Beautiful Stadium, beautiful setting.

Enjoyed the article. Hopefully the team will match the venue in the coming seasons.

A half decent article from Brad Rock. It is a beautiful stadium and a perfect place to watch soccer.

Rio Tinto will one day soon be the finest high school soccer venue in the nation.

Oh, and the saturday swap meets at the Tinto will be great too.

comments like that are unnecessary and hurtful my friend. If you do not like soccer please do not post here. The haters can stay away. I do not care to see this franchise leave or fold up despite what you may want.

You guys should grateful for having a decent pro sports franchise. If I lived there I would be at every match win or lose

fedor please do not be discouraged. A lot of people do not have our passion, but we need to hear from you again, it will take you and similar people to keep the passion and drive and head core of fan base that we can always count on.

The more the merrier so we have a healthy franchise, stable going into the next decade...

Got news for ya, Harold: soccer's not going away. Deal with it. Sorry your little world isn't always going to be just the way you long for.

Checketts, his team, and fans thusfar has been given:
$35 million in TRT for infrastructure/land.
$10 million in CDA for land/future development.
$1 a year lease on land underneath the statium for 60 years.

Indirectly he's been given:
Millions in road improvements on surface streets.
Millions in highway exit improvements (both sides of the 9000 th South exit are being groomed to indirectly assist him).

At the point in time he succeeds with this 110 acre mixed use development, you can pretty much write off any neighborhoods surrounding the stadium, because few people will be willing to put up with the multiple times a week gridlock and noise that dominate the area around stadium. The stadium and its future development will replace most all of what is currently there. I heard the Kenny Chesney drink fest and concert very loudly from my front door, and I live several blocks away from the action. I hope this stadium will ultimately serve as the poster child for why these giveaways are bad public policy. Private owners should pay for their own private developments. Subsidies to sports millionaires, betting public monies for private profits is a mistake.

I was in Denver a few weeks ago. I made a specific trip to the sticks to see Dicks Sporting Goods Park. It is not half as impressive as Rio Tinto. In fact what was more impressive is that it took me an extra 15 minutes to navigate back streets through an industrial part of town to find it. Rio Tinto is located in a convenient spot with gorgeous views from any of the seats.

Poor Harold. He feels that if he can speak negatively about something, it will in some way elevate him. Unfortunately for him people who read this article will really not care about his pessimism.

RSL, let's get the monkey off of our back tonight, eh! I wouldn't mind a 4-0 drubbing of the Red Bull. I will enter the grand staircase tonight ready to cheer on our team!

A correction (a fairly major one) to something you wrote in your post: The lease on the land under the stadium is NOT $1/year. The lease is based on current market values in the surrounding area - currently in the 100's of thousands per year.

You're confusing Rio Tinto Stadium with the Melta Center, where SLC gave Larry Miller a $1/year lease on the land. (Side note: When Rocky Anderson took office, he raised Miller's lease to $3/year and shouted to the media that he "tripled" Larry's rent to pay for one of his social programs....politics at its finest)

So why aren't you complaining about the Melta Center instead?

yes dicks is not downtown but that actually makes it easier to get to with less traffic. and rio doesnt even compare with the 30 immaculate fields dicks has for youth games and tournaments
Vince Clortho | 9:07 a.m. Oct. 14, 2009
I absolutely love the RioT, especially after attending games at RES. There is absolutely no comparison. As for Harold, just wait and see, interest in soccer in the US is growing and will continue to grow for quite some time. This is evidenced by high attendance at summer friendlies (more European teams making the trek cuz there is a market), ESPN2 broadcasting EPL games now, and to my surprise world cup qualifying results on the ticker during the FLA/LSU game...It may not be America's game but it is the world's game...

Harold you cannot beat down soccer, so since your so close to the stadium why not join the fun??. You may even enjoy the experience, it would have to be better than harbering so much hate. I even have a extra ticket for you, just respond here and we can get you into what will surely be a classic as RSL beats New York for the first time. 3-1 RSL.
RE: re wow | 9:15 a.m. Oct. 14, 2009
I'll let you park on the dirt parking lot and sit in the sun (no trees for shade) to watch your kids games in the wind tunnel near DSG. I'll stroll to the nearby park and sit under a tree to watch mine play.

Have fun of the views of industrial buildings, airplanes landing, and, oh yeah, way off in the West if you squint you can see the Rockies.

we have heard from people that have compared RioT to DSP. That is pretty interesting stuff. Are there posters out there that have been to other MLS soccer venues that could tell us how they compare? I had always thought that the HDC would probably be the crown jewel, is RioT a better experience?
Growing up. | 10:32 a.m. Oct. 14, 2009
I used to be little.

Now I am bigger.

I have alot of money.

I like to spend it on Soccer.

There are many others like me.

I went to the RSL vs Chivas game in LA for the playoffs last year and thought it was pretty nice, but I like the RioT experience more. HDC was massive compared to RioT and the HDC had all sorts of parking surrounding the stadium, but you could feel the difference in quality of the two stadiums. Benches without seat-backs, the masonry.. a lot of things contribute to it. One thing the HDC did have that was sweet was the blue lights on the roof that you could see from miles around, but over-all the staduim didn't feel like a luxury stadium like RioT does.
todd from santa ana | 11:14 a.m. Oct. 14, 2009
Home Depot, I have been there REAL fans.

The grounds are impressive with the fields, high school football playoffs played there along with UFL coming in next month with Dennis Green and his California Redwoods and I WILL BE THERE IT IS FOOTBALL AND CHEAP ALSO!!!!!! Anyway the stadium itself is blah and my opinion OVERRATED!

Artistically, DICKS and RIO TINTO KILL THAT PLACE
skinnyj | 11:16 a.m. Oct. 14, 2009
I have been to the HDC, it's pretty sweet. It's much bigger, and they have a cool restaurant/bar area over one of the goals. I don't know about it's ability to host a concert like Riot, however. Chivas also had some attractive scenery in the form of cheerleaders.
Re: Harold | 11:37 a.m. Oct. 14, 2009
If you are able to predict the future, would you please tell me the winning number for the Idaho Lottery for next week?
Soccer is here to stay! like it or not!
Harold? | 1:32 p.m. Oct. 14, 2009
Isn't Harold the "dummy" operated by ventriloquist Jeff Dunham? Sure has the same tone. Life is good, soccer is here to stay despite the haters. Hey Harold, maybe you would feel better if Mr. Dunham removed his hand from your rear end....

I guess for some reason I can't bring up the fact that Campos needs to come off the bench at least once in our last 3 games. Heaven forbid the reporters actually comment on it. If Campos starts all the rest of our games San Jose gets two 2nd round draft picks from us. If he comes off the bench just once in the last three it is only 1. What is the smart move???
I love the RioT. In my humble opinion it is the best in the whole MLS. It is top notch all the way through. DSP hold more people but RSL is better in everything else. Closer to the fans, better view, better materials, etc. Oh and RSL usually draws a minimum of 10k to EVERY game. It seems like the last time we played Colorado they only had like 7 or 8 thousand. That's for a rivalry game. The only stadium that I have seen in person that is better in everything than RioT is San Mamés Stadium in Spain for Athletic Bilbao. I like RioT more than Real Sociedad, Real Oviedo, Racing Santader or Deportiva de la Coruna.
Hey Harold | 4:38 p.m. Oct. 14, 2009
Don't worry about the Soccer lovers. They have kids that can't play any other sports, so they have latched onto the recreation known as Soccer.

Gotta love all the 'Draws'

Another season right around 16K attendance. Not bad. I thought it would drop down to the low 15s. Maverick must have really pushed the free season tickets with every fill-up promo.
J Crunch | 4:50 p.m. Oct. 14, 2009
I think next year, the new Red Bull stadium will be unofficially the new "crown jewel of American Soccer". That is a very nice-looking facility. But Rio Tinto is right there. I love going to the games there and I'm hoping for a nice crowd at the game tonight. I'm gonna say 2-1 RSL.
To "Hey Harold" | 6:00 p.m. Oct. 14, 2009
You're ripping on children? Seriously? You know so little about the game that you can't attack it directly and must resort to personal insults? Wow. That is truly sad.

As for "Harold" himself, he needs a reality check. Soccer in this country is growing - rapidly. You may not like it, but you'll certainly be hearing more about it.

Rio Tinto - great place to watch a game. Well ... with one exception: the most expensive nachos I've ever encountered. And if you ask for a few more, your server will be sure to point out that your order has been weighed and meets exact specifications.
Aker | 11:31 p.m. Oct. 14, 2009
Harold and Hey Harold - There is NOTHING you can say that will make the fact that soccer is the most played sport in the world false. The players -at all levels - are more athletic than American football or baseball players. My kid could outrun your kid I'd bet!

Advertisers estimates of television viewers for the Germany-Russia game last Saturday topped one billion. That is more than the most watched Superbowl in history. Those figures are easily available online. It took me less than 30 seconds to find them. The Germany-Russia game was just a World Cup qualifier. Wait until next summer when nearly 50% of the planet will be watching the final game. American Football isn't even an Olympic sport!

As for Rio Tinto vs. Dick's Sporting Goods Park, I think they are both nice. I live in Denver and attend Dick's often but visited Rio Tinto for the MLS All-Star game this past summer. I like the convenient location of Rio Tinto but Dick's is easier to get in and out of.
RSL luver | 11:09 a.m. Oct. 15, 2009
Hey Harold, what is this Maverick-cheap-tickets you speak of? I've never seen any cheap tickets from there?
Tickets | 2:26 p.m. Oct. 15, 2009
They give them out for free. No one really pays for tickets. Get real, like someone is actually going to pay to go watch Soccer. Where can I get my tickets to the paint drying tournament.
Jemmy | 9:12 p.m. Oct. 15, 2009
Let's compare the door prices of any World Cup qualifier match with the door prices of your Superbowl.

You sir are a mindless troll who must be jealous of REAL football's popularity. The US may be a bit behind the rest of the world but demographic shifts in your country make it inevitable that the sport you scorn will be the most popular thing going in twenty years. There really isn't anything the pickup drivin' yahoo crowd can do about it either.

I coach a youth soccer team of 14 year olds, and any of my players would be stars of any sport they wished to play, be it football, basketball, baseball or hockey. However, I wonder how many kids that play some of these sports I mentioned could come to my team and be able to make my soccer team, probably not one of them.
