I'm excited for the upcoming basketball season. The Cougars have a very good team coming back, but the MWC championship is tough to win.

Maybe this will be the year that BYU finally gets that 1st-round NCAA tournament monkey of their backs.

This BYU team has the maturity and talent to do that.

Go COUGS!
OUCH | 11:46 a.m. Oct. 6, 2009
Sorry Utah, but this dialogue keeps going. BYU just keeps getting all the MWC respect. I'm a big cougar fan, but I will be the first to admit that we all know BYU will lose in the first round (like every other year), the Utes have had two excellent seasons in football, while BYU has just been respectable, but BYU keeps getting all the love.

I wonder what Utah will have to do to some day measure up.
Anonymous | 11:57 a.m. Oct. 6, 2009
Wow, Utah is only two points away from being picked in the bottom half of the MWC, and that's two points above a better New Mexico team.

How bad does Utah have to be to get a coach up there?

Has anyone spoke to Tommy Conner, one of the best college coaches in the region, and a Utah Alum?
UNLV | 11:58 a.m. Oct. 6, 2009
The rebels will win the conference. Won't even be a contest.
Stuart G. Crump | 11:59 a.m. Oct. 6, 2009
Let's hope the BYU can win a tournament game this year. I'm starting to feel like an old, bald man waiting and hoping for his hair to grow back.
Dallas | 12:02 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
Yet they still won't win a first round NCAA Tourney game. Oh well... who cares.
All right! | 12:06 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
Nice to see the u finally get ranked in something! 4th, sweet!
I hope  | 12:07 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
the utes don't have to play the babtists again! That could kill their ranking.
BYU will still be hated | 12:14 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
Because of the fans!!!
DRLL | 12:18 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
I love when the media writes an article stating who the media has picked as the favorite to win the MWC. Shouldn't the "media" be required to include a disclaimer that they have only been right 2% of the time over the last 20 years? I have no qualms with BYU being picked to win the MWC, but let's face it: the media are a bunch of cattle following each other over a cliff. They are never right about these things. They have long ago forgotten how to provide real analysis and insight to an issue.
Re: Spelling Bee | 12:22 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
I am neither a BYU fan or a Utah fan, but that has to be one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. BYU is not a national power, but thanks for the laugh.
RE: Ernest Bass | 12:23 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
Yep and BYU will always have a national championship.
Re: Spelling Bee | 12:24 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
Maybe if you team ever gets past the first round, you can talk. But until then, keep your mouth shut.
Jackson | 12:27 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
I asked Jackson Emery the other day if this year's team will be as good as last year. He said it should be better. Everyone on the team has worked hard in the off season and Jackson has a year under his belt since his mission.

I think Utah will also be a very good team.
It should be a fun season.
Re: OUCH | 12:27 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
Measure up to what exactly? Not getting out of the First Round in over a decade? Or making it to the fantastic Veges Bowl 4 years in a row and playing and getting beat by mediocre to bad teams? I sure am glad that Utah doesn't measure up to that
National Power? | 12:28 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
When was the last time BYU won an NCAA tournament game?
Sign of respect | 12:32 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
Gotta laugh at the fans who have already penciled BYU into the NCAA tournament with an opening round loss.

UNLV was exposed as a fraud who couldn't even win their own MWC invitational on their home court last season. This season will be no different except BYU will sweep the Rebels home and away.
Duh | 12:36 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
Your right Dallas but that's what makes Basketball better then football.....A PLAYOFF.
Much ado about nothing...  | 12:40 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
I really can't stand pre-season polls or rankings. Could you find a more blatantly biased forum? It all flies out the window them moment the season starts anyway. Just a reason for the press to flap their gums about something. It's not how you start, its how you finish.

Go Utes!
Please Ernest | 12:42 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
This article is about basketball. That is a game played with a round, not oblong, ball. Or am I going too fast for you?
Wow.... | 12:44 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
BYU, NCAA basketball powerhouse, has fans feeling all tough and frisky becuase of a preseason poll prediction, in October no less.

This from fans of a school with the lowest winning percentage, all time, in the NCAA Basketball tournament (among teams that have played in at least 20 games).

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooo Cougars!

Emery the best player in the conference? MWC is such a powerhouse conference!!!
Credibility | 12:55 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
Honestly, if I hear that Tavernari is picked to be all conference, that completely throws all credibility in the report out of the window. That guy is terrible. The guy shoots the ball every time he touches the ball. He is a joke. Fredette could be fantastic though. We will see.
I think the Utes will be decent, but obviosly are missing the big man that helped them win. Sadly, I don't think either team will win the conference.
USU will have a good team again though too. Basketball should be fun, but I live for football. I will think about basketball in a few more months. It looks like the press who voted took that basic approach as well.
Grow Up or Go Away!!! | 12:55 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
I think the only thing that deserves low ratings are Utah AND BYU fans who continually knock each other down.

When will you grow up and just enjoy sports? You all act like 1st graders and you are both embarrasing to your respective schools.

I have lived in different locations around the country and I have seen rivalries. This is not a rivalry. Please go away and let the rest of us carry on an adult conversation about college sports.
Cougarf@n | 1:01 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
I love all the ewets pointing out how long it's been since BYU won an NCAA tournament game. It's kind of silly considering the last three or four years Utah's been sitting at home watching. Since when did it become better to go to the NIT (or worse, the CIB) than to go to the NCAAs, even with a first round exit? I guess Utah can be congratulated for finally going to the NCAAs in 2009 where they embarassed themselves against a lower seed. BYU's losses have been mostly close games against 6-9 seeds. It'd be great to get a win, but the string of losses in games BYU wasn't favored to win is nowhere near as embarrassing as Utah's loss against a much lower seed. How can you talk smack after that?

As for next year, BYU should be great with most of the impact players returning. The loss of Cummard (who dissappeared in every big game) won't be significant, but the new players coming in will be. I've know better than to predict an NCAA tournament win, but at least I know BYU will be in it.

should be a great year  | 1:08 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
for the MWC
BYU | 1:09 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
slow and old need I say more?
Jackson | 1:16 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
I totally forgot about Jackson Emery - this year will be fun. That guy was a stud fresh off his mission and will be even better this year. Fast basketball is on its way.
RE: Grow Up or Go Away!!! | 1:18 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
The same goes for you. So what great "rivalries" are you talking about? You can't possibly tell us North Carolina/Duke, Kentucky/Louisville, etc. don't rip each other. I am a huge Duke fan and love sports, but I hate North Carolina and love any chance to rip their team and fans. That is what is great about college sports. I was reading an ESPN article today about the Florida- LSU game this saturday and a bunch of LSU fans are texting Florida's players, and I am willing to bet they are not wishing them to play hard and just have fun. You should just focus on pee-wee sports where everyone is a winner.
Polls | 1:29 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
This poll tells me one thing that if the u is going to finish forth this year in the conference the MWC is very weak. After losing 4 seniors and the big man that carried the team last year I think a 6th place finish is more probable but maybe the conference is that bad. Utah is a showdow of its once great self. Utah is on the same level or worse than BYU. BYU has beat Utah 5 out of the last 6 games. Did you hear that Utah, the once respectable program has fallen. Please bring back the fat man, that guy could coach and recruit. I would take him and his heart condition any day over a guy that screams and talks about how good he is doing!!!
Fact is... | 1:33 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
Utah was won eighteen (count them 18) NCAA tournament games since BYU last had a single win in the NCAA tourney.

Much like the two Schools Football history in bowl games the Utes have a long history of producing on the national stage while BYU has a long history of choking on that same stage.

Utah did tie for the MWC title last year and wond the MWC tournament so it is not like BYU fans have not been looking up to Utah Basketball lately... Utah out-performed the Coogs just last year.
Re: Re: Ernest Bass | 1:40 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
And the Utes will always have two national championships in basketball. Us Ute fans don't talk about them much because they happened a long time ago. You Cougar fans could learn a thing or two about not talking about old championships.

If players from a championship team are old enough to be members of AARP you shouldn't talk about it any more.

I'm an OSU alum as well as a Ute alum. The Buckeyes last football championship was in 2002. I never hear anyone bring it up, ever.
I'll say it again | 1:42 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
I said it last preseason. I will not watch any BYU games this year until the NCAA tournament. Until they can at least win one game nothing else matters.
Aaron W. | 1:57 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
Go Cougars!!!!!!
Go back to Boise! | 1:59 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
Embarrassed themselves by losing to Arizona. How does a BB team get embarrassed by losing to Arizona. You compete against a future NBA star-Hill, and a future NBA player-Budinger- and you play as hard as Utah played and cut the lead to 3 late in the game and you were embarrassing? Playing Arizona is not like scheduling North, South, West Iowa, Ill., and Wash (something BYU is very good at in BB and FB)
The REALITY is . . .  | 2:03 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
And what will the Cougars do once they win the MWC? First, get tossed from the MWC tournament. Second, lose in the first round of the NCAA tournament. That's what the article forgot to point out. This happens every year.
re: Fact is...  | 2:04 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
You call winning the Emerald bowl the "national stage?"

Get real. 99.9% of college football fans couldn't name a single football bowl game Utah has won outside of their two BCS games.

If you want a clue about how much Utah's bowl wins have affected their status on the national stage, check the final rankings at the end of almost all of those bowl winning seasons.

No final ranking for Utah = meaningless win by a mediocre Utah team over another equally mediocre bowl team.

----------------------

Utah has a great legacy in basketball, but any objective observer would tell you that the Utah basketball program is only a shadow of its former self. Utah could easily finish in the bottom half of the MWC this season. How many times did that happen in the Majerus era?
National championship | 2:07 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
The only time I hear Cougs bring up a national championship is after a Ute brings up BCS. History is either relevant or it is not. If history is not relevant, we should only focus on the present season. If history is relevant, we should consider it all. This season, BYU will beat Utah by at least 10 at home.
No National Championships | 2:09 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
Utah has won an AAU championship and an NCAA championship in basketball; Utah has never won a National Championship in basketball.

Utah's 1944 NCAA basketball championship team only played 3 legitimate games during the entire regular season.

To call what Utah did in 1944 a "national championship" sullies the very term "national champion".
Re: RE: Grow Up or Go Away@ 1:18 | 2:09 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
You missed the point. Grow Up!!! While you may “love any chance to rip their team and fans" there are a great number of us fans that "would love for you to shut up" and don’t enjoy you ripping on any team or anything. The immaturity of a few ruins the fun of the many. Grow up!!!
secret revealed | 2:10 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
I recently heard of a player that the BYU is recruiting and he will change the face of the MWC. His name is Sasquatch and he lives in the mountains near Provo. He could use a shower and some clothing, but WATCH OUT, he will be a formidable presence on the court for Cougs.
Over-rated | 2:10 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
BYU is just a bunch of pasty-faced white boys trying to stay up with the brothers. It ain't gonna happen!!!
1. SDSU
2. UNLV
3. New Mexico
4. Utah
so what | 2:14 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
Who cares what they do in the regular season, the cougs can never pick up a win in the tourney. Maybe this year will be different, maybe.
Bandwagon fan | 2:15 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
re: I'll say it again | 1:42 p.m.

Then you're not a TRUE BLUE BYU fan, probably not even a true college basketball fan, and we don't need nor want your support.

Become a fan of a team like Kentucky or Kansas or Duke that recruits 3 or 4 blue chip players every year, that way you won't have to waste money buying new gear, since you can stick with BLUE.
Re: Re: OUCH | 12:27 p.m. | 2:17 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
I recognized all of the things from your comment in my original comment. What you failed to understand, is that I am asking what Utah has to do to get some respect, because they sure don't get much, even from the media.

I wonder why.

Maybe it's just because we all really know who is consistently more successful, not just a few years here and there. But who knows, if Utah can keep going for a few more years the way they have, maybe, just maybe they might get a little love.
