farm subsidies | 5:35 p.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Farmers should have a fair price and tax structure, but wholesale subsidies are not the answer. This program, however, allows the American farmer and rancher to do what they do best: feed hungry people. We have an abundance and ought to share. Kudos to Blackham for supporting Obama's plan.

This sounds good for the farmers but the real fact is that these funds will go to the food brokers to whom many farmers and ranchers have contracted their products. The agriculture brokers are why farmers are struggling because they pay themselves first then the farmers and ranchers. The brokers drive down the prices of agriculture because of the Wall Street commodities market is in control.

A better method of helping the farmers and ranchers is a direct subsidy to them. Leave Wall Street and the brokers out of the picture, go directly to the source to give these subsidies. The commodities stock market also encompasses food from many other nations besides the american farmers and the wrong people will be getting this help. Buying food from brokers and Wall Street will only have a minimal trickle down affect for the farmers of america.

I'm for helping the american farmers but not the rest of the world too. Congress also needs to change the tax laws on inheriting private farms and ranches so that we can keep what ever farms left intact. Because of excessive inheritance taxes these farms face. Corporate farms aren't burdened with taxes.

How is raising food prices going to help struggling Americans in this economy? The more money we have to pay for a necessity like food, the less money we have to spend on other commodities.
