I hope the only ones to read that distortion of reality are the fans and not the players or coaches.

It was probablly a hope by Andersen that Cougar players and coaches or anyone who could influence them, would read/hear his comments.

The truth is: Andersen will be doing exactly what he did in late November 2008. He did not rush Max. He did not put pressure on Max. What he did do is fill the passing lanes with, apparently, orders to defend these particular lanes and wait for the pass. That is why by the end of the 3rd quarter and BYU within 4 points of the U, BYU had over 200 yards rushing (most given up by the U). Had the Cougs kept rushing and forced the U defense to do something other than wait for the pass, the outcome may have been different and certainly the final score would have been closer.

If Anae and Max can keep their heads about them and run with the ball as many times as they pass it, without the predictability of when, it will be a long night for the Aggies.

If not, the score will be close.
The sad truth | 7:27 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
The good part for USU is BYU is really very good at making teams who are not very good look great, FSU set records vs. us when they almost lose to Jacksonville St and South Florida both average teams, CSU had almost 500 yards of total offense against our "amazing" D. USU should be thrilled to play BYU I am sure they will get over 500 total yards and their QB and running back will set personal and school records, were very charitable in that aspect towards other schools. Will BYU win? Yes, but it will be 45-35 and we might as well have lost because we will let up over 500 yards of total offense, Max Hall will throw 13 interceptions to a terrible defense, Unga will get shot with an arrow in his heal and be out the rest of the year. So we might as well have lost because if this does happen we will drop again in the rankings like we did last week. Good luck Cougs, try not to let us over 30 pts this week.
Hall out Nelson in | 7:33 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
This is not a ripping of Max Hall, so please no comments on that part of it. I think we need MAx Hall out, he is starting to look like Brandon Doman his last few games when he just looked like he lost all confidence and threw interceptions, Max is still a good QB but I think we need to get Nelson in there. I am not saying hes better but this season is shot, I know that will upset die hard Coug fans who love 10-2 seasons at the Las Vegas Bowl vs 5th place Pac-10 teams, but I have a little igher standards than doing that every year. We need to get that kid ready for next year, we play Washington, at FSU, at Utah, at Air Force and at TCU, if we want a chance, we need to get him going now. Thanks Max, you had a good run...

This will be another one sided game with a lot of pre game hype. USU will turn the ball over 3 times before half time and the Y will be up to 21 points. USU will make a late run to make the score look more respectful than the game really was. 44-21 in a game that the Y controled all the way but USU got a moral victory with three late scores in the second half. BYU goes to 4 & 1 USU goes to 1-3.

RE: Hall out Nelson in

This is Max's team and Max's year. I wish all the best for Nelson, but if you want him to be the starter you're hoping for an injury to Hall.
Cougarf@n | 9:46 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
I continue to be amazed by any fan that says Max Hall should be benched. I usually just smile and laugh at stupid jr. high Yewts posing as BYU fans, but I keep seeing this more and more often and it's getting very annoying as it seems more likely that someone might actually confuse one of these fools with a BYU fan. The statements don't deserve a response, but sometimes someone needs to point out an obviously stupid comment so they stop posting it.

Max Hall is an excellent BYU quarterback and we are lucky to have him. Is he perfect? No, but he's doing a great job and I get tired of Yewts pretending they know something about a player they only watch once a year.
Re: Hall out Nelson in | 9:57 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Your "igher" standards are a joke. The season is shot? You're not really a BYU fan so quit pretending, and go frequent some other teams blog.
Hall out | 10:20 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
This is Max's team? His year? Thats sad for him then, the only thing he has claim to fame for is OU, Tulane was a joke, FSU... enough said and CSU he wasnt basically there, it looked like it was his first game... Unga was our offense that game, Proof of that being 3rd and 15 and Bronco runs the ball instead of throwing it BC Hall was a mess and Unga still got us the 1st down VS CSU. Hall has consistently gone on the decline each game.. I have liked what he has done, but lets get a change in there...
Hall/Nelson | 10:39 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
I think Nelson should play in some scheduled packages, but Max is the man for the job. I do think BYU should take USU's plan to heart and realize a good defense is a good offense. Run Unga first and use the pass as an afterthought. Run the clock and make this a short game so we can get some rest before conference weekend.

I think the D-News should do a pole on who is the best player on BYU's offense, Unga or Hall.

I vote for Unga.

Just Wondering? | 10:45 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
I am honestly just wondering, are Cougar fans honestly content with going 10-2 every year to the Las Vegas Bowl? And if so I think it is not so much you are a college football fan but more so loyal to BYU itself and not a die hard fan of the game while having BYU as your team. I think its a case of pride for the school rather than love for the game and the desire to win a BCS title game, I am a BYU fan but I am a die hard college football fan, and 10-2 to the LVBowl will never be appealing to me. We had the chance to be #3 or #4 right now and were not, is the season over? No, but its a disapointment and no one can deny that.
Records | 11:06 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Do you realize that after this game, USU will need to win 5 of its next 8 games to be bowl eligible? 4 are road games, and Idaho looks much improved and FSU is always tough. Then there's BSU at home. BYU only needs two more wins.

Don't hype up games or seasons. It always shoots you in the rear. Same goes for BYU as well.

Higher standard? | 12:17 p.m. Oct. 1, 2009
10 win seasons every year is a higher standard then going undefeated once or twice in history.

If you throw in the towel every year after you lose a game, just to prepare for the possibility of going undefeated in some future season, you will throw away a lot of would-be great seasons (and a lot of conference championships).

Yes, I'll take fighting for the conference championship every year without even giving up the possibility of a BCS run or two every 50 years. Duh!!!!

cosmo555 | 12:31 p.m. Oct. 1, 2009
listen, i got this!!! Brian logan (all 5'6" of him) will completely tear up the aggie defence. same with max hall. and harvey unga. and andrew rich. and mckay jacobson ect...

GETTING THE IDEA!!
Re: Higher Standard? | 1:01 p.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Duh.. your right... 10-2 is great. Thats good that every Coug fan likes that because that is what they will always be... I would rather have good years with a BCS title in the mix than 50 years as the Las Vegas Bowl champs, no one cares about that bowl, its one of the first bowl games. The MWC champion is about as good as the WAC champion... doesnt mean anything... Until we get into the BCS our seasons will always be forgotten. Someone please tell me about last year? No one wants to talk about our amazing game vs average Arizona that we lost, your right, DUH!!! Thats what I want too!!
RE: cosmo555 | 1:39 p.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Just letting you know... Brian Logan plays defense, not offense. He's a CORNERback.
Of Course | 2:25 p.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Every BYU fan wants to go to a BCS bowl, duh. But you don't want the team to tank as soon as that is no longer likely, do you?
I'm shocked | 2:46 p.m. Oct. 1, 2009
I'm baffled at the disrespect BYU's defense is getting. All USU has is a running game. BYU is good at stopping the run. The FSU game is a complete fluke and BYU held OU's running backs in check. They could have a few nice runs, but do you honestly think that will win the game for USU? You're absolutely smoking if you think that?

And no one mentions USU's defense? They're the worst defense in the country and they are going up against BYU! Will BYU's offense even need to convert a third down all night?

The big mouth faggie fans will shut up when Coleby Clawson and Jordan Pendleton take Borel and Turbin out of the game and they lose the rest of the season.
Re: Just Wondering? | 3:32 p.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Any team in the nation would be content with 10 win seasons. Of course, better than that would be even more satisfying, but the Cougar football players already have their sights set on bigger things than even you suggested.

Who cares about just winning a BCS game, when your program has already exceeded that goal with a National title. So BYU tradition is already consistently great football years with a NATIONAL title in the mix over the last 50 years.

If you aren't satisfied with 50 years of the best football outside of the BCS, and a National title in the mix, then you won't be content with anything (except a more equitable BCS). So BYU won't go undefeated this year. Boohoo! Doesn't mean I won't enjoy the possibilities still left for the Cougars this season. I hope you are right that what I will get is a Cougar team with 10 wins, a conference championship, and a Vegas bowl game this year. That will be an amazing accomplishment.

Go ahead and take it for granted when BYU beats TCU, Utah, and all others for another MWC championship. I won't!
Re: Shocked | 3:58 p.m. Oct. 1, 2009
USU has no passing game? Um, Diondre Borel just threw for over 300 yards in two straight games...granted, one was SUU but Texas A&M is 3-0 right now and looking pretty good. We've got more than Borel and Turbin too...Smith and Morrison will surprise the Cougars if they think we're a two man team. Offense has nothing to worry about vs. YBU's defense, it's USU's defense that will be the game maker.
DS | 5:53 p.m. Oct. 1, 2009
To the dude who is talking about not caring about going 10-2 every year. You must not understand how the BCS works. The BCS reevaluates the conferences every 4 years. Last year started a new cycle, and the MWC placed 4th overall in terms of conferences. If the MWC is in the top 6 conferences (on average) for 4 years (1 down, 3 to go), then they will qualify for an automatic BCS bid. That came from Bronco's mouth on 09/24/2009 (I was there). That's how it works. Bronco even went as far as to say to hope TCU and Utah do well so that we have more ranked teams, because that is what a lot of the BCS conference rankings are based on. So, if we play well and keep going 10-2, and so do other MWC teams, we will get that automatic bid over the Big East or ACC. THEN we can talk about National Championship hopes, said Bronco. I agree.
10-Win Seasons... | 6:07 p.m. Oct. 1, 2009
I always find it fascinating that so many would-be fans don't realize that consistently having 10-win seasons means that you are in BCS bowl contention every year. Of course it has been disappointing to have to go to the Vegas Bowl every year, but the best way to get to a BCS Bowl is to continue to win 10 games a year and continue to attract great recruits.

I love how every year is another possible run at a BCS Bowl berth, and BYU will eventually get there when a few of the breaks go their way (e.g. two years ago when BYU was just a few plays from being undefeated; last year when Utah was just three plays away from losing three games).

Give me teams that are capable of 10 wins every season! Eventually we'll break through!

I am behind BYU 100%. Love Max Hall. He is one of the elite in my opinion. An exceptional exceptional quarterback. He made OU, and at times, FSU's defense look utterly rediculous out there. Who can forget him dismanteling Oregon a couple years ago and on and on.

I hope BYU is ready to get in there and rip the arms off TCU. That is the game circled on the calendar. They are the team to beat in the conference, and I guarentee, that will be THE game of the season. Go cougars!

To Anonymous | 8:03 p.m. Oct. 1, 2009
BYU has only played Oregon recently 1 time and it was in the Las Vegas Bowl. Max Hall did not beat Oregon in the Las Vegas Bowl. That was John Beck. Max Hall has played in 2 Las Vegas Bowls, a win against UCLA and a loss against Arizona, Max played poorly in both games. Max is killing us this season with his interceptions, fact of the matter is Brandon Doman needs to be coaching him better. I like Max and I think he is a good quarterback and by far our best option, but seriously he is not Elite and BYU needs to realize that and run to Harvey more and also create better pass packages for Max to throw out of. With our offesive weapons, we should be scoring 50 every game.
Interception issues | 8:54 p.m. Oct. 1, 2009
I am all for running Harvey and Tonga a lot in the USU game. Max is good, but he can sure have some bad streaks, 3 and outs and turnovers will keep things close for sure.
I'm worried sick | 9:05 p.m. Oct. 1, 2009
I'm really worried about this game. Don't be surprised to see another L in the win loss column. I think BYU is underestimating their opponent for tomorrow night. Not sure why Hall is talking like he's a pro. He's completed more passes to the other colored jersey's than Td's thrown. Anae still hasn't taught him how to read a defense!!
10 Win Season | 9:15 p.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Boise State would not be content with a ten win season! I'm really not sure why in the world BYU is so content. I guess they don't want to see the BCS destroy them in a bowl game.
Fear??? | 11:07 a.m. Oct. 2, 2009
If anything, BYU players are overestimating USU. The quotes I've read laud USU's threats as bigger than they are. If USU wanted to catch them by surprise, they should have done it last year. I for one would be very surprised if BYU loses.

As a FAN I don't mind underestimating an opponent. What a fan thinks has no bearing on the outcome, anyway. And USU hasn't put a scare in me for years. Until USU has a real chance in the fourth quarter, I'm not going to get worried about any game against the Aggies.

But it is exciting just to be at the stadium watching my Cougars. And it will be extra fun with an in-state team, because I'm sure many Aggie fans will be there. Cheer loud, and proud, and come on time Aggie fans, because this one will be over early.

No disrespect, because I do think USU will be a team to worry about in the future, but this year they are still one of the last teams worthy of fear on BYU's schedule.
Digbads | 11:57 a.m. Oct. 2, 2009
There are some real knuckleheads who post on here. I'm excited to have a team where the "norm" is to win 10 games and go to a bowl game. How easy you forget how bad things were in the 90's and then with Crowton.
These idiotic comments about "true BYU fans can only be satisfied with a BCS championship" make me want to puke.

Re: Just Wondering

You are absolutely right! I as a BYU fan am so ashamed of my team that I will mimic all of those other fair-weather fan and switch over to the Utes ... oops, they're not having a great year this year, either.

Oh, wait, no, I'll be loyal to the MWC and switch my allegiance to TCU. That's it! I am now a TCU fan.

Oh wait! I live in Indiana. Maybe I'll become a IU fan. Nah, they're not doing so well. Maybe I'll be a Notre Dame fan. But then again, I don't like Charlie Weis.

I am SO confused! I don't know who to cheer for. But I've got to say that I am so very grateful to you for pointing out that I should not be a BYU fan.
