It is too bad that so many have no regard for the sanctity of human life. Our population is beginning to decline. I am ok with helping young mothers have their babies and help them find suitable parents for the child. Maybe a financial incentive to the young mother will have to be necessary.

Abortion is legal. The argument seems to be why should people who believe abortion is murder pay for abortions. People who believe capital punishment are forced to pay for deaths. Americans who see wars as murder still pay. Why can one group get special treatment by our government in a democracy?

re: Anonymous

Personally, I think it has more to do with personal irresponsibility than for the betterment of society. Abortion is an irresponsibility issue, for the most part.

Re: anonymous @ 3:27 - Special treatment as you say is available to any group of people who actually vote. It's called democracy; the majority opinion wins.

I'm considered a liberal here in the States (I'm a native born German) but I agree with Senator Hatch. I'm strongly in favor of universal health care because a healthy populace is beneficial to the entire society. I'm also against most abortions because I believe it is taking a life. I don't want the government to fund abortions but instead advocate adoption or better still prevention of unwanted pregnancy. Of course I agree that medical reasons exist in some cases for abortion and I'd gladly see an exception for these situations.

By the way, I'm also a staunch opponent of capital punishment for the same reasons I oppose abortion. I'm also a pacifist who believes war should be the VERY LAST option only when all other efforts to avoid it have been made.

RE: Anonymous | 3:27 p.m

Abortion is a personal medical procedure, therefore should be personallly paid for,

Captial punishment is a punishment decreed by the courts, and is therefore public,

Miltary support is IN the constitution, article section 8, and therefore public,

IT is NOT about special treatment,

it is the government's job to carry punishments given by the court,

it is the government's job to support the military, when congress has voted for a military action,

it is NOT the governmnt's job, duty or power, to pay for YOUR personal medical procedures.

What was the language?

Makes me wonder what the language was that Hatch was trying to get introduced into the statute part of the bill. It would be nice if Des News could include the complete story instead of a reiteration of Hatch's version of the events.

There are already several statutes on the books that prohibit federal monies from paying for abortion procedures.

Additionally, there are already protections in place for health care providers to refuse providing abortion services. Even pharmacists can legally refuse to supply birth control based on moral belief.

Sounds like Hatch is just trying to pander to his conservative base to score points for election year...but what else is new?

@ re: anonymous...if you think abortion is only an irresponsibility issue you are up in the night. What about those who need the procedure to save their own life or who are pregnant because of rape or incest? Your hasty generalization exposes your hate and uneducated opinion.

While irresponsibility does contribute to abortion rates, it is by no means the only circumstance under which a woman might seek abortion services.

Put abortion "rights" on the ballot and see what americans think of this "right."

Um, Jemmy, Sen. Hatch is NOT in favor of universal health care.

An Observer

MANY MANY MANY things are legal,

but government isn't paying for them so you can do them.

Speech is legal but goverment is not paying for my cable tv or books,

Guns are legal, but government isn't buying me any guns.

Church is legal, but government is not paying me gas money to go to church,

and I COULD go on ad infinitem,

So WHY should I pay for someone else's abortion, or as someone else has stated, MEDICAL Prcoedures.

Thank you, Thank you, Mr Hatch.

You have saved my 401k plan and the banks which most investments are in the insurance policy. It is good to see you have protected your investments too, because profits are absolutely important.

Who cares about others, and their medical needs.

The old are protected by medicare paid by the government and that is enough of a burden.

Why not continue Mr Hatch and get rid of Medicare, privatize it and make money from them? Its not fair that they take our money.

The money would go back to our investments.

Lets get those in prison to work and pay for their healthcare too so we can profit from them!

Rising costs help our profits!

People should have their religious leaders pay for their healthcare anyway.

Sincerely,

Healthcare Insurance Protection Reps.

Outstanding argument Anon

Anonymous 3:27pm. The best argument I've heard.

To: " What was the Language"

Dear " What was the language". The educated know that 20 million abortions aren't the result of rape and incest. Your argument is a weak counterpoint to
Anonymous because you place it on the same plane as the abortions due to irresponsibility. The stats have incest and rape way in the minority. Anonymous is correct, in my view.

Even though it is already

illegal to pay for abortions with federal dollars, it should be in every bill. Those looking at one bill may not be looking at the others. We can hardly get the law makers to read the document they vote on how can we expect them to be reading the old ones?

Doug G

Ok, abortions should be paid for privately. Finally, the stumbling block is out of the way. Now, let's get the single payer health care reform done.

How Can This Be?

Hatch should solicit the help of fellow Mormon and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Certainly they must be on the same side of this insidious issue.

Show Pony?

Is this a manufactured issue for Hatch to claim more of the spotlight he so craves?

A mother who wants options

I am pro choice it is my choice and my body yes every life is sacred. But if you are in a position where abortion is necessary I believe you have the right to make that Choice. IF it is medically necessary to have one and the medical option is not available to the mother what then? And even if it is a responsibility issue and not medically necessary we are still going to pay if the mother or family unit can not afford the child in the form of Medicaid, TANIF,WIC,Daycare, public education there list go's on. And that is only if the mother keeps the child if they give up there child there is still the cost of foster care. And what about the risk of child abuse.I have seen what happens when a the parent does not what a child. So you can not tell me you wont pay for the child if you pay taxes you are paying for the child.

I still have yet to see anyone address the underlying, fundamental issues and moral conflicts that arise out of the abortion issue. It is easy for many to just say no abortions, but life is just not that simple. This complexity was even recognized by Sen. Hatch who several years ago was part of an effort to come to a conclusion on when life began, and of course there were no definitive answers. Even the Church allows some ambiguity in addressing the issue. I find abortion distasteful, but I also allow that there are situations when it may be best. It boils down to a deeply personal decision, one that the woman involved necessarily has to make, hopefully influenced by good principles and supportive advisors, not by the government. Conservatives who decry government involvement in their lives should recognize this dilemma and be consistent in their views.

I always wonnder if it is Hatch talking or the lobbiest money? I saw last night the money spent by lobbiest factions for the votes of the so called blue democrats, the leader got over 7.2 million dollars! Of course that does not influence anyone! HAH-HAH
(the lobbiests were working for the health care industry)

Mike

Hatch knows that other federal laws would prohibit federal funding for abortions. This is just a part of the overarching republican strategy to kill meaningful health care reform. Any old stick in the wheel will do. What an idealog. Whatever happened to considering the needs of the people over those of corporations. By the way does anyone know how much campaign money Hatch has taken from United Health Care and the like?
