Smart move by the legislature. Construction costs are at an all-time low, and the projects are more than needed. Utah County's traffic is an absolute joke, and I know that people in St. George agree that their "little town" is experiencing some massive growing pains. Infrastructure is an investment, and requesting a bond was the right decision.
Awesome!!! | 11:48 p.m. Oct. 2, 2009
Way to go, Utah! Can the state refinance my home loan at that rate?

My question is, how much would we have saved on these projects if legislative leadership had taken these steps 3-5 years ago? Anyone?

At a time when the people are facing the worst depression since before WWII why is such irresponsible spending taking place? Borrowing and funding at this time can be catastrophic to government and Utah. Look at what it did to California and we are following in their footsteps.

Our elected government must learn to sacrifice and be patient before forcing more taxes on Utah citizens for such outlandish spending. Yet another nail (more taxes) in the coffin for the decline of the economy. What good is a road that will serve no purpose if there is no one to drive on it?

This is deplorable government in action, tax and spend and more death to the economy.

Definitely the right time...What good is a AAA credit rating if you never tap it...

I'm not sure if you are being sarcastic but the State would have paid quite a premium if they would have done this 3-5 years ago.

Construction costs are substantially less in the current environment than they were just two years ago.

Average in the even lower bond rates that we just secured and you will see that we got a killer deal.

15 years of money at 2.72% is essentially free money.
NOT WISE... | 9:15 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009
Borrowing money in the name of being smart...us lucky taxpayers. ALL advice given by wise financial planners these days...GET OUT OF DEBT!!! It is time for a Utah tea party. It is better to raise the registration fees for drivers in certain areas...pay for what you use!
Can't this amazing state figure out which drivers should pay more? Raising the gas tax is smarter than bonding. Problem here, they never lower the rate!
Think of ways to cut state spending!

fanny may is 0 that is zero percent to 1/2 per cent now. Go figure
Roads again? | 4:01 p.m. Oct. 3, 2009
Do we spend money on things besides roads around here? I drive on great roads to get to the school that I work at which badly needs renovation. Then, I spend my own money on classroom supplies. Perhaps, this road bond is a good idea. I honestly do not know. I do know that a lot of money seems to go towards roads, and very little towards schools and other public property. Why is this?
Big spending & socialism | 4:32 p.m. Oct. 3, 2009
First of all, this big spending from Utah republicans has got to stop! We need to elect leaders who will not be so willing to spend our tax dollars.

Secondly, this is typical socialism and redistribution of the wealth. I don't live in Utah County. They are taking my money and spending it on Utah County roads. If Utah County residents want new roads built, they should pay for it themselves. Don't redistribute the wealth from other citizens. This socialism must stop!
Communism too | 7:32 p.m. Oct. 3, 2009
This has slipped down the slippery slope of communism and fascism.
Why bond roads? | 10:13 p.m. Oct. 3, 2009
There is nothing so egalitarian as roads. We all use them, we all pay the same tax per gallon. The more you use them the more you pay. There is nothing socialist about them.

Bonding is basic economics. Roads are consumed over a period of many years, and so you finance them for the period of time that they should last. Consume as you go, if you will.

Those who cry "Why should I pay for Utah County?" apparently missed the part about the next bonded project being in in Salt Lake County.

Perhaps the most salient point it that that billion dollars is going to be spent in the state, employing people from the state, who will be paying tax to the state which will be used for schools, etc.

I'm a big believe in paying as you go and no deficits and this bond actually meets the spirit of both of those.
