Who controls taxation? | 5:14 a.m. Oct. 7, 2009
I was always had the understanding that only our legislators by constitutional law were the only ones who could pass or legislate tax laws.

So why are schools, county assessor, and other agency's being allowed to tax without representation? At these meeting there better be someone from the legislator overseeing these meetings of aggressive taxation. And the legislators better be doing what they are elected and paid to do, stop this kind of illegal bonding and taxing of citizens.

Sure, everyone is hurting but taxation can only be done by representation and the schools are not elected legislators with the authority to tax.

We are in a depression and too many government agency's and education think citizens can keep up with irresponsible government and education. The more they tax and spend the worse the economy gets and the closer to socialism we become.

Taxation can be assessed by any government (federal, state, local). That means that the taxes assessed by the county for construction of schools in that county is perfectly legal without the presence of the legislature. And I for one applaud Davis County School District for being up front with its plans and for keeping its promises in the past. I have lived in Davis County for the last 32 years and have seen it grow. I graduated from Layton High in 1979 and it was the newest high school in the district. It has just gone thru a rehab and is ready for another to support growth in the area. DSD is one of the best districts in the nation and I support the way they handle their growth. What makes it hard for them is the pressure that they receive from people stuck on "not in my back yard". Grow up. Our kids deserve the best in education and DSD is trying to provide it. They said taxes won't increas and I believe them.
Taxation without representation? | 8:38 a.m. Oct. 7, 2009
I read that statement above but that doesn't make any sense. The general public is represented by the school board-- which has been elected by the people. I cannot understand how this can be taxation without representation. If you do not agree with the bonds, then show that at the polls, or contact your local elected officials.

Please get informed. Bond authorizations elections for school districts are determined by boards of education. They are elected by the voters! They are our representatives.
I live in Bountiful. Count me as a fan of Davis School District. We have good teachers, good schools, and the Davis Board of Education has represented us in a responsible manner.
I particularly appreciate the fact a yes vote will NOT result in a tax increase. The debt tax rate will remain the same.

"I particularly appreciate the fact a yes vote will NOT result in a tax increase. The debt tax rate will remain the same."

This really is a misrepresentation. Isn't a more accurate statement that a yes vote will mean that the debt tax rate voted on in years past will be extended and rather than the rates going down, because the time limit on that earlier assessment has run its course, the rate will again be increased? Yes, the debt tax rate will continue to be what it has been, but please don't characterize it as no increase in taxes. It is an increase over what the rates would have been with a yes vote.

It's this type of masking of facts that causes distrust. It makes me think you may be a district representative trying to spin the facts.

If families continue to deliberately choose to have alot more children, then there is a point where society must begin to reflect on who will be responsible for the welfare of these new human beings. For those with smaller families, no children, the elderly, or even young adults who are just beginning to carry out their adult responsibilities, there may need to be a renewed discussion about fairness and equity in taxation and educating children in the State of Utah. Who gains and loses. What is fair? It costs a lot of money to educate a child. Who should be shoulder this increasing burden and responsibility?

Yes Vote Here | 9:38 p.m. Oct. 13, 2009
I've always been impressed with the way that DSD has approached and handled their requests for bonding. Each time the provide information on their intentions for money, if county residents will see any dollar amount increase on their bill, and what the goals are. The schools they have listed all are facing growth and there has to be room made. I also like that they try to buy up the land they need for the future, thus avoiding future struggles to get land in prime areas.

I have no issue voting yes on this bond. DSD has always shown that they have been careful and responsible with the bond funds they are given. Thanks DSD for doing whats best for Davis County and its residents.
add n more! | 9:32 a.m. Oct. 16, 2009
would the DSD get more schools built. They (DSD) currently have school buildings that need more classrooms added and updated. More teachers are needed in the classroom, the ratio is about 33/1 in a classroom setting.

And the transportation is hauling students that live a mile to half a mile away from school. That should be cut to five miles from school to get hauled to school-BUDGET on the gas price!!!
