Congratulations to the refs for another stellar performance at the Alta VS Brighton game. It was great for the Deseret News to point out the controversial calls that were made. By the way, has the ref ever heard of advantage? Are linesmen taught the rules of offsides? When a player stops and looks at the ref because she knows she is offsides, and he doesn't call it, well I think its time for the linesman to go back to the rule book and understand what offsides means.

cool game, good crowd, cool logo in the middle of the field from on top of the football stands.
Of course... | 10:14 a.m. Oct. 9, 2009
That should be Alta Soccer Fan...and calls went wrong both ways.
What you SHOULD be carping about is the blown call on the hand ball in the box by Brighton in OT2.
But..as Ms. Ohai stated, some great efforts averted a score of 6-3 for Brighton...in regulation.
This is fun...hope they get to play one more time.

I think this one a classic. I am very impressed with Alta's soph. Selman. She's amzingly poised and athletic.

re: soccer fan | 11:23 a.m. Oct. 9, 2009
You are correct, most linesmen do not know the offsides rule. Here is the part they don't understand.

"It's also important to note that offside applies at the moment the ball is passed, not at the moment the ball is received. Therefore, if the offensive player that will receive the pass is "onside" at the time the ball is passed, but then runs behind the unsuspecting defender before receiving the pass, the receiving offensive player is not offsides."

They throw up the flag any time a player is behind the defense even if the pass has been made. This is taking a lot of the exitement and goal scorring chances out of the game. It's a shame.

No need for any negative comments here, if all soccer games was this intense they would be playing of Fiday nights..Thanks to both Alta and Brighton for one of the most intertaining games I've seen in years.
re: Bengal fan | 1:08 p.m. Oct. 9, 2009
If she was a good as you think, she should be able to impact the game from any position. Why doesn't she ?

but - holy dropped ball Batman! What happened to Alta's all-universe keeper? Did a bengal grease those gloves?

This game was great fun to watch. It only show how much soccer talent there is in Utah soccer. I was very impressed with a number of players from both teams and cannot wait to see them play again.

Brighton did a great job of containing Ohai. Kelsey Godfrey MVP for Alta

ohai...ohai...ohai. True. But was there any doubt about who was the most influential player in that match?

Good question! I wondered that same thing!

Alta/Brighton girls soccer .. what not to like ? Kelsey Godfrey .. amazing, tough, made huge plays. Stephanie Verdoia .. awesome, talented, determined. Ohai's sick goal. Tough play including 4 yellow cards. Coaches screaming and fans whining. Fun stuff ... bring on the playoffs!

I have watched the keeper for alta the last three years. And yes she had a off day and you still could not beat alta.

All of you need to get a ref uniform and some training and get yelled at for a while.
Re Cheese | 4:50 p.m. Oct. 9, 2009
Cmon Selman, let her earn something, she doesnt need your help. If she was as good as you think she is, she would make an impact in a high school game. She doesn't, EVER.
region 1 is tough | 7:20 a.m. Oct. 10, 2009
Alta is so much better than brighton, and I predict they won't meet again in state. Brighton will go down in semis and Alta will have to play against a real TEAM. Alta has so much talent it is not even funny, but I hope if we face them in the finals, we will get lucky and play the game of our life. Brighton has some very good players, but if they are forced to play soccer and not 'Ultimate fighting', they won't win.
ripping bad refs | 12:14 p.m. Oct. 10, 2009
the ref of this alta brighton game is terrible. he lets anything and everything go-If you get him as your ref go for it-dirty hard tackles-because he won't call anything. I really don't think he knows what is a foul and what is not. Whichever team plays the dirtiest will win the game he is reffing. So if you are a slow, untalented team, playing against a better more skilled team-go for it because you will probably win.
TO: Region 1 is tought | 12:53 p.m. Oct. 10, 2009
Alta is not better than Brighton. Here is why: Alta has Ohai. Everyone opponent puts three to four players on her. That opens up a lot if Alta players. Problem is the Alta players haven't figured that out. Alta's keeper is inconsistant. A good team can beat them on a given day

Long is hands down the best keeper in the entire state without a doubt no one is more aggressive or has a stronger leg get a clue!

You want to fuss about ref'ing, then go to a football game. Of all the ref'ing I've seen this year in High School Soccer, the last Alta/Brighton game had the best crew. They missed some stuff on both sides, but it was for the most part equal. Fuss if you want, but you need to spend 25+ years ref'ing and learn the rules. They are NOT black and white. Almost ever one of them starts with "IN THE OPENION OF THE REFEREE". No ref is going to decide a game on a PK from a foul at the edge of the box (inside or out). They are going to let the players decide the out come as much as possable. If your so good and so soccer wise, take a class and get on the field in one of the 3 player team uniforms!!! The older the players and higher level of play they play, the more they are going to let go.. They are not going to ref this game like a U10 X-League game.
Skyline fan | 3:51 p.m. Oct. 11, 2009
Cassell is in the U17 women's national team pool and is being recruited by the top soccer schools around the country. Long is good, but Cassell is great. Skyline has lots of talent at other positions too and could make some noise in the playoffs. GO EAGLES!

Don't criticize the Alta coach on here...it will be sensored!!!
sensored ? | 10:08 p.m. Oct. 11, 2009
What does that mean ?

T.C. please don't slam on your own team
JO JO | 1:42 p.m. Oct. 12, 2009
Is this a semantics' page? Sensored or Censored..you get it Mitchell Booster!!

The D-News loves this guy and never posts critical points of view.

Anyone could win with that talent pool.

Dude cannot and will not make adjustments.

The coaching not the players make Alta beatable.

After this year just another average team.

Congratulations to all the coaches that want to make their players strive for success and improve their play.

It certainly is not happening at Alta!!

Not my style .. you'll have to look somewhere else for those comments.
Re: JO JO | 2:15 p.m. Oct. 12, 2009
Don't have a stroke. Maybe all it takes is to make your comments readable and they'll get posted.

'After this year just another average team.' Are you referring to Alta ? If so, then 'another average team' for them will be another state champion. Good one!

I think it's hard to criticize Coach Mitchell since he has 7 state titles in the past 10 yrs. Lots of other teams have had talent too. Davis, Brighton, Lone Peak, and Bingham (to name a few) have had excellent talent over the past few years.
re: cheese  | 3:02 p.m. Oct. 12, 2009
If not T.C then its E.C. or S.C. everyone affiliated with Alta soccer knows it and is sick of hearing your petty jealous comments. Keep up the good work girls. Keep working as a TEAM and you will go far. Don't let a few sour apples spoil the whole bunch!

You might want to be more careful singling people out specifically on an anonymous message board despite who you THINK might be behind other comments. Post your name if you have the courage to stand behind your comments or email them directly.
to re: re: cheese | 4:18 p.m. Oct. 12, 2009
Please don't bash people for posting anonymously when you yourself are posting anonymously. Also, did someone strike a nerve with you? I didn't see you having a problem when in earlier posts people (player and parent) were singled out BY NAME but when someone writes initials only you get upset? Very interesting and very telling. Go Alta soccer, don't get hung up in certain people's agendas. You have the talent to go all the way, now lets go do it!!
to re: re: cheese | 4:18 p.m | 4:31 p.m. Oct. 12, 2009
Yes it did strike a nerve because I was getting accused of comments that I didn't make. Initials only ? Good one ... that takes about 30 seconds to know who is getting written about. You might as well write their whole name (and post yours while you're at it).
