Don't forget to add in the sizeable portion of "active" mormons who would gladly attend an NFL game on Sunday. I guarantee it would be more interesting that listening to the "teacher" in the EQ saying "uh...I got this lesson about 20 minutes ago, so we'll be reading a lot of the manual..."

I Know, I Know

I know the NFL is the gold standard of professional sports. It inspires great loyalty, it's fast, it brings in billions, and it's very telegenic.

But I for one could care less about the NFL.

The NFL game is so straightforward, it's boring, it's expensive and it seems like it's only the fans who are loyal.

Bring the NFL here if you want, Dave Checketts. But I'm not paying for your stadium with government funds and I'm not going to come to the games.

The Real Stumbling Block

My opinion is that there isn't enough sponsor money in Utah for an NFL franchise.

I don't see that changing anytime in the next decade either.

The Jazz are one of the most supported, and healthy NBA teams in the country. There are great fans in Utah. Salt Lake should try to follow Denver and get MLB and NFL teams. I honestly don't think fan support would be a problem. If Real Salt Lake can make it, an NFL team would easily have support.

@I know

I can't stand the NFL either. Any block or tackle below the waist is illegal - the rules have changed such that players don't even wear pads in their pants. Why not just wear shorts or sweats.

The rules have changed to lengthen careers of players who are only good for 3-4 years anyway before they are superceded by the next automatron, or head off to a bigger contract, team/fan loyalty be darned.

Then there is the constant marketing, with team insignia bubba-hats mandated on the sidelines and in (indoor) press conferences, and players themselves with handlers, p.r. agents, developing their individual schticks, while too many live outrageous off-field lives and expend more energy pointing at themselves or dancing for the cameras after making a play.

An over-hyped, over-priced business, dominated by prima donna behaviors, and with just a plain dull product. I can't forsee ever attending a game, Friday, Saturday, or Monday.

Utah Needs NFL

We need to be a World Class City, and having NFL and soccer is necessary. And I don't want to hear people complaining about taxes being used to build the new NFL stadium. I'd gladly pay an extra $100 per year. What's even better, my neighbors who don't like football will have to pay that extra $100 per year as well so this is a great deal.

Professional sports are just as important as education, transportation, welfare and public safety. It defines who we are and unites as a community. Without the NFL, Utah would just be another Winnemucca.

Citing callers to a radio sports talk show?

My guess is that Los Angeles will get another shot at the NFL long before Salt Lake does. It has more than 2 million people.

It would be fantastic to have an NFL franchise here. If they can make it work, all the better. However, I don't see it ever happening because of the Sunday issue. Too many people would not support it for that reason alone. Also between the Jazz playing (where there would be some overlap in the season), and the college football games on Saturday, the metro area is not big enough to add on the NFL successfully. Our TV market is small compared to other franchises and it would be difficult finding funds to support the stadium being built and all the other expenses that comes with a NFL franchise. Don't forget the stigma that would exist for so many people if they were to attend Sunday games, it would be difficult to be discrete about that. There's not that much money in this town and people here are frugal by culture/nature and as such, there would be too much reluctance to fork out the money to make the team profitable. The Olympics as a one-time international event and a pro-football franchise are two very different things, no credible correlation can be drawn from that.

boondoggle

Hey everybody, let's spend millions of our tax dollars to build some NFL franchise owner a new stadium. Hopefully it will be Dave Checketts because, hey, you know this guy. Maybe we can get some stimulus money!

Let's be sure to put it far away from any existing development as possible so we can encourage some more sprawl that will require additional tax money to install the streets and utilities and create additional traffic congestion. I'm thinking Elberta.

The people who would benefit the most from this would be the franchise owner, the players and the sports writers. A pretty small number of people to benefit from such a large investment from all of us.

Then in ten years we will have to build them a new stadium as we will be blackmailed by the team as they threaten to leave.

It will be awesome!

Broadcasts

The Mtn could handle the TV broadcasts.

country boy

hey i know i know you sound like you are really boring go get a life .

i would love to see the NFL here. but i doubt if happens in the next 10-20 years. the best we could hope for is a few pre-season or training camps

No way Utah can support an NFL franchise. It hardly supports all the "world-class" organizations it already has.

mormon

I am an active mormon who would gladly go to 1 or 2 games a year even if it is on Sunday

I'm An Active Sports Fan

If Rush & Checketts buy this team and move it to SLC you wouldn't see me in the stands if the tickets were free.

Hopeful

I hope Dave can make it happen...I'm LDS too and I would love it if we had a NFL team here in UTAH. Heck I would switch NFL teams in a heartbeat.

Til that day comes GO TITANS

No Way No How

It will never happen. After the fit the sheeple threw over RSL's stadium getting built you think Utah will ever want to build an NFL stadium that will cost maybe 7 times more?

Don't think Checketts would build it himself.

MN Viking

Buffalo is a better bet - It's the smallest TV market - 2/3 the size of Salt Lake City.

No Way????

Soccer is not in the same league as Football......and anyone who makes the association is up in the night!

Bring the NFL to Utah....I would gladly give up my High Priest chair for 50 Yd line seats...

If the NFL comes to Utah....will BYU still fill LES? No way unless Bronco starts getting smart and playing Talent over favorites.......

And RICE BOWL would be a ghost town again!!

MN Viking

Just change the franchise name from the Bills....
