1N1 virus.

Dear “xscribe”:

Re your: “@Sleuth: All I can say is it seems you just need some way to blame Obama for this. Your whining solves nothing”

Try to understand that no one is looking to blame your worshipped Obama (the Nobel Peace Prize winner LOL!!). But his administration did attempt at first to exaggerate H1N1 to global proportions without warrant. Fortunately, they backpedaled. Likewise, we have a proposed “health care” overhaul that is being created to prevent U.S. damnation and destruction, yet no one seems to know or like much about it; and it too is a “crisis.” Similarly, an $800 Billion stimulus was passed that was an urgent crisis stopper, and which was going to abundantly create “private sector” jobs (they are the ones most severely unemployed), and keep unemployment below 8%.

There is a pattern of crisis after crisis, yet the promised results never come to fruition. Perhaps if you would suspend your blind faith in Obama you might understand that no one is whining or trying to blame, but simply observing and expecting some positive "CHANGE" as promised; yhank you very much.
Sounds Familiar | 10:28 a.m. Oct. 15, 2009
Go to Youtube and google "Swine Flu 1976" and watch the 60 minutes piece about the propaganda by the government to get everyone vaccinated.

Makes you wonder what the motivation is. Could it be pay back to the drug companies who have contributed millions to campaigns and have likely been hit hard by the recession? Could it be a diversion away from all the Obama administration problems? Or is it an effort to garner support for the unpopular health reforms? There is an underlying motive and it has nothing to do with your good health.

There are 400 kids out sick today with something, the district needs to do the right thing and shut it down.
JB | 11:36 a.m. Oct. 15, 2009
Please understand that the deaths that are occurring are completely different than the regular flu. Even comparing pediatric deaths is misleading. The regular flu kills babies, the very old and the already very ill. H1N1 is attacking older children who very seldom die from flu, and almost half of them are previously healthy.

Many of the deaths are from secondary bacterial infections that attack people already severely weakened by H1N1. So be very watchful of relapse.

Since this is viral, most doctors do not treat the illness but there are many natural anti-virals available for those who want to be pro-active. We were and it made all the difference to our previously very healthy teenage son.

oh, toxin waste, oh, global warming, oh war , oh, we can't be wrong....now this oh, but what if your wrong?
@Sleuth | 12:49 p.m. Oct. 15, 2009
It's obvious you don't like Obama. I get it. But don't make stuff up; i.e., please define "global proportions." This swine flu is a pandemic, which means it's "global." Also, even though this article is not about health care, you bring that up, so please look up the latest poll and see the percentages for and against health care reform, as you say "no one seems to know or like much about it." I think the numbers are close to 50/50. I wouldn't call that no one. And as far as the stimulus package goes, if you can find me one quote where Obama said he would keep unemployment below 8 percent, I'll declare you the winner of this post. Please give me a website so I can verify for myself.
to look again | 6:41 p.m. Oct. 15, 2009
The definition of flu is that it is respiratory...as in cough cough. H1N1 is exactly that....just like any other flu. The only difference is that it is occurring during non-standard time as opposed to flu season.
very ill/no sleep | 9:46 p.m. Oct. 15, 2009
Have a 13 year old who has been very ill since Aug. 27 with flu and has complications from it. This was my healthiest child. My 12 year old is immunosuppressed and got Tamiflu. Still got very ill for 3 weeks. I have never seen a flu hit so hard and knock children out so quickly. Stay isolated until the cough is gone. You are contagious! I believe the Government is DOWNPLAYING this too much. Do your research on pandemics and you will discover that they arrive in three distinct waves. 1st, not so bad...few die. 2nd worse, affects more and more die. 3rd. very severe with many many deaths. I hope this is not going to be the case with this. To all you above parents. I know how sick your children are. It is very scarry. They do not rest r/t the cough and choking sensation, therefore they can't heal. I have found it helpful to put child outside on quilt when the sun is out. Expose as much skin as possible. Avoid chill and wind. This is the only thing that has even started to help.
worried | 9:58 p.m. Oct. 15, 2009
As a parent with very ill children who were previously so healthy, just when should I begin to "panic". As I watch day after day and nothing seems to work. As the secondary infections are treated with antibiotics, yet the cough and fever continue. As my child becomes more pale and listless and I am told there is not much to be done because it is a virus. As Tamiflu was not the magic bullet and teenager is still getting worse. As I have not slept for weeks. The cough goes on and on. The children are very ill. Tylenol and/or ibuprofen are not healthy over such a long time, cough meds no longer work and can't be used for this long. So, until you experience this worry, don't tell me not to panic. Right now it is just fatigue and extreme worry.DO NOT SEND CHILDREN OUT WHILE THEY HAVE COUGH..THEY ARE CONTAGIOUS! When you watch somebody very close to you go through this...then you can tell me how to feel and when to panic. Don't downplay something this serious. Hospitals are getting full! Not political..an illness.

This illness knocked me down like something I have never seen. Got secondary infections (staph!) in my face, swollen, unbearable pain, 4 courses of antibiotics, pneumonia, high fever. 3 weeks later finally getting some strength back. Doctors initially would not see me, just too busy, then when I insisted, they saw me and told me I could have died if I would not have gone in. My nose bled and bled and bled, and my fever would not go down with any medication for the first 6 days. Then it all came back much worse, and that is when I got scared. One night I was terrified to sleep for fear I would not wake up. My face got so swollen I could not bump my teeth together, the lortab did not even work, and I just cried it hurt so bad, all the way down the side of my head to my shoulder. People who think it some dumb joke, just wait til you get it! Now I think they are trying NOT to make people panic by downplaying it. Before I thought it was a big hoax.
