Poll have big problems. The Utes should be ranked in the top 10 right now and are not showing up. Even the cougs show up. whats next USU? get it right and put Utah in the top 10 where they belong. Take the cougs out until they strengthen their weak schedule to match Utah's
I'm not particularly a fan of any Utah school, but Ute Fan who posted above is delusional. And in his opinion, which team in the top 15 is taking the place of his beloved Utes? And the duo of Oregon and Louisville is better than the duo of Oklahoma and Florida State? Please!!
Not so fast Bart, FSU lost to a Big Sky Level team and you think they are good. Utah lost to Oregon, barely, then Oregan kicked Cal who was #6 all over the field. I'd say Utah and BYU should be in the top 15, but no better for either one.
One thing to look at, Football just like basketball is becoming a game where matchups change the game. BYU isn't a good matchup of FSU because of their lack of speed. Utah is a better matchup for most teams in the country because they have speed. BYU gets it's rankings because most people think Lavell is still coaching.
Don't forget the Houston Cougars. They are undefeated and are playing good football too.
Here you go again touting Utah's stronger schedule when compared to BYU's. Put some facts behind your words!
U will play the other 8 MWC teams, just like BYU.
U play USU just like BYU.
U beat Louisville, BYU beat Oklahoma.
U beat SJSU, BYU beat Tulane.
U lost to Oregon, BYU lost to FSU.
In the end BYU's higher ranking comes down to beating the then No. 3 Oklahoma while U lost the then unranked Ducks (who lost to BSU).
FSU was ranked in the top 20 when they came in and wiped out the Cougars.
I think BYU's ranking is fair, and if U continue to win, perhaps U can join BYU and TCU in the top 20 again, giving the BCS and BSU and run for a big bowl.
Don't take the bait from Utefan - that is a poor effort. At least make him work at getting you all riled up.
BYU is the problem. If they wouldn't have WON a national Championship, the BCS wouldn't have had to be formed to keep them from winning it again. Of course BYU winning the National Championship has allowed lesser teams like Utah and Boise State to share some of the spotlight. Those teams would obviously not have been picked to play for something as significant as a National Championship. They were granted an opportunity to play in the 3rd or 4th best bowl game and actually looked good doing so. I am so proud of them for stepping up.
My mudder used to sweetly say, "If wishes were fishes, we'd all have a fry!" Seven zillion opinions about American football. United States.....what a great country where everybody can be right! (But Utah in Top 10, right now?, today? Some are part of that there Crazy Bunch Club!)
Sorry, I am out of alignment with the vast majority of fans, but....I see no need for playoffs, or of a national champion. The sport is for entertainment' sake. The games, rankings regardless, are entertaining when competitive. The rivalries established over the years bring flavor to the games. Yeah, every sport has a champion, and the quest to be the best is every player/team's goal, and it is unAmerican not to have a big game and champion to crow about for a year.
Or, is it? Are these students playing competitive athletic games and adding to the school's fun and active spirit? Or are they athletes looking for a brief and rare shot at a lucrative career? Is college football just a funnel and showcase towards the pro game and a means to exploit their play for the geezers and entrepreneurs?
My 'naiive' point - enough pressure already. Playoffs are mostly for $$$-interests and fans. Retain rivalries, retain conference championships goals with fewer bowls as rewards, keep $$$ out as it only corrupts. With an undisputed champion, what does that leave us to argue or write about all year? Keep the games as entertainment, free from moneyed interests.
BYU demonstrates it can defend against the spread and running QBs it will not be an elite team. It is not a lack of speed as much as it is a lack of penetration by the line and sporadic linebacker play that enhances the problems in the defensive backfield.
More speed would help but there are problems up front with not getting enough pressure on apposing QBs.
The D is erratic.
As far as Utah is concerned "UTEFAN" is not delusional he is facetious. Utah has a halo effect from last year. Ditto for BSU for the last 3 years. Neither have played much of anyone.
But they have proven (in the past) that they can rise to the big game. BYU has a long history of choking and that hurts them.
You are quite full of yourself, aren't u?
BYU wasn't a good matchup for FSU because BYU was overconfident and the defense played too relaxed, not due to "superior speed". So Oklahoma didn't have too much speed but somehow FSU did? And what about the speedy Tulane WR's that were going to burn BYU deep?
FSU wanted that game. They were hungry and had an opportunity to beat a team ranked in the top 10 to get back into the rankings in a big way. Then they rested on their laurels the following week thinking South Florida at home would be easy. BYU did the same thing and thought FSU wouldn't be a difficult game.
And with all of utah's "speed" please explain how BYU has beaten them 2 of the last 3 times.
And you say FSU lost to a Big Sky level team? South Florida is in the Big East and if you bother to check their record for the past few years they've won 8, 9, and 9 games including 2 bowl wins and regular season wins over some pretty good teams.
This is what I am seeing about this stupid polls - Answer, Voters want to put those non bcs kids at the top of the poll (almost) and make us look silly - we are so close to the top and then WHAM we lost and drop out of the poll (or close). Those voters want to see us go nuts by going high and drop out! Get rid of this stupid polls. Each Conf Champ will play in the MEGA JANUARY MADNESS! Got a Love it BABY!
I agree with your troll comment.
I don't agree with your comment about BYU being the problem by winning a NC. That has actually helped.
If BYU hadn't won that NC and the BCS hadn't been created then guess how much of a chance utah or BSU or Hawaii would have had to play in a big money bowl? ZERO! ZILCH! NADA!!!
Now, do you understand why they wouldn't have been given a chance to play in the big money bowls? It's because of conference tie-in's to those bowls! That's why BYU's A.D. wasn't able to get a highly ranked team to play them in 1984. Those teams were committed to their big money bowls and either couldn't or didn't want to get out of those committments. They wanted the big money.
So because BYU is allegedley the reason for the BCS and because of the resulting anti-trust outcry forcing the BCS to loosen up the requirements, non-BCS schools now have an opportunity to get into a big money BCS bowl that they never had previously.
Thank you BYU!
It's too early to believe any polls. Good point about the Mulligan for OU.
If we're to keep the current BCS system we have to do away with pre-season rankings. By waiting until week 4 before any official rankings are made is the only "fair" way to give non-BCS teams a chance at a national title. Starting out at number one because of what your team did last year makes about as much sense as teats on a bull.
I anm not sure how berating or belittling BYU or Utah
helps either BYU or Utah.
BOth have gotten the raw end from the BCS.
BYU will not be ranked by the end of October! You can take that to the bank...WATCH & SEE!
BCS is in the business of matching up top teams from the BCS conferences for compelling Bowl matchups. It is not about crowning a true national champion. Never was. They never had, and never will, have any designs on including any current non-BCS conferences in the BCS.
(Besides, in their mind, they already do include the non-BCS. They call them non-automatic qualifiers)
There are not enough TV sets and consumers in the MWC/WAC for the BCS to be concerned about missing out on them. Additionally, they know from research/experience that the average MWC/WAC fan WILL watch the BCS matchups. Conversely, they know the average BCS fan WILL NOT watch a WAC/MWC matchup.
Due diligence from the financial/marketing folks at the BCS will always lead them to exclude the MWC/WAC teams in favor of teams from more attractive markets.
Quit complaining about not being in the BCS. The BCS learned about diminishing returns from watching the WAC16 debacle and is not likely to ever repeat that error by including more auto-qualifying conferences in the BCS system.
Those that have the money/power make the rules, and its not you.
FYI, Boise state does not, and never has been, a spread offense team. It does on a few plays employ spread formations, but that is the exception, not the rule.
Boise state uses pro-style formations and shifts to create an advantage.
