Amen! | 12:42 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
I don't believe any realistic Aggie fan thought we were going to win this one (thought it would have been quite enjoyable if we had), but Mr. Rock is right on. The Aggies are making progress, and most decent folks will admit that is a positive thing.

To all those predicting that the Cougars would win by 50 points, or so, remember that downplaying the Aggies now does nothing for you. You didn't destroy the Aggies, so it's best to admit that the Aggies are much improved, and might even be a decent team. That way, you beat a decent team in a hard-fought game. If you insist on a verbal beat down, everyone else is going to ask why, if USU is THAT bad, you didn't beat them by 50. Think about it.
1-3 is not progress | 2:36 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
Utah State needs to arrive when they want Ws and not "good efforts."

All I have been hearing all year about Utah State is how this team is on the rise and progress is being made.

---> 1-3 is not progress and 1-3 is not a program on the rise.

The mentality needs to be change. Reality is team is still a debacle and the season is in shambles.
SJ Bobkins | 3:52 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
Mr Rock, You're trying too hard to justify all your hype, with the talk of the mighty Uggies raising from the ashes. I admit that Anderson has instilled a new feeling and optimism, as with any new hire. But to predict a BOWL GAME appearance for this year's Uggs, shows you either fell on your noggin too many times or you were first in the Kool-Aid line at Jonestown. As with any blow-hard reporter, you will always attempt to justify your outrageous remarks, I understand fully. Nevertheless, USU will not go to any bowl game within 5 years, and certainly not this year as you wrote.
3-8 is still 3-8

I especially liked that last touchdown. Our USU guy clearly pushed off and came down with a foot on the line but was still called a touchdown.

Go aggies.

To Coach Anderson(sp). I watched a USU team that perhaps may be on the up and up in the years to come. Had USU been able to make a few more big plays, the mighty Cougars just might have been handed a LOSS!

One can only hope!!!
Anonymous | 7:24 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
You might say I'm crazy, but so far this season is going exactly the way it should be going for USU. This is what we need. What we don't need is to win 8 games this season, 10 next season, and lose Anderson to a higher profile program, and be back where we started before any REAL changes can take place.

We are now 1-3, which sounds bad. But we played 3 tough teams much better than we have in years. The kids have some confidence going into the WAC season. We should pick up 3-5 more wins in WAC play. I'm guessing we'll finish the season with 5 wins.

So we win 5 games this year, 6-7 next year, 7-8 the year after that, etc. THAT is how you build a program and reverse history. At USU we don't need a flash in the pan "Tom L. Smith" experience. We need a decade long "Lavell Edwards" experience.

GO AGGIES!
W and L | 7:40 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
It still comes down to did you win. Everyone is on the Gary Andersen band wagon, he is a great coach and even nicer guy. Improvement in this business is measured in how many games you WIN. Is anyone seeing that 1-3 is not improving so far. Sure I know it takes time, you have to give the coaches 4 years so they are playing with their players, the ones they bring to Utah State. The fact remains improvement comes in wins. Will you be writing the same thing about the team in 2 months when they only have 2 win's,(I hope they have more) but its not going to happen.
Either Way | 7:45 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
On a better field with more competent refs, this game might have gone either way. I for one am not impressed with #20 byu. I think they will drop in the next poll.
USU Alum | 7:49 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
Right on, Rock. Anderson has brought a new attitude to the Ags.

While he inherited a lot of good players to start the year, as Washington fans have also discovered there's no substitute for good coaching.

I think the Ags will win 5 games this year.
Huh? | 7:57 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
Brad, did you write this article before watching the game, because you wanted so badly to say that the Aggies are looking better? I agree that I think the Aggies will turn it around with their new coach, but they sure did not show it tonight. They only managed 80 yards in the first half on offense?

Sorry, that DOES look like the neighborhood wimps still. They need to show something on the field better than that.
Dallas Aggie | 8:15 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
I for one was expecting an upset, and I believe the actual team and coaches were as well. I think any one can lose on any given day..ie BYU beating OU. There is no way that should happen, but it did and hats off the the Y for that. I look forward to this match up getting more even in the coming years. Please remember, it is not like BYU beat USU by 20+ points every time they have beat us these last 16 years. There have been some extremely close games, and one that irritates my soul was the 34-33 come back for BYU in Logan during Crowton's years. Anyhow, we will start beating you guys next year at home. Count on it.

Go Aggies!

bluewildered | 8:32 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
USU is a much improved team. Hats off or helmets off to this new direction. Believe it or not, there are some of us cougar fans who recognize this, and felt fortunate to have come away with a win. I don't feel like the game was "never in jeopardy." Until a couple of miscues in the fourth, this game was up for grabs.

In truth, anyone with common sense and the ability to put aside the smack and chest thumping color representation would also admit that the Utah game had a similar feel, just four weeks ago.

Congrats to the Aggie program.
cougar grad-am in az. | 8:43 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
Congratulations USU!!! You played your hearts out. USU did not win the war but they won the battle. It looks like it will be a series to enjoy if USU can show up to play football every time. The scoreboard does not truly indicated the closeness of the game.

Way to go Cougars!! Max, you keep on throwing interceptions. What's going on?? The turnover ratio is out of whack. It is good that the defense showed up for this game and kept the team in the game. Way to go defense!!! Overall, it was a pretty good game but those turnovers are going to be your Achilles heal, Max. Max, when the team is ahead you're a pretty good team general. When the team is down three to four touchdowns, you're worse than a corporal.
I don't think so.... | 8:48 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
If you really believe that, 'AMEN', then you didn't read any of the posts all over the internet on Thursday and Friday. Almost to a person, they (the Aggie fans and ute posers) claimed USU would win.

Your claim, my friend, is historical revisionism.

This article could not have been written by Brad Rock. It was actually positive about the Aggies. Brad, are you okay?! GO AGGIES!
A diss and a compliment | 9:40 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
So many of the arrogant from the TDS seem to insist that the Aggies should drop down to 1AA. While I realize these are mostly just fans trying to insult us in the spirit of BYU sportsmanship it is interesting to note that if we really are a 1AA team what does that make BYU with a #20 ranking?

Point being that BYU and Utah are both really good football programs, we have a ways to go before we can hang BUT we are making progress. To say we should drop to 1AA is as much a slam on the Y and the U as it is USU. I mean truly is that how you take it to a 1AA opponent on your home fields? Really?

Personally I think BYU and Utah are much better than 35-17 winners against a 1AA school. I realize BYU fans (Utah fans typically much classier) are going to continue with talk of arrogance and us stepping down but really I think you are better than that.

True true one of these days (not necessarily) against BYU or Utah, we need to quit "making progress" and MAKE A WIN!

Go Ags.
Mizzou Blue | 10:19 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
Some of you Aggie fans sound like BYU fans. Bad turf, terrible officiating, if just a couple of plays had gone differently, etc.

I for one am happy that USU is competing much better. It makes us have to play harder to win, which improves our game. We showed that last night by the way our defense came ready to play.

Now, Coach Bronco has to do something with the inconsistency in our QB performance. Too many intereceptions again this year. We've got great running backs, excellent receivers, but there's a problem at QB that needs to get corrected. Still early enough in the season to improve Hall's performance or to see what Riley can do.

Ade | 10:33 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
To the individual '1-3 is not progress', you have no clue about football and playing on the road. Playing Texas A&M, BYU and Utah on the road would be a difficult scdedule for any team. All of these teams had to keep their starters in for most of these games. Playing teams is their own conference will be better match-ups. Go Aggies, from a UTE fan.
Anonymous | 10:53 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
BYU in great fashion shut up all those who said USU would win. Rock says a 1-3 Aggie team has a pulse but BYU is still an enigma? This is after wins against OK, a very good CSU team (who will beat Utah on Saturday) and an inspired USU team. I think the Cougs answered a lot of questions. It's just that the press and rival fans refuse to believe the answer.
Aggie squasher | 10:59 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
BYU squashed any momentum USU was looking for during the game. USU goes up first, BYU scores 21 UNANSWERED points. USU gets down to the Y's 6, they have to settle for a field goal. Then the Cougs answer immediately with 14 more UNANSWERED points.

I know USU played hard, everybody does when they play the Y, but I'm not going to let that effort over-shadow what BYU did, they controlled that game everytime they needed too.
Anonymous | 11:01 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
Did any of you watch this game?

Borell ran...nowhere. His vaunted elusiveness that was going to give the BYU D fits? Utterly contained by the BYU D-line.

Robert Turbin and his "pure speed and athleticism"? 0 touchdowns, under a hundred yards. The Gaggie ground game got torn up like the pasture they were playing on. If not for Max's repeated efforts to throw it to them, they would not have scored until the fourth quarter(And like last year, on the third string D).

On Defense, the Gaggies couldn't tackle an algebra test. When it became obvious that Max was again unable to differentiate white shirts from blue, BYU lined up man on man and shoved the ball down the Gaggie throats. Repeatedly running the ball up the gut from five yards out to score touchdowns is the ultimate in "We're just better than you" football. What'd they average six yards a carry?

Improved toughness? Please. This team is the same pathetic wreck it's been for decades.

Know why cougar fans hate the Gaggies? They are as blind and bitter as a ute, but they have NOTHING to back it up.
Anonymous | 11:58 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
Get over yourselves BYU. You are average in a good conference. Remember Florida State. This is what would happen if you played in a good conference. The Oklahoma game I am convinced was a fluke. Everyone gets lucky once in a while. For the most part BYU does not win against good teams. How did Miami do when you beat them? I bleieve they were only one game over 500. Get the hint.

Enough with the moral victory talk.. There are no moral victories! Until Utah state stops becoming proud of playing well against semi major conference teams like byu and Utah they will be the wimps. Think about it, byu is not exactly a powerhouse team!
Rock? Really? | 2:54 p.m. Oct. 3, 2009
You need to get off the Ute/Anderson bandwagon. The Ags have done nothing except beat Southern Utah and even then they gave up plus thirty points. BYU last night was never in doubt from start to finish. The Aggies had no answer for BYU's running game. They scored their last touchdown with 2 seconds on the clock when BYU's starters were already in the showers.
What a lame article. An article like this should be written about a 3-1 team with a victory the night before.
Fsu fAn  | 3:13 p.m. Oct. 3, 2009
Byu collapsed under the pressure of the national stage. Pretty wimpy. If byu are wimps then what does that make Utah state??? Little kitten wimps I guess. Sure they are improved but to call a 1-3 team not wimps anymore is pretty nonsensical. What is it based on? Even beating semi major conference teams does not get you respect. You have to beat the big boys to get my respect.
Moral victory? | 3:21 p.m. Oct. 3, 2009
We will show you a moral victory on December 2nd when the Aggie basketball team beats the baby Cougs by over 20. You can count on that!
What's with the haters? | 3:44 p.m. Oct. 3, 2009
Rock writes a nice article on the Aggies and the classless Y fans show up. USU has made progress and the WAC season will show. The Y fans try to build their self estem by continuing to rip on the Aggies.

USU has one more "guaranteed" loss against BSU which is better than any team in the MWC this year. The Aggies beat Hawaii last year and stand a real chance to beat every team they play from now on outside of BSU.

If the Aggies stink it up in WMC play then by all means make fun of them. But to be pronouncing them dead on arrival at this point in the season just shows your own insecurity and a real lack of intelligence.
Why do people hate Y? | 4:30 p.m. Oct. 3, 2009
Review posts 2:36, 3:52, 7:40, 8:25, 11:01 . . .

Cougs are always on the verge of being national champs. Everyone else is always failing. Cougs deserve benefit of doubt on nasty loses to Utah, TCU, Vegas Bowl, Florida State just to mention recent history. No one else deserves any benefit of a doubt.

Sounds like some Y fans have been skipping General Conference.
Mike | 5:02 p.m. Oct. 3, 2009
To the Logan Valley State aggies: 35-17, 26 wins out of the last 29 games.

I'm not sure you could even compete in Div III.
Dear Mike | 5:27 p.m. Oct. 3, 2009
You are smart and funny. Valley State . . hahahahahaha.

You might be on to something though. If USU loses by 18 to a team that got blown out at home by Florida State then maybe USU doesn't belong in the top 120 teams.

By the way that Florida State lost today and last week, any team with a pulse should be able beat a team that was destroyed by Florida State.
BigBYUFan | 6:49 p.m. Oct. 3, 2009
I am not sure that scoring 14 points, when it doesn't matter, is a badge of honor.
BIGGER BYU FAN | 7:35 p.m. Oct. 3, 2009
SInce you are into the my dad is bigger than your dad in Provo, try this analogy. BYU lost to FSU-tough team right? No they are a pretender with astounding wins against Jacksonville State, losses to the REAL teams on their Sched and a blow out win against, no not Jacksonville State but BIG BYU. Wait where was this game played? Florida? No? Provo? Really.

BYU if you are big brother you are the one who can beat down your little brothers, only because you are older but when you go to "school" against kids your own age . . . well we have all seen what happens, BYU stinks it up.

So yes Cougar fans you are great but only in your own minds.

Way to smack down USU but next time close your mouths and reserve the smack for a real opponent like FSU OR as you always advise drop to DII.

Thanks.
Hm | 8:33 p.m. Oct. 3, 2009
To all those saying 1-3 is not improvement. Last year we were 0-4 at this point and I don't believe we picked up a win until we played Idaho in WAC play. This year we have a preseason win. That is improvement if you ask me. So far that is a 25% improvement on last year's season after the same amount of games.
Anonymous | 10:08 p.m. Oct. 3, 2009
I've said it before, and these posts prove it... BYU has the most arrogant and egotistical fans of any school I've had any contact with.

Many of you cougar fans out there should be ashamed of the way you talk and act. And those of you that tolerate it need to step up and tell the crazies to knock it off.
Tired of the dairy yewts | 10:16 p.m. Oct. 3, 2009
So on wednesday it was all about how vulnerable BYU was and how improved the aggies are and look out Cougs, you stole our colors, blah, blah blah. You all popped off about scoring two garbage time td's last year and how that meant you were better and should have won. You were gonna finish it this year, gol durn it! These boards were full of...smack talk from aggie fans.

But after subjecting cougar fans to days of this nonsense, you now don't want to hear from "Classless cougar fans"? WELL, I didn't want hear your coaches scream F-bombs on live tv. Tough for all of us, huh?

You shouldn't have spent so much time calling the cougars out this week. Take your beating, and your paycheck, and go away.

And while we're here, we'll just take a page from the book of aggie fans. It doesn't matter at all if we lost to Florida State,or anyone else. We still beat you. Again. For about the last three decades. Deal with it.
Re: Tired of the dairy yewts | 12:51 a.m. Oct. 4, 2009
Most "smack talk" comes from cougar fans. Hopefully that will change with the message we received today dealing with hatred.

Every school has their classy and their not so classy fans. Same with players. Schools have classy players and not so classy players.

Speaking of taking your paycheck and go away, hasn't your team benefited from a nice paycheck a time or two? I'm betting your bitter rival's two BCS games provided your team a nice payday!

See you next year in Logan.
Gracious | 9:45 a.m. Oct. 4, 2009
The last Aggie TD was a gift. Thank Bronco for keeping most of the 1st team D off the field. Aggie fans with their lack of "everything" will continue to knock BYU. That's what anonymous people do.
Amen | 9:55 a.m. Oct. 4, 2009
@I don't think so...

I hope you meand "my friend" in a kind way, so that is the way I'll take it. I would point out that, if those that post on these boards are adequate representation of a school's total fan base, then Y fans are the arrogant, self-righteous nutjobs that everyone claims to hate about Y fans. I don't believe that, and I don't think you do either. The vast majority of Aggie fans were quite sure that the Aggies would lose (we can always hope, right?, but that's a different question). That was my claim, and I stick to it, just like I stick to the rest of my post.
@re:tired of dairy yewt | 3:01 p.m. Oct. 4, 2009
Yeah, we did indeed benefit from the two BCS paychecks the Utes cashed. We consider it repayment from the 25 years when we went to bowls every year and shared the proceeds with the utes, who did not. As for the Aggies, we finance your program with the gate receipts of you yearly beatdown
WAC or Big Sky | 12:23 a.m. Oct. 5, 2009
If Anderson can't coach the Aggies to a 7-5 regular season record and a bowl within the next 4 years, the Aggies should seriously consider joining the Big Sky conference in football. It's obvious that if the Aggies can't become competitive with Anderson as coach, that Utah State will never be competitive at the Div 1A level.
Idahoan | 11:07 a.m. Oct. 5, 2009
Classless, arrogant...that can be said of fans of any team. I'm seeing it here from Utah, USU, and BYU fans. No one has it cornered. Quit puffing out your chest that "at least I'm/we're not arrogant or classless like (fill in the blank)." If you don't see that, look in the mirror.
Provo Aggie | 1:29 p.m. Oct. 5, 2009
As an Aggie fan, I would just like to thank the majority of BYU fans and the BYU athletic administration. Unlike the BYU fans in these comments who are very negative toward Utah State. The fans Friday night (several who were sitting in the Utah State section) were very respectful. The BYU athletic department gave each of the Aggie players and coaches a gift box in their locker. When we picked up our tickets at the Utah State ticket table, their was a very nice gentleman offering to give visitors a tour of the stadium and press box. BYU works very hard to make visiting Provo a good experience for a visiting team. It is sad to me that the BYU fans who post on this blog do not do likewise.

Did any of you listen to conference and hear all the talks about loving your neighbor. Football is just a game, you play and then you go home win or lose. Life takes a little more love, not hate, in order to succeed.
1-3 | 12:02 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
Sure it doesn't sound like progress. But think before you talk. Could anyone honestly say the Aggies would win against Utah, Texas AM, or BYU? Improvement doesn't happen overnight. The Aggies are right where anyone with any sense would expect them to be at this point of the season.

The Aggies need to show they've improved WAC play. USU is a lot closer to competing in the WAC than some people think. There isn't a WAC team, except Boise St, that USU can win. USU already has a history of keeping it close against Fresno, they've had close games already against Nevada, the've notched a win over Hawaii. Just a little more toughness to put them over the edge and they can do really well in the WAC.

For the Aggies their season really starts now. This is the opportunity to prove themselves to be better than before.

Aggie Ice Cream | 10:23 p.m. Oct. 6, 2009
Our ice cream is much better than BYUs. But keep trying. Maybe you can get close if you keep trying.

LOGAN BYU FAN | 8:26 p.m. Oct. 7, 2009
There is a big difference in the USU attitude this year; they look better. BYU is a good team; to play them tougher like this is a good sign. The sad thing is Gary A will have the chance to make big bucks by leaving Logan after 3 years if he does do well, and the cycle could repeat itself. The big teams have so much more money and resources that it is hard to compete as BYU or the U, let alone USU with even fewer resources (this isn't trash talk, just numbers in terms of budget I mean) I hope Anderson loves it and becomes another Stew.
Ted Miller  | 2:48 a.m. Oct. 10, 2009
To the fans out there, remember who your schools represent, U of U and USU tax payers of the state. BYU represents the LDS church. This doesn't mean that the expectations are the same, as they should be.
I think the classless pinheads who post and boast on here have lost the respect of anyone with half a brain.
But hey if you don't want respect, keep acting your way. Keep doing what your doing to represent your schools your way. Your true colors and honor is shown.
To the fans with class don't listen to the haters. I am behind the scenes with the media, we see what really goes on. We see when there are programs that are a joke and others that are legit.
The fans only get a 1/4 of the actual pulse of a team unless they are at every practice, team meeting and game.
Sixty minutes aren't enough to give a proper evaluation of an opponent. My only word of advice to the teenagers posting on this board, grow up.
When you start acting like adults we will treat you like adults.
