On of the most popular teams in the world comes to Utah, and the team expects only 17,000 people to show up?!?

RSL has a problem.
RH | 7:36 a.m. Oct. 7, 2009
Surprised they expect that many. REAL is such a boring team and that goes along with the game they play.....DULL! Its like watching paint dry.
Nussdorfer AC | 8:12 a.m. Oct. 7, 2009
There's no problem, actually 17,000 is a strong showing considering this game is not part of the season ticket holder package. It will be a enjoyable game to go to.

Soccer is a game that holds insufficient appeal for most of Americans. Those that have played it understand and appreciate it, but those numbers are still too few to expect a large paying gate.

I played in Europe growing up and at the college level. Even I do not care much to watch it on T.V. It is a long game that requires patience, and a perspective to see the nuances of what is often a game of finesse.

A friend in Europe put American football (and I think American sports fans are aptly defined by the sport) this way. He said, "American football typlifies American society - too many meetings interspersed by short bursts of violence."

I love and played both football and baseball. They are different games with different tempo and attitudes. I respect the players and those who are persevering in trying to bring high-flight soccer (futbol) to American society, but with the MTV-wired attention span and appetites of most Americans that require instant gratification and distinct results, with the in-your-face personalities, it has to be a struggle to succeed.

Just my $0.02. I hope the match is fun and a success.
Home Crowd? | 8:52 a.m. Oct. 7, 2009
Not likely, but that's not the point of these games. These are money-makers, and they hope to gain a few more RSL fans from our Latino community that surrounds us.

I just find it funny that they claim they are hoping for a home crowd, but really just want to stuff their pockets with cash.

I don't blame them.

Nascar and fake wrestling are popular in the USA. I think that pretty much discredits Americans as sports crtics.

I respect the opinions of those who think soccer is a bust in the U.S. (for the most part), however, watch a game at Seattle Sounders FC and tell me Americans aren't catching on. Oh, and the fact that MLS is growing so fast it can hardly keep up. It's not going anywhere and is only getting bigger.

to pay full price for what is essentially an exhibition game?

I get that Chivas is a very poplular team especially among people from south of the border, but I hate their style. Certain countries and leagues don't play "the Beautiful game". Unfortunately most Americans have seen too much of those kinds of games and too little of Spain vs Brazil, Barca vs Real, Chelsea vs Liverpool, etc.
I love RSL and love soccer but I'm not going to this game. There are already enough diving teams in MLS that drive me nuts. Why pay (and pay extra) to watch a team I hate, that is know for diving, come play us in a meaningless game? No thanks.

I'm surprised at S2's comments about soccer being a 'long game'. I agree that it does require an understanding to fully enjoy (like anything else) but soccer is a game of constant movement that lasts just over 90 minutes.

Unlike american football or baseball, where they call 'time-in' after constant pauses and delays and where the games often drag on for hours - there is no stopping the clock in soccer. The game moves on. Soccer also doesn't require a seventh inning stretch to wake its fans.

I believe once Americans understand the game they will join ranks with the rest of the world in following the 'Beautiful Game'.

I'm grateful for all MLS is doing to help us catch up with the rest of the world.

Countries participating in American Football's Super Bowl - 1. Countries participating in Baseball's World Series - 2. Countries participating in Soccer's 2010 World Cup - well over 100 from all corners of the globe...

Chadders, I'm going to the game precisely for the same reasons you're not--to boo at the classless diving and to yell "burro" at their keeper (I try to stay a little classier than the opponent's fans, who will no doubt be yelling something else). If I'd thought about it a little, I could (should) have organized a couple of "diving judge" scorecards. Hmmm...I wonder if I can find some posterboard before I leave work...
Club America | 1:00 p.m. Oct. 7, 2009
I will be sitting front row with my Club America jersey on cursing the low-life Chivas diving lowclass futbol players. I will show them my Club America badge and let them know I hate all things Chivas. I hate Chivas. go club America. Go RSL!
ahum.. | 1:16 p.m. Oct. 7, 2009
Calling chivas one of the most popular sports franchises in the world is a complete deception. they are one of the most popular teams in mexico and nothing else..
Haters Stop | 1:17 p.m. Oct. 7, 2009
Why do people still try to be so ignorant and not acceopt the World's Game? It IS American. Our kids play it, our adults watch it, get over it! Soccer IS American and the best and biggest sport in the world, for a reason.
Anonymous | 1:59 p.m. Oct. 7, 2009
I'll be there cheering on RSL. Should be a lot of fun.
re: Haters Stop | 3:37 p.m. Oct. 7, 2009
Actually, our kids hate it- that's why they always quit and move on to American sports. We all played it as kids, hated it, and moved on.
re: Haters Stop | 7:04 p.m. Oct. 7, 2009
I played soccer, I loved it and hated it, but I've stuck with it.

It is called the beautiful game for a reason.

It's not just about the bottom line (be it profits or box scores).

It's also about that arrowing pass and scything tackle, about the arc of the ball and all those ricochets and deflections.

It's about team spirit and the sense of community which can't be faked or bought.

Because it's not just about the result, but also the way you play the game.
re; re: Its the injuries... | 7:38 p.m. Oct. 7, 2009
that are faked. The soccer floppers have infiltrated basketball and hockey to hurt those sports, as well.
tripping illegal | 10:40 p.m. Oct. 7, 2009
If football players are so tuff why is tripping and kicking players in the ankles so forbidden in football. If you ran up and kicked the QB as hard as you could in the ankle you would be thrown out of the game (after the entire other team tried to fight you). Yet it happens dozens of times per game in soccer. Before we talk about soccer players faking injuries let's make kicking and tripping a part of football and see how they take it.

I am glad to read of the support and enthusiasm shown by some here.

By "long" game, I meant exactly what you added. There are no breaks and one's attention can't wander to replays, cheerleaders, another hot dog, and turning to debate with the guy behind you in case you might miss something. Americans typically cannot abide the need to concentrate, to appreciate the art and strength of each movement, but rather only look for the end result, and a chance to bash someone (who is on the field as they can do much better than the basher), whether it be owner, referees, players, other fans. Way too negative, both in expectations and thrill-seeking.

And yeah, @Soccer, love your comment about WWF, etc., adding UCF myself. Smelly armpits of American culture, and unfortunately, exported abroad, sold as sport and competition.
re: tripping | 9:14 a.m. Oct. 8, 2009
All I know is that a friend of mine is the Head Athletic Trainer for a team in the MLS and he told me that there were so many fake injuries that he came up with a signal that the player would have to give so that he knew whether it was real or not. He said he didn't want to pull a hamstring running on to the field for an injury that did not exist.
