LaVell's grandson Matt is and unselfish football player. Like my son and other's like him at Canyon View, they play for the love of the game. They would fit well into Larry Gelwix's rugby program at Highland High. Where their team motto is kia kaha, Maori for "Forever Strong". If you can get your hands on it get the Fall issue of BYU Magazine 2009 and read about Larry and his rugby program. One the most uplifting stories and him and the movie made about his teams he has coached for over 30 years.

Good story. I love hearing about the walk-ons who contribute to making BYU a great football team. We need more stories like this rather than bagging on Max Hall's interceptions and focusing on players that have been dismissed for breaking team rules, etc.

Love this story....Edwards is a stud...but I am still wondering how many pick 6 interceptions did Hall throw in practice yesterday?....Anyone know?

Wow, that is tough.

"We had a little special sticker we gave him to him," said Mendenhall.

Sorry, but that is too funny. This young man breaks his arm and he is rewarded with a little special sticker. Is Bronco patterning his team after an LDS ward nursery?

this is an awesome story. it's good to hear we got kids like that backing our team up, just waiting to get a shot at suiting up on saturday. i really hope he gets a chance.

jim don't get to bad a rose colored glasses with larry gelwix. i played rugby in high school in salt lake. he's a much bigger hiderance than help for utah high school rugby. the video made him out to be the second coming of "rugby jesus", not true. i wouldn't send anyone of my family or anyone i knew to play rugby with him.

Thanks again Dick for a great job. Your willingness to dig deeper and acumen at spotting the real stories that make sports great are appreciated very much by this reader--and always have been. Keep it up.

Perhaps he should have followed in his Granddad's footsteps and played at USU.

Such a cute story. Warm and fuzzies all over.

If that is what makes you a rock star on byu's team, is it really any wonder they can't sniff a bcs game?

7734865 Get a life ute fan. You must be a little bitter about losing your star player. You have had 2 good years, we have a legacy... oh and wait a minute a national championship.

Heroism and stupidity are close cousins. This has the appearance more of the latter than the former.
Rick | 2:27 p.m. Oct. 8, 2009
I guess I'm going to have to agree with Anonymous here. Its not too far from the days of watching gladiators kill or be killed. We cheer the person who will willingly sacrifice their health and body to tackle somebody with a ball (during practice no less). The number of screws and steel plates, number of MRI's and operations, become a badge of honor. And when their body finally no longer functions, they are quickly forgotten as we watch the next batch of youth line up and do the same thing.

There you go with all your hate. How do you stand yourself inthe morning all full of hate and nastiness?

Mr. Rick, did someone forget to give you a special sticker when you played four-square?

Giving something your everything is inspiring. Save it for the Uties Matt, save it for the Uties.
Re: Anonymous | 1:29 p.m.  | 9:01 p.m. Oct. 8, 2009
I agree with you. So, this kid steps up to the line for the next play. His arm is flapping around and he doesn't notice it? His teammates don't notice it? His coach doesn't know about it until the next day? And 95% of the people on this board think that's some how heroic?? I think the incident raises a lot of questions.
Bronco | 8:01 a.m. Oct. 9, 2009
Are you serious? Bronco knew about it that soon? I thought he was the type to stick his head in the sand and pretend not to know about things for months like the Teo DUI.

needs a share of Rudys. Not every player can be a starter or backup but thanks a bunch to these students who are paying for their education and are willing to put in practice with what little extra time they have. I for one would enjoy more of their stories, thanks Dick.

Dude, chill.

What Bronco gave Edwards was probably one of the cougar stickers that you get when you score a touchdown, get an interception, etc. I played and when you get one of those, it's a big deal because it tells everyone in an undisputable way you contributed to the team.

Keep pushing, Edwards! The world DOES in fact need more "Rudys"!
TX Coug | 7:57 p.m. Oct. 9, 2009
A "special" sticker? Hmmm, is this kindegarten or football? There is little wonder why the Cougs are struggling.

I am proud of you matt!!!!
