Strong game | 12:29 a.m. Oct. 11, 2009
Nice work cougs. 0 interceptions for Max Hall, 3 interceptions for the cougar defense. Also, 0 turnovers for the cougs.

Now make this the norm, and we should see a strong finish for the second half of the season!
good one, Dick | 12:53 a.m. Oct. 11, 2009
I liked the article, Harmon...right from the start. I think you are the columnist who established the "Big Three" thing with BYU, TCU and Utah. You should keep that going. That line where you talked about UNLV walking into one of the Big Three's Killzone was great....so true. So true.
Anonymous | 1:14 a.m. Oct. 11, 2009
As long as Max does not throw the ball that is a good thing. I am ready for Jensen to step in, don't even get me started.

Go Cougs! but if you can't tell when BYU is going to run the ball or pass the ball then you don't know what you're talking about and should learn a little bit more about football... That being said...UNLV's defense is just bad.
Good work | 1:49 a.m. Oct. 11, 2009
Good win in your home away from home, unfortunately it will never get bigger than the Las Vegas bowl for the Zoobs. At least you can pull off big wins in Vegas, well, except the beating you took from a weak PAC 10 last year
Yawn... | 3:31 a.m. Oct. 11, 2009
Probably the most boring game I have ever been to. UNLV's defense has got to be one of the worst in the nation. Gave up 700+ yds last week and 600+ yds this week. We scored at will on them. At least everyone got free chicken at Caines for UNLV running a kickoff back.
Anonymous | 5:26 a.m. Oct. 11, 2009
Good enough article I suppose - I read right up until you wrote about Bagdad parking valets. I'd prefer you wait a decade or two after we're out of that war before you start with the humor about it. Too many of our friends and family are in harms way.

"Up next for the Cougars is a trip to San Diego where they'll face the Aztecs, another defensive juggernaut. Not."

You must have been inspired by Borat last night to be writing "Not" jokes. Awesome, simply awesome!

Serengeti with a limp? Simpsonesque? Baghdad parking valets?

This is the worst writing I've ever read! Youi'd think someone who's been writing for as long as Harmon wouldn't have to use absurd references in an article on a football game.

That's tasteless. Funny, but tasteless.

Luckily, most of your readers aren't smart enough to catch the joke.

Cajuncoug | 7:43 a.m. Oct. 11, 2009
A BYU player had two pics in a game as recently as 2006--if you count bowl games. Justin Robinson pulled it off in the same stadium vs. Oregon in the Vegas Bowl.
re: Good Work | 8:14 a.m. Oct. 11, 2009
Hey, how'd your Utes look yesterday? Someone told me they eeked out a win vs. CSU. I told them, there's no way, CSU is absolutely awful, the Utes can't be that bad, can they?
So, you tell me....
Yeah, we'll probably go Vegas bowl this year. What bowl is there for 3rd place in MWC? The "toilet bowl" in Wyoming or something? Hopefully yours will be on tv....

The Rebels have a horrible team.
Henry Drummond | 8:28 a.m. Oct. 11, 2009
This has to be seen as a moral victory for UNLV. Last week they gave up 63 points to Nevada, but they held much touted 18th ranked BYU to just 59 points. I see BYU dropping in the polls because of this.
UteFan | 8:44 a.m. Oct. 11, 2009
weak win for a weak byu team. Come on, UNLV? My grandma could have run for 150 yrds against them. I would be worried about San Diego st if i were a coug. It was not an impressive win. However, The Mighty Utes had a very impressive win over a much tougher Colorado st. team. Utah dominated Colorado st. and showed that we are the best in the MWC. I predict a New Mexico bowl birth for the cougs.

re: good work | 8:51 a.m. Oct. 11, 2009
Cute. Way to come in here with a jab after your team nearly lost.

Max... Thanks for throwing to the blue and white jerseys. It probably is nice when the colors are not too close... Like Florida State with their blue....er...red...
Bottom Line | 8:53 a.m. Oct. 11, 2009
BYU has a better running attack than passing attack. The stable of running backs is deep with speed, power, and finesse. The backups Kariya and DiLuigi are extremely serviceable.

I'm a fan of your artlces Dick, but the Baghdad valet reference was unnecessary and in bad taste. Perhaps you don't know anyone who is or has been in Iraq or Afghanistan. I do, and that kind of 'joke' disrespects what everyone (including the people of Iraq) has been through.

To re: Good Work | 10:59 a.m. Oct. 11, 2009
You are right, CSU is not all that good, but better than they were last year when the Cougs eeked out a win barely in Ft. C. The problem with you and yours is that chickens are always counted before they hatch. Anyone remember the "quest" last year? Already you're talking the Vegas bowl before TCU and Utah. You guys never change...one pipe dream after another. Show some class...act like you've been there before. The UTES have, unless, of course, the Sugar is the toilet bowl you refer to.
Henry, Henry, Henry | 11:10 a.m. Oct. 11, 2009
Polls don't matter for BYU any more. Boise will be this year's token non-BCS team invited to the big dance, with the possible exception if TCU remains undefeated and somehow leap-frogs them.

But that would mean the frogs beat the cougs, and... the polls don't matter.

Personally, I think the cougs will beat TCU at home. And Utah will lose to both teams on the road. And the polls don't matter. BYU goes to Vegas. Again. And will be grateful for it.

And Utah will probably play a bowl game. In Boise. And chirp about how it's better than playing in Vegas again.
Henry Drummond's smarter self | 11:10 a.m. Oct. 11, 2009
Henry, did you notice that Hall, Unga and most of the other starters were off the field in the 4th quarter. Do you have any doubt that the Cougars could have run up the score even more had they wanted to? UNLV didn't hold BYU to anything. BYU held back. Now, get a clue oh clueless one.
YtxPat | 12:12 p.m. Oct. 11, 2009
Great article. I liked the references to the valet. That is exactly how that back field felt. No turn overs. What a way to go. Just need to sure up the special teams. Too bad Chambers could not go two more yards. Living in the old SWC I see some very good teams, but BYU would do very well day in and day out with these teams. Texas did not look dominating yesturday, nor did A&M, Houston or Baylor. Bronco is doing all we can ask. The weakness in the MWC is the commissioner who schedules the LV Bowl, not the teams.
Hey UteFan | 12:33 p.m. Oct. 11, 2009
As usual your exaggerations are hilarious. Your "mighty Utes" dominated CSU? How is that possible when you were behind them until the fourth? BYU only played their starters 3 quarters against CSU and got an easy win. Hall and company only played 3 quarters against UNLV. From what I can see in the stats, Nevada played their first string the whole game against UNLV and ran up the score.
Amazingly you seem to have made it back into the top 25, but that will change again soon.
But you keep up the positive thinking...
Uncle George | 1:04 p.m. Oct. 11, 2009

Utefan, when you look at the world with red tinted glasses it is hard to see reality.

You can CROW when you have won a National Championship. Until then eat humble pie and keep trying. Last years Fiesta Bowl win does not equal a National Championship ring!

As a cougar fan I pulled for a Ute victory for our conference.

Perhaps you should try yellow tinted glasses ...
chloejudkins | 2:30 p.m. Oct. 11, 2009
Um... Is this writer really a professional journalist that the DesNews actually pays? Wow. I thought the Trib's writers were awful. Now, I know that newspaper journalism in Utah really, really sucks.

This guy referenced OJ Simpson and Baghdad valets... Completely tasteless.

Also, Harvey Unga, the "Tongan?" Pretty sure Harvey is an American citizen. He's from Provo, isn't he? How about Max Hall, the Norwegian? Or Oneil Chambers, the Nigerian? (For the record, I have no idea of the accurate geographical lineage of Hall or Chambers, but it would be nice if Dick Harmon started referring to them by their ancestral heritage, just like he does with Unga, the Tongan, so we'd know from where their families originate.)
Ute fans are HILLarious | 3:28 p.m. Oct. 11, 2009
Ragging on Unga's 150 yard, 3 TD performance in only 3 quarters of play. Ragging on BYU ONLY scoring 59 points on the Rebels. Ragging on how bad UNLV is (well, in that case, they're probably correct), but it'll be interesting to see if the mighty Utes can top BYU's 600+ yard, 59-point production vs the Rebels.

Since Utah hasn't scored more than 35 points in any of their 5 games this year, it will be fun to read all of the excuses next week why their fans' bravado didn't match their team's performance in Las Vegas. Maybe it'll snow in Vegas this week.
Anonymous | 3:45 p.m. Oct. 11, 2009
Ute fans need to pray that they score more than 59 next saturday, and give up less than 21.

Or it's going to be nasty around here.
Cougarf@n | 4:16 p.m. Oct. 11, 2009
The Utah fans on this board are an embarrassment to the state. They were talking smack when BYU beat down CSU because apparently BYU's statistics weren't pretty enough. Then Utah needs three consecutive interceptions to barely squeak out a win against CSU and it's like they accomplished something great. BYU absolutely stomped UNLV and the third stringers were in for the fourth quarter. I'm excited to hear about how . There won't be any home vs. away excuses for you then.
Hey Harmon | 4:35 p.m. Oct. 11, 2009
"They were jittery as Baghdad parking valets." Hillarious.

After yesterday, there is just one big team and two medium sized teams. The utes are wiping their brow that CSU did the "Idaho" choke. And TCU escaped a frosty air attack. The gap is getting wider...
No worry | 5:57 p.m. Oct. 11, 2009
the UNLV defense will shine next week. Who do they play anyway!?
Re: 10:13 a.m. | 6:09 p.m. Oct. 11, 2009
What's funny is UNLV will probably shut down your high school rushing offense so I would probably keep your mouth shut.
AK Cougar | 2:09 a.m. Oct. 12, 2009
Great article Dick. You can write another one about bowling over the opponent after next weeks slaughter at SDSU.

Once again the trolls are getting their daily entertainment by reading and commenting about BYU. Likely these trolls have not even read any articles about the U.

Go Cougars over SDSU 63 - 3.
It just doesn't matter | 10:04 a.m. Oct. 12, 2009
Utah fans have this convenient double-standard where they will only use comparitive scores and stats when they favor Utah.

Otherwise, a win is a win, a loss is a loss, and it doesn't matter by how much you win or lose.

GUARANTEED!

If Utah has better stats against the Rebels this Saturday, the Utah fans will be here in droves to brag about how this proves that Utah is so much better.

If Utah squeaks out a 35-31 win over the Rebels, the Utah fans will be saying it doesn't prove anything since Utah still got the win.

Then they'll repeat ad-nauseum all the close wins that Utah had last season and how Utah was still a great team. And then talk about all the close wins that BYU had in 1984 and how that proves that BYU didn't deserve the National Championship.

Harline is still open and 4th and 18 are meaningless close wins, because BYU won. BYU/Utah 2008 is a statement win, because Utah won.

Looking forward to the Ute spin machine to crank up!
Y FAN | 10:54 a.m. Oct. 12, 2009

And no,UTEFAN you guys were lucky to pull that one off, your grandma probably could run 3 miles in 14:00
you should be proud...
Shhh, Don't Tell Anyone | 1:17 p.m. Oct. 12, 2009
Don't tell anyone in Provo that if BYU had kept giving the ball to Unga in the Utah game last year, BYU wins.

Don't tell anyone in Provo that their team's true strength lies in their runningbacks. If Bronco ever figures out that his best offensive weapon is Harvey Unga (and those who spell him off) he might stop letting Max Hall throw the ball 40 - 50 times per game. After all "this is BYU and we throw the ball around here, even if our quarterback is only an OK mid-major quarterback who throws as many interceptions as touchdowns."
stone cold sober | 1:34 p.m. Oct. 12, 2009
Doesn't Bauman run a 4.3 forty? I can't figure out how he got beat deep. Maybe our middle linebacker shouldn't cover a wideout. (even with Bauman's blazing wheels)
re: Shhh | 1:52 p.m. Oct. 12, 2009
You either didn't watch the UNLV game or you were asleep because BYU had the perfect mix of run/pass in that game. Unga and Max both had huge games. Only a clueless armchair QB wouldn't see that BYU has already figured out their strengths and that Max is one of the top collegiate QBs this season.

Next time, try writing something intelligent.
figures | 2:17 p.m. Oct. 12, 2009
BYU throttles CSU early, puts in reserves and lets CSU look respectable last week and BYU goes down in the polls.

Utah is getting waxed by CSU 17-3 before CSU literally throws the ball game away with 3 straight interceptions and Utah gets ranked (goes up in the voting).

Those BCS loving voters still have malice towards BYU for what we did to their cereal (P'd) in 1984, 1996, and 2000. First causing the Bowl Alliance/BCS, then forcing them to expand their openings to others as they looked pathetic for not letting BYU in. Congrats Utah, BSU, Hawaii. Cougar nation says you are welcome. We're glad to give you the BCS as something that you can hang your hat on as an accomplishment, we still prefer consensus national championships that are in the official record books.
Shhh has it right | 2:35 p.m. Oct. 12, 2009
BYU is committed to the run against a patsy like UNLV. Let's see if they have the same committment to the run against TCU and Utah. History would say they won't. Take last year's game against Utah. Unga must have been averaging 7-8 yards/carry in the first half. They didn't even give him the ball in the second half! If they had stayed committed to the run that game likely would have turned out differently.

The way to win the FSU game, or at least be in it, would have been to hog the clock with the run and keep their offense off the field.

Hall is not a top collegiate QB. Throwing as many interceptions as touchdowns gets you kicked out of the "top collegiate QB" club in a hurry. He is a solid mid-major quarterback that has shown he can't throw the team on his shoulders and win. If pressure is taken off of him by committing to the run he will not lose games for you. Don't commit to the run and you will need all of your fingers and toes to tally up his interceptions.

It was the most bizarre thing to watch both Rebel and Cougar fans cheer Deante Purvis ran that kick off for a touchdown. I didn’t want to see UNLV score, but the idea of a free chicken finger meal from Cane’s was so worth cheering for. GO COUGARS
