Just as he did a few years ago in a column about Iraq, Benson unveils his "Raise the White Flag" in Afghanistan strategy.

Earth to Benson: Even Barack Obama now admits we won in Iraq, despite having the same challenges there that we now face in Afghanistan, challenges that caused you to wring your hands in despair in 2006.

It's okay to admit it now: The US CAN win wars if we want to. Viet Nam is irrelevant.

The real question is, do we want to win wars?

We get the lawyers out of the military planning process, also the diplomats, and use our military for what they are best at. Killing people and breaking things. Take the handcuffs off of our troops and allow them to shoot back any time they are shot at, instead of having to verify if there are "innocent" civilians in the way. Your last sentance gave me some hope that you aren't turning into a flaming liberal.

I agree the situation in Afghanistan is a mess, but if we leave now we would be effectively ceding a terrorist training and command center that would most assuredly be used for another attack on the US.

9/11 happened because we allowed Al Quaida a haven in Afghanistan from which they planned and executed the attack without outside interference. For moral reasons and to provide for our common defense, it would be a grave mistake to repeat this error.
