We've been telling you this about Herbert since he was a Utah County Commissioner thinking of running for Governor back in 2002.

He is the nice guy, who never works, chases cameras - looks good in front of them, and avoids tough issues like the plague.

A little history on Herbert. Back in the late 1980's there was a major league budget scandal in Utah County. It saw a Commissioner leave office early over it. What was needed is a really nice replacement who would not rock the boat at all, but restore the citizens confidence in the County Commissioner. After looking around for a few weeks a gentleman from the business community spotted this good looking guy, who was super nice to everyone, but was someone who would take directions well. Thus was Gary Herbert born into public life. He was told to look good, and stay out of the fray because the other Commissioners would do the work. He did this for over a decade as County Commissioner.

Lt Gov was perfect for him because he got to do the same. Now he is Governor and well in over his head. Sink or swim?

Sink!

Herbert has been leading out on the issues that matter to me: more jobs, better economy, and better education. I'm glad he's not allowing you and others to suck him into the debate over issues which pale in comparison to our economic well-being.

How about getting BIG GOVERNMENT out of our lives? For example: if a government can tell you what you can and cannot put into your own body YOU ARE DEFINITELY NOT FREE!

I'm unaware of anything to judge him by yet.

He's not especially good looking so thta won't help him, unlike what's his name - Huntsman. He's made some conservative sounds. I'm still waiting for something more.

Does Bob Bernick Jr know about this?. About the bible thumping GOP, OUR Biblical system was based on mercy. Capitalism is not.

I wonder if Bernick thinks it is a positive that Obama cannot make a comittment on Afganistan because he is a democrat but Herbert should judge quickly because he is a republican

Bob - your problem is that you are using a definition of "leadership" that doesn't apply in Utah politics. Leadership here is to find out where the sheep are going, and stay just in front of them - even if it is going over the edge of a cliff.

Re: Wake Up: go back to sleep. Scary Gary's leadership on those issues is a façade at best (see the comment above). His "leadership" is just enough to be sure he appears to be doing something.

Re: No record to go on: You need to wake up. He has a very long record by which he can be judged. As County Commissioner, he avoided any decision that was controversial - his favorite phrase was "help me understand this better" over and over. As Lt. Gov, he refused to implement the token ethics law passed last legislative session. His spots are very well defined, and he can't change them, even if he so wanted.

Our biblical system is based on both justice and mercy. Mercy claimeth herown (mercy to the merciful) and justice will not be robbed by mercy. Both have their place and must be perfectly balanced.

Capitalism, where it exists, is based on freedom, another highly important principle and biblical too.
"Choose ye this day whom ye shall serve".

What we have is corporate capitalism to some extent.
Government programs are coercive: Thou Shalt Not Steal, and often applied in mischievous ways in whith idleness is encouraged and industry is deterred. Read the Book of Proverbs and jot down all the proverbs that pertain to work and idleness.

Capitalism is not based on freedom, Bible basher. It's based on greed, rapaciousness, and love of bling. Get into the New Testament side of things: something about "treasure" and "heart." Bob Bernick is right on about our new Gov. Jingle. The only leaders in Utah politics in the last decade have been Gov. Huntsman & Mayor Anderson. The rest have been homegrown, corn-fed Utah beef: too addled by religion & ideology to be anything but steers.
Are you kidding me???? | 9:52 p.m. Oct. 2, 2009
Huntsman a leader??? NOT SO. Herbert follows Huntsman and is the same type of Governor...get in front of the cameras, try and look pretty but don't make any decisions or even take a stand on issues that will lose votes.
To Ammon and all Ammon-ites | 8:52 a.m. Oct. 4, 2009
capitalism: economic and political system dependent upon private capital and profit-making.
[Oxford Dictionary of Current English]

There is nothing in the definition about greed and rapaciousness or 'love of bling'. You have made your own definition and presented it as fact.

On the other hand private capital and profit making have actually become tightly controlled by government. That certainly involves a loss of freedom to the capitalist, perhaps especially to the small capitalist.

However you invented your own definition and, more importantly, made a personal attack rather than addressing the issue.

Thank you for indicating so clearly that you have no real argument.
Herbert's doing fine | 2:29 p.m. Oct. 4, 2009
Herbert is leading our state and is doing a fine job. So what if he's unsure about the 'Ethics" intitiative being proffered by people with a hidden agenda? Sorry, but Vik Arnold, Kim Burningham and Lisa Watts-Baskin are nor harbingers of justice. They are simply out for there own, selfish agenda - which is the demolition of the current government. They THINLY disguise their agenda by running intitiatives that 'play' well with the uninformed public. Talk about exploitation!
