He narrowed his choices to five schools and utah wasn't one of them? How far has the Utah basketball program fell? Smiles in provo. Weeping in Salt Lake. . .like it should be.
Bottom Line | 7:36 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
The style of play fits his play....just kidding. The real bottom line is BYU is going to be extremely long. Utah Valley seems to have a mecca of budding talent with Haws and Davies and this Collingsworth kid. BYU will make at least one sweet 16 run in the next 4 years.
UteFan | 7:45 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
if he played football he would have gone to the Mighty Utes.

re: bottom line: | 7:59 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
I'll believe the sweet 16 run when I see it. I'd be happy just to win one game in the NCAA tourney. BYU is an embarassment adn joke on the big stage!
Anonymous | 8:10 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
this is the best overall talent byu has gotten..... EVER.... anyone who really knows the game knows this kid is the real deal... luckily for byu Kansas backed off
Congrats Kyle!! | 8:41 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
The Utah hangers-on in this thread help to underline how talented this kid is and what his commitment means to BYU.
Re: Utefan | 8:42 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
Well utefan, this isn't football. Great job in nabbing this one cougs.
High school coaches | 9:13 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
In talking with local high school coaches about this kid that have been around for awhile they say that he and Haws are the two best players to ever come from Utah Valley.
No Surprise | 9:39 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
Was it ever really in doubt?
Utah fan | 9:39 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
BYU landed a stud period.. This kid is a flat out a play maker.. The future looks bright for Byu and Kyle Collinsworth!
Nice | 10:10 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
Well I guess we'll see what Kyle can really do in 2012.
Dave | 10:13 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
With that long list of Zoobs to make it big in the NBA its no wonder why he chose to play for BYU!!
good job | 10:13 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
I am sure he is a great player and BYU should be happy to get such talent. My question is why do such great players go to BYU instead of challenging themselves in some of the better leagues. Does BYU basketball ever produce NBA picks? It just seems strange these Utah County kids stay there to play for an average-above average national program instead of competing on a national stage.
re: Young High School Coaches | 10:15 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
Perhaps the reason the local high school coaches told you that Collinsworth and Haws were the two best to ever come from Utah Valley is because they never saw Devin Durrant play. After their college careers, I'd be willing to bet you could combine the accolades they receive and will still fall short of what Devin accomplished. It's always fun to make these hypothetical assertions, but yours would carry more weight if either of them are selected in the top 24 in the NBA draft, become a 2 time All-Conference first team selection, are a collegiate All-American, or set BYU's single season scoring record. If Haws and Collinsworth are the 2 best players to come out of Utah Valley, would they be considered failures if their accomplishments fall short of Devin's?
To good job | 10:29 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
NBA picks? yes several of them...

T Hansen
R Araujo
T Plaisted

those are just in the last few years.

So yes they produce NBA picks.

Ernest T. Bass | 10:36 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
byu hasn't won an NCAA tournament game in his lifetime.
Utah has won nearly 20 NCAA tournament games in his lifetime.
Big mistake.
re: To good job | 10:37 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
You're really going to list those guys as success stories?
Really?
Araujo is on everyone's list as one of the biggest NBA draft busts in history.
The other two guys had even less impact.
HAHA, I guess you're desperate.
Re:re: To good job | 11:31 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
Draft busts... Wouldn't that list have to include Keith Van Horn and Andrew Bogut. A 3 and 1 pick with underwhelming careers, and Danny Vranes, who did basically nothing?

Danny Ainge, The same age as Vranes, was a second rounder and an All-Star with championships as a player and a coach.
Ainge | 11:35 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
Player and GM. Pardon me.

As for talent, Ainge, Roberts, Kite and Durrant played together and all played in the NBA.

ANdre Miller has a nice career in the NBA, and Doleac is a nice guy being paid well to ride the pine. (Is he still in the league?)
@Ernest T. | 11:38 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
Ernie,
Hang on to your hat. B.Y.U. has recruited well enough the last couple of years that I would say a win in the NCAA Tournament is on the horizon.
Not quick | 11:45 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
Collinsworth has work to do to be great in the college game. Not only did he not handle playing quicker more athletic players at the NBA camp, his jumper is atrocious. He's got some work to do. High school is a lot different than the college game. Too bad he and haws will virtually play one year together. But BYU has put together great recruiting class after great recruiting class. Congrats to Rose and that staff.

And btw, Jackson emery's freshman brother down at lone peak could explode this year. Getcha popcorn ready. And go Cougzzz
Re: To good job | 11:50 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009
At least Van Horn and Bogut started and played in the NBA. Maybe their teams have not been great, but still much better then your list.
And . . . . . . . . . | 12:10 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
This has to be one of the least surprising stories of the year.

Was there ever any doubt on this one?

Just another big, slow (when compared to the athletes on other top 50 teams) white kid from Utah going to play the big, slow, white kid from Utah game that the Cougars specialize in.

When is BYU going to quit trying the monopolize the marginal talent coming out of Utah County and start recruiting real talent so they can get out of the 1st round of the NCAA tournament for once.
2 cents  | 12:21 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Always good on paper, Kyle, tyler and brandon are good gets. Utah misses on them and big time with Washingtons CJ Wilcox. Here's the true knocks that will be fun to see. Kyle - no outside game, make him catch and shoot, defense ok, but he's not going to get to the rim as often, same with tyler. tyler's going to struggle defensively. Will also find it hard to penetrate, mid range is good, both kyle and tyler's long ball is hurting. Brandon, lets see if he work on the court and in the classroom. Rock, Paper, sizzors. Devin D, Danny Ainge, Roberts, Kite are the ones who set the bar. But these guys will be good their sr years, no doubt about it. They know how to win and Not Quick, Jackson has alot to learn about good shots vs. bad shots and good takes, bad takes, just sayin . . .
2011,2012,2013 | 1:20 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
the next big names in the utah high school basketball
sweepstakes are
class of 2011 corbin miller (brighton) and tyrell corbin(west)
class of 2012 jordan loveridge (west jordan)
class of 2013 nick emery (lone peak) and brandon miller (brighton) how many will byu get?
Congratulations BYU | 1:30 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Everyone knew Collinsworth would choose BYU. I'm happy for Coach Rose, this is a great addition to a pretty good program.

I'm not sure why people on this thread want to compare the successes of the BYU and Utah programs. Although Utah has been down recently, comparing tournament wins and players in the NBA favors the Utes.

FYI to the Cougar fan knocking Bogut and Van Horn. Keith Van Horn averaged 16 pts. and 7 rebounds throughout his nine year career. Andrew Bogut is averaging 12 pts. and 9 rebounds, while improving each year.

Great recruiting Coach Rose!

Go UTES!!
DEAR ErnestTBass | 1:44 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Apparently you have never heard of Danny Ainge playing against Notre Dame in the last 8 seconds to drive the entire length of the floor and score and put them in the final 8. Yes, their record is atrocious since then, but people like you make such stupid comments that it is easy to blast you out of the water.
You mean the 16 year old FR? | 2:01 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Word is Emery is a freshman, but older than most soph's. He should blow up and start for Lone Peak. He is as old as the juniors out there.

What is everyone's thoughts on holding your kid back 2 grades, little own one?
radar | 2:07 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
What's with all the haters from the U, it's not like you guys even recruit Utah anymore in football or bball, This guy is going to be a stud and BYU is definitely going on the rise whereas U bball is on a down, you lost your big man that won you games.
Ute Fan | 2:14 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Collinsworth is a GAMER! That's a great get for you COUGS.
I've Noticed | 3:21 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Brigham Young is really owning the state of Utah in both sports recruiting wise the last couple of years. Even Utah State has seemed to surpass Utah at in-state recruiting recently. What happened to that program for it to fall off so rapidly? Were they really just Rick Majerus and nothing else?
Anonymous | 4:30 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
In Defence of Ernest T. Bass

He said "in his lifetime".

Ainge driving the floor occurred in 1980. I am 50 and it happened when I was on my mission. That would place the last BYU tournament win at least 10 years before young Master Collingsworth was born.

1:44, all you did was prove Ernest's point. We would all do with a little more thinking and less reacting.

On the other hand, congratulations to BYU for a good recruit!
re; You mean the 16 year old FR? | 5:29 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
why not hold your kid back or start him late if it helps him get a full ride at a good school and besides the rest of the country is doing it i call it the texas red shirt, most all the elite players across the country are older than our kids in utah
DennyG | 6:28 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Utah didn't want him.
For obvious reasons.
Re: Re: High school coaches | 7:23 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
One of them played against Devin Durrant in high school and the other was an assistant coach at Orem at the same time he was playing, so... there you go.
Ernest T. Bass | 7:31 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Ok, so ONE guy THIRTY years ago made an impact in the NBA.
Wow, you guys are a real power, a veritable NBA prep school.
1 guy, 30 years ago.
Really?
Richard | 7:50 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
BYU's last NCAA tournament win was in 1993. 15 1/2 years ago. Still a long time ago. Not as long as 1981 when Danny Ainge played. They have wins in 1984, 1988, 1991 and 1993. Still, Utah has many more wins in that time frame. However, the current state of the Basketball program is better at BYU than at Utah.
DennyG | 8:01 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
What are those "obvious" reasons that Utah didn't want him? Because they want to lose? Winning isn't important to them? Come on? If he had shown interest in Utah they would have loved to have him. Get a clue!
re;You mean the 16 year old FR? | 8:08 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Emery just turned 15 a few weeks ago. So he is one of the older freshman, but was not held back.
Go cougs | 8:23 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Nice land i was excited to hear this on sports talk on my way to work!
UteFan | 8:33 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
I might have to switch my basketball allegiance to BYU. I'm a bandwagoner like all coug fans so why not? Collinsworth is a good kid a hec of a pick up dont you think Laverl? Dont listen to all the Ute haters Kyle, have a great career at the Y.
re: Ernest T. Bass  | 8:35 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Which is one more player that made an impact in the NBA than Utah.
Really!
CougarF@n | 8:44 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Congratulations Kyle. Welcome to cougar nation and I'm confident you will not regret your decision. It's good to have you on board.

Just ignore the Ute fans who seem to think it's better to have not gone to the dance over the last four years than to go and lose in the first round. Nevermind that they lost their first round game last year against a much lower seed than BYU has ever played in its string of losses. Losing to a much lower seed is just embarrassing, but fortunately Utah won't have to worry about it this year when they're playing in the NIT.

GO COUGARS!
School | 8:49 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Nice job Coach Rose in recruiting and I am happy to hear about your health improving. Now go out and coach a win in the NCAA tournament. The offense always looks good early with the fast break and then loses steam as teams go to half court set and start grinding it out inside.

Please stop comparing BYU basketball history to Utah there is no comparision Utah has a much better history both in NBA tallent an past NCAA victories.

I do agree that BYU has a better basketball program today and has for the last few years and looks to have a better future at the present time.

Read 'em and | 8:50 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
weep little uties. Cougs on the rise.
Collinsworth Slow? | 8:55 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Our son played on the Utah Pump N Run. Collinsworth is anything but slow. He played against the best players in the country and dominated against all of them. He shut them down on defense and scored at will on offense. Utah didn't want him? They were at every game this summer watching along with dozens of other coaches. Now the real kicker -- Collinsworth played all summer with a broken bone in his back. Word is that it hurt the worst during the NBA camp which limited his movement. His paretents said Doctor's misdiagnosed it in the spring and found it in August. The kid is tought. He also can shoot -- he just doesn't have to do it because he can get to the basket at will. He is probably going to BYU because he wants to help them be better and reach heights that they haven't been at in a while. He also wants to serve a mission. What could be better than playing at a top notch place in front of family and friends
plyxply | 8:57 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
don't forget about TJ Haws, he's every bit as good as his brother was at that age, he'll be an 8th grader this year. I'm sure byu has him in the bag, a chance to play with his older brother at the Y is a pretty good tool to have to get him.
a huge Y win! | 9:06 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Congrats Cougars!!! It's great to see the basketball program competing for recruits with the big boys. Kyle welcome to the Y! Can't wait to see your work on the court. Let's just keep those consecutives championships coming!
RE: LOOTIES | 9:11 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009

Love the color green | 9:12 a.m. Oct. 1, 2009
Keep it coming U fans! Every knock you dish out on the Y shows you're not really red but ENVY GREEN!!!!

Congrats to the coaching staff! Kyle welcome to the Y where fans love their team because they love the school, not because they hate someone else!
