Little learned in Cougars' win over Ags

On the contrary. We learned that BYU's offense will be its downfall this year, where its defense was last year.

Hall still can't quit being nice to the opposing defenses. He continues to feel sorry for them and passes the ball over to them.

BYU's offensive play calling is getting predictable. It's defensive play calling is getting timid.

I'm just hoping they can get to a bowl game---of some sort.

Brad Rock had an entirely different view on the game, and gave the Aggies a lot more respect. Mr. Rock's story was also much more substantive, so I'll give the nod to him, rather than this fluff piece.

Ok game obviously we lost again and quite frankly BYU is still another level above us but the constant cries for us to move to 1-AA are a little over stated, unless of course 35-17 is how you "handle" a 1-AA team. Speaking of 1=AA teams SUU scored basically the same amount of points against USU as BYU. Weird.

BYU's D was the biggest positive surprise but all in all this team is nothing like the Utah team we played in Logan a year ago that was simply dominant. Particularly with Max Hall as QB. I really figured BYU would throw all over us because our D Line is lacking a bit but ultimately it was our secondary that made some plays as Max Hall continued to show why he is a pretender.

Maybe all you BYU fans chirping for Nelson will get him:)

What is wrong with the FIELD? | 1:07 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
What is wrong with that new field? It shreds during every play. I thought it was supposed to be the best in the west?

Is there really any doubt that BYU will make it to a bowl game? This is a team which will probably end the season with only two to four losses. There are many, many bowl games that take teams with only six wins. Somehow, I think we may get into a bowl game.
Dick | 6:40 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
It seems to me Harmon has the interceptions reversed. Didn't the first interception "float" while the second was overthrown?
Dick II | 6:45 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
While BYU was clearly the better team last night, I think a couple of USU decisions were strange.

1. Down 14-7 with just seconds to go until halftime, and deep in your own territory, why run an option/pitch? If you want to try and score, at least throw the ball downfield where an interception causes less harm. Don't risk a fumble in that situation. The best move would have been to take a knee and kill the clock.

2. Going for the first down on 4th and 1 with a 21-10 score on your own 30 yard line is plain stupid.

On the BYU side, why would you take USU's offensive holding penalty when USU has the ball 4th and 10 at BYU's 39 yard line? Punting is harder from the 40 than from the 50. BYU took two penalties which allowed USU's kicker to "kick away" and the ball was downed at the 3 yard line. Sometimes, an offensive team will intentionally take a delay of game to give the punter a better chance. BYU gave USU that better chance. Weird.

BYU won. Wasn't that the objective? By how much seems to be more important to some of you. I don't get it!
Hall | 7:33 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
Is great giving the ball to the opponent, and so many BYU fans thought he's was going to be the next Heisman Trophy winner this year. I didn't know that the Heisman Trophy winner could increase his chances by throwing so many interceptions!!!

Hall is not that great of a QB.......sorry Cougars but your season is about to change once MWC play begins!!!
Re: BlueBoy | 7:56 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
Nice try, Mr. Ute Troll. I'd give you an 8 out of 10 on the troll scale. I especially like the subtle homosexual reference in your name. Very clever, not many people will get it.

Real BYU fans remember that Max Hall led the Cougar offense on a long, game-winning drive to beat a top-10 Oklahoma team just four weeks ago.

Ute and Aggie trolls try to pretend that the average BYU fan wants to see Max Hall benched.

Come now Justin (aka BlueBoy). They will go to a bowl, just not one we want.
Re: Blue Boy | 8:28 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
BYU is 4 and 1. If your only concern is that they go bowling, I think they'll make it. Now if you are concerned that they get to a good bowl game, then they should play in another conference (or go undefeated, but that's not going to happen).

But you are right about Hall - he can be a good QB, but the picks are getting very old. Be like Young or Detmer - if you're going to throw two picks, then throw 5 tds. He confidence is very low.

Chip | 8:53 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
We learned that Hall has no self control and is impatient. Those interceptions were not called plays. He is a maverick.
TED | 8:56 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
I think that I finally learned that BYU does'nt have any fire in them. If they play with energy, they can win. No emotion! At the first of the year it seemed that BYU had great emotion but where has it gone? NO LEADER ON THE FIELD!!! Someone better step up to this challenge!

I could be wrong Hall but I think the season started last week against Colorado
Mizzou Blue | 10:01 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
I agree that we learned several things last night:
1. Defense is improving. They were the difference makers last night.
2. We've got a running game. Use it more.
3. Max Hall is too mistake-prone in critical situations. This has been a consistent pattern with him since he's started. It wouldn't hurt to sit him out a series or two and let Riley see what he can do. Plus, it might help Max clear his thinking a bit. I realize Coach worries about Max's confidence level, but maybe a wake up call for him would do him good.

Bottom line though is we won last night. Congrats Cougars. And, I have a lot of confidence in Bronco. He's got our program going in the right direction. Best of luck in the games ahead. Go BYU!!

A great? power back? DIck, you try to build things up and use adjectives that aren't right. If he is great, he will be in the NFL and will be a star. A good back wil be in the NFL and play. A decent back will play in college. Try to write stories that accurately reflect what is happening and stop trying to build up the actual story. You are creating misinformed fans and that is a disservice to your readers and that is......THE TRUTH
Cougarf@n | 10:34 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
This game played out just about how I expected. A USU team that was able to put points on the board against Utah and Texas A&M should have been able to score on BYU. It's also not surprising that an Anderson coached defense makes a couple of plays on Halls passes. But in the end BYU was just a better team on both sides of the ball.

I couldn't agree more with Aggie Fan that USU is no Div-II quality team this year (although in all fairness its been a decade since that was not the case). In fact, I think USU will go on to win another 4-5 games this season and finish 3rd to 5th in a down year for the WAC. I'd love to see USU be bowl bound this year and I hope USU fans think that BYU won by only 18 because USU is a better team, not because BYU is overrated.

As for the Hall interceptions, I thought the second pass was overthrown (Hall's mistake), but the first was just a great play by the USU defender. I'd take USU's DB's and Punter anyday.
@The truth | 11:22 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
Just because a player is great in college does not guarantee they will be great in the NFL. They are two different games...
Defense | 11:24 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
Defense was good? Maybe. But very disappointed that they gave up that last TD. A good defense wouldn't do that.
Gabsports | 11:29 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
Exactly, there's nolider in this team, not even between the coaches. Hall can make any costly mistakes and nobody says anything to him, instead they touching softly in the back like saying "oh, no worries, it's okay". I hate that Bronco is there and doesn't say anything when those mistakes happen, probably he thinks that after the game is over he will have a say, but by then it might be too late. The truth is there's no lidership and we will have at least 2 more losses and those will come because the luck of a good defense (make no mistakes, USU is a bad team) and because of Hall's generosity to the other team (interceptions, bad decisions, no lidership, etc). The good news is that Hall won't be the QB next year, but the bad news is that Bronco still will be the coach. We will be competing for the conference title but never to the BCS with bronco and his way undersized secondary.

BYU Football fans= worst in the nation. Dont know anything about football.

Dear Anonymous:
To create a generality such as the one just made shows true class(not). If the only purpose you have to write is to degrade, then don't.
BYU did a great job defensively on a reported offensive juggernaut and limited what they could do, even with the turnovers. I am not a fan as in FANatic but I think that this season, every game will be something that I will enjoy.
re: Ted | 12:55 p.m. Oct. 4, 2009
I think BYU's lack of fire is a reflection of the Coach. I listened to Bronco's pregame show and the dude is very analytical but he puts you sleep. Put a little emotion in the game.
Max is Great | 1:33 p.m. Oct. 4, 2009
Nelson is better. Worried about the picks? Seen too many over thrown and under thrown balls? Give Nelson a shot now, don't throw the season away.
Y Fan | 11:35 a.m. Oct. 5, 2009
To CougarF@n: "This game played out just about how I expected. A USU team that was able to put points on the board against Utah and Texas A&M should have been able to score on BYU."

Regardng scoring against Utah, Utah State scored exactly 17 against the Utes, the same as they did against BYU.

The point made about scoring points against A&M makes sense, but Utah State reference defies logic.
RE: Max is Great... | 10:49 a.m. Oct. 7, 2009
Nelson hasn't proved himself to be any better than Hall. He'll be scrambling all over the field to make a pass. To short to be a pocket player.
