Brad Rock: NCAA adds 'Riley Nelson Rule' to books

If I'm understanding correctly, someone who signs a Letter of Intent and goes on a mission before any college can still be contacted. Anyone else come to that conclusion? If that is the case, it seems like a loophole that could cause problems in the future.
moose on the loose | 8:36 p.m. Sept. 29, 2009
Oh ya big problem when a young man signs with BYU while on a mission but, when Ben Olsen left and went to UCLA it was no big deal at all. Sounds like sour grapes to me. . .
Brad Rock late to the party | 8:53 p.m. Sept. 29, 2009
This was the Ben Olson Rule LONG before it was the Riley Nelson Rule. It just so happens the timing of the ruling lines up with current events in Utah. Also, BYU has WAY more to benefit from this rule than other schools. Now the Utes, and PAC-10 teams will have to win the recruiting war before they get to BYU. As the Rock Monster correctly points out BYU has enough people in the "field" doing their recruiting for them so this rule is less impactful from that standpoint.

There was plenty of crying when Olsen left. Pay attention.
Re moose | 9:04 p.m. Sept. 29, 2009
You have a short memory. We went nuts over Olson as a fan base. It was embarrassing!
Fact Checker | 9:27 p.m. Sept. 29, 2009

One small problem with calling it the "Riley Nelson Rule."
Riley Nelson was not on scholarship at Utah State, and never signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) with the Aggies.
He was basically a walk-on.
He did have an academic scholarship (as a 4.0 student).
So, he technically would not have been considered a "scholarship athlete" in regards to this rule.
Doon | 10:46 p.m. Sept. 29, 2009
One difference... we were all over Olson for the transfer... not UCLA. USU fans blame BYU first and Riley second.
Clueless | 12:30 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
"BYU has enough people in the "field" doing their recruiting for them so this rule is less impactful from that standpoint."

Give me just one example of a mission president, bishop, or other representative of the church recruiting a missionary in the mission field.

The fact is, BYU haters assume this is the case anytime a player decides to transfer to BYU.

BYU is very strict about having anyone outside the athletic department involved in recruiting. In fact, just last week at the Cougar Club Luncheon, BYU STRONGLY reminded BYU boosters that if they knew of an athlete who might be a good prospect for BYU, the booster should contact the BYU Athletic Department and not do ANY recruiting or have any discussion at all with the athlete about attending BYU--this goes for high school players, college players AND players serving missions.

The haters will believe whatever they want, but that doesn't prove anything.

WA AGGIE | 1:05 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
Truth is, that the golden boy-church program (BYU) Made a huge ethical mistake here. I get so tired of hearing Bronco preach honor, honesty, and integrity and then he pulls a stunt like this. BYU can spin it anyway they want. Bottom line is that what they did was dirty and wrong. It just goes to to show that all schools, BYU included, will do anything to get ahead. Don't kid yourself BYU by thinking that you hold yourselves to a higher ethical standard.
RE: all you whiners | 5:43 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
is riley nelson ever going to see significant time anyway so who really cares?
kw | 6:39 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
I personally didnt go to BYU before my mission but as I was out I would talk to other missionaries that were going to go to BYU when they finished their missions. The church can become very important to a boys life while on a mission. Even more than before he went. Therefore I don't see anything strange about Riley wanted to go to a CHURCH school. Since he served in a foreign lanquage speaking mission he can get a semester of credit for his language skills learned on his mission at BYU. The idea that he wants to associate with kids that are members of his church at a church sponsored school seems normal. Yes other schools have LDS kids there too, but give the kid a break. Riley wanted to go to BYU. He just recently said that himself. Kids his age change their minds about alot of things. I changed schools when I was in college, and I wasnt even an athlete. Quit blaming Bronco.

Do you need a tissue buddy?
Wahhh Aggie | 7:02 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
State specifically what BYU did wrong and include evidence. Are you saying they should have told Nelson, "Sorry, you can't come here" when he asked? They didn't recruit him, they accepted him when he informed them he was coming.
bottom line is | 7:02 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
that Utah is the only relevant program in the state. And no one there cares.
re: WA | 7:05 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa is right. Do you Aggies ever stop complaining? waaaa, BYU stole our colors. waaaa, BYU won't play us in bball. waaa, BYU steals our recruits. Get a clue! This guy just wanted to go to a QB school. He made the decision. He wanted to do it! Would you honestly want to play for a school that was known as one of the top 10 worst teams year after year? Give the guy a break and don't always be hating on BYU. I guess that will never change because they preach BYU hate in Logan. To be filled with hate over sports is a wasted life if you ask me. People like WA aggie chose to live that way. I feel bad for the person.
You Are Clueless | 7:06 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
I've lived outside of Utah for most of my life. Here in Arizona, there are more ASU fans and U of A fans than BYU fans. Many local church leaders and members HATE BYU and want to see them lose every time they play. it's the same in other parts of the country.

Many times, the local fans are trying to convert the missionaries to the local university, NOT to BYU. If you ask around, you will find that BYU athletes serving missions are often contacted by local members and informed that they should transfer from BYU to a better school.

Those of you who think the leaders and members of the Church are all recruiters for BYU are simply ignorant of the real world.
MTC | 7:07 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
So does this mean that byu will keep their coaches out of the MTC? Ask Tai Wesley how his "visit" from the byu coaches in the MTC went.
Re: WA Aggie | 7:12 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
You act like you know all the facts, please explain how you know "what really" happened so all of us without the connections inside college football can get the truth. Sorry to be sacastic but your comment makes it sound as though you know exactly what went on and how it all went down. Bradley signed a LOI with Louisville and while on his mission he reconsidered BYU and called them. Ben Olson did the same and went to UCLA. If you know anything about young men they change there mind quite a bit, with that being the case why are people so bent on blaming BYU for that?
Rick  | 7:26 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
WA Aggie should be Waaaah Aggie. C'mon, blame Riley if you want to, not BYU. Bronco did nothing. If Riley contacted any school on his own and asked if he could play, what's a coach to do? There's no shame in answering the young man's question and saying, "yes, if you decide to come, that's fine with us."

Don't let your sour grapes color your thinking on this. BYU did nothing wrong.

That said, I like this new legislation because I hope young men will focus more on their missions and have less football distractions---from ANY school.
Dr. J | 7:30 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
No one plays the game with more integity than BYU. Whine all you want Ags, your boy just didn't want to be in Logan--who could blame him. Funny thing is, he probably will just be a place holder until Lark, Munns, or Heaps is ready to go.

Why Riley Left. | 7:46 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
I am a die hard Aggie fan, hate BYU and really I could care less that Riley went to BYU. I actually even KNOW that it was not BYU that "recruited" him. I have posted about this before. Riley's dad's clinic Alpine Ortho got the team doctor duties yanked by USU, this made Dr. Nelson beyond livid and embarrassed. What better way to get retribution than to suggest your son go play QB for what is quite frankly a much better football school.

BYU certainly does have a double standard in most cases. The Lavell era is ladened with athletes who were given exception after exception on honor code rules, unless of course they were riding the pine.

BYU athletes routinely underhand their mission experience by spending two years "working out." Every missionary knew one. We had an Elder who played at the Y, and his companions all hated it (well most) because playing football was his focus, not serving a mission.

However in this particular case Riley or BYU did not perform any impropriety and really who cares about Riley. Borel serves our system well. Riley is good but will probably not play much for y.

Anonymous | 7:47 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
hey kw. Ever been to USU. 80% of the students are members as are a lot of the faculty. You think they have to go to BYU to associate with LDS kids. My experiences tell me it is sometimes easier to live the gospel at a place like USU where people choose to do so than it is at BYU where it is legislated that you do so.

re: fact checker | 7:55 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
I don't know if Riley was on academic scholarship or not but he did sign a National Letter of Intent. I was there and saw it.
Re:Wahhh Aggie | 7:55 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
You can't be serious. You are the exact reason that people are so upset. Where in the story does it say that Riley ASKED to go to BYU with no contact? That has never, ever been a story put out to the media. Sure, he may have wanted to go, but he was contacted and told that BYU was interested in him. He wasn't writing letters to Samuelson every day begging him to let him into the school. He was asked to come to school there, not the other way around.
Jimbo Fischer | 7:57 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
This rule change was sponsored by the WAC. Mr. Rock chose to ignore the fact that a week after Riley a running back from UNLV was also poached by BYU. If these kids were not being recruited by BYU then how were they ever offered scholarships? Isn't that what recruiting is? If Bronco were true to his faith he would tell these kids to go serve their missions and then worry about things when you get home. Bronco talks a great game, but when all the chips are down winning is the most important thing to him just like it is to every other college coach. Bronco saw an opportunity and he pounced. Own up to it.
Well done | 8:11 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
Good job Jake Garlock at USU. These fiends from the Y believe that they have manifest destiny over all LDS athletes and that is just a lie! Despite the Y's best efforts, the Church is still true.
coach carter | 8:13 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
riley should not have even been thinkin football at all while on his mission, he should have been focused on his teachings. riley also isn't allowed to contact schools while on his mission, so his parents are the ones that would've had to do his talking and his paperwork. when contacted bronco should've said, focus on doing the lords work and when you get back, we can talk. if bronco instigated the talks or not is a moot point, he still recruited riley and helped him along the path of leaving usu while on his mission. good job ncaa. boo cougars and bronco. how bout winning a bowl game before having a quest for perfection? or redemption? way to show up against fsu, who then got blasted by usf? at least oregon is ranked in the top 20 and the Utes made it respectable while missing a healthy asiata, which they no longer have, as well as playing horrible on special teams
Y Grad / Y Dad | 8:19 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
Come on, fans, don't kick the grumbling Ags while they're down. That well-aimed foot may well end up in our collective mouths.

For example, Clueless in Arizona. Up here is Washington, we don't prefer the UW or WSU over BYU. We save our resentment (hate is such a strong word) for institutions that we feel inferior to. Which presently for both schools is so many, it's hard to focus on one school anyway.

I'm still not convinced that Riley won't end the year as the starting quarteback anyway. Which would change the whole order of things next spring. And greatly add to the bitter grapes way up north. So just be nice to them (that will bug them most anyway). Or at least ignore them.

Re:Why Riley Left...great post....who cares, and the kid will "ride the pine" most of his career. The Bronkie
boys got the Heaper Creeper and his pose to commit so poor 'Riley will just be another back up to a what?

RE RE All you whiners...

Nelson is a sophomore, Gaskins and Hall are both Srs... so it is likely that he'll be starting the next two years, depending on what Heaps does...
re: clueless | 8:35 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
On my mission, the regional rep while there giving a fireside straight up asked a 300lb samoan elder if he wanted to play at BYU. Said he new Edwards very well. The Elder said BYU would be the last place he would play. I was standing right next to them. As a BYU fan, I was disappointed, but to say it doesn't happen is wrong.
his choice | 8:37 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
Nelson chose to leave a school where he was a leader, a starter and the face of the team. He went to a team where he will be anonynmous and spend his time on the bench. Maybe he was not cut out to be 'the man' at USU, he would rather be part of a winning team than lead a team to become winners. He did what he thought was best for him and that is perfectly fine.
Anonymous | 8:40 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
If this rule helps missionaries to be better missionaries then I am all for it. Athletes get 5 years to play 4. You only get 2 years to serve a mission. If you waste that time, you will never get it back.
Boise Coug | 8:48 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
It is funny how so many BYU fans think all LDS members and leaders support BYU. Our Elder's Quarum in Boise has a few BYU fans, a ton of BSU fans, a couple of UofU fans and even a Michigan fan. I have lived in several wards outside of Utah and would say there is every bit as many members who dislike BYU as there are who like them or don't care. I really think there is a different mentality or world view for Mormons who live in Utah County and those who live elsewhere. This is just one small example.
Losing | 8:57 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
The losing program always cries and complains. The Aggies know all about losing and they cry like little children. There fans get all excited when they score 14 points at the end of a game that was already decided in the first quarter. USU fans get all excited with moral victories. USU grad BYU fan for life!!!
@Y Grad / Y Dad | 9:02 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
It's great to see that good Christian charity remained with you long after you left the Y. I'm just curious, though, in your world view, is it acceptable to do good things for sinister motives? Sounds like it. They must have a different gospel in WA.

Based on your comments, I think he will be the back up to a slow moving and stinky train? Right. Probably an accurate description of Cougar football.
re: clueless | 8:35 a.m. | 9:15 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
Your example proves nothing. Do you have evidence that BYU asked this Elder to recruit the athlete in question?

The fact the some members, church leaders and BYU fans try to get promising athletes to go to BYU doesn't change the fact that BYU doesn't approve of anyone outside the athletic department recruiting players. I'm sure you can find lots of examples of fans and boosters from every school, including Utah State, who try to recruit athletes to their chosen school. MANY schools even encourage this (unofficially, behind the scenes, of course). BYU is not one of them. In fact, BYU is one of the few schools that goes out of its way to discourage such activity.
Ralph | 9:18 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
Who cares. Nelson was a 3rd stringer on just about any other football team. He is too short and too erratic to ever be a solid college QB. He won't play at BYU. USU now has a backup QB that will be better than Riley Nelson. I am a die-hard out of state Aggie, and for one am glad this guy transferred. I'll take the ones we have over Nelson any day. If you ask me, BYU just wasted a good scholarship.........
Re: Why Riley Left | 9:18 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
"BYU athletes routinely underhand their mission experience by spending two years "working out." Every missionary knew one."

You're joking right... We had 1 BYU football player in my mission and he did not work out. To suggest that most BYU football players go on missions to work out is crazy. I'm sure McKay Jacobson went to Sapporo, Japan to become a better football player! Maybe John Beck went to the football hotbed of Portugal to perfect his QB skills?

As for BYU having a double standard for football players, I'm sure you could cite some examples. But I do know while I attended BYU in the late 1990's, our star running back, Ronney Jenkins, was kicked off the team for honor code violations.
Cougarf@n | 9:19 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
Bitter bitter USU fans trying to defame Bronco over the Riley Nelson issue. Even if everything negative everyone has said is true, which I doubt, are we really supposed to get all bent out of shape over BYU offering a kid a scholarship while he's on his mission?

On the balance, BYU probably gets more players than they lost due to missions, but I think this is beneficial for everyone including BYU because it provides certainty. Hopefully coaches outside of Utah will be more willing to have their players go on missions if they know they can count on getting them back. Also, BYU's job of juggling missions is difficult enough and the added certainty will be a bonus for the program.

The only people who lose with this new rule are the players who won't be able to change their minds without sitting out a year after being two years removed from football. It's not the same as sitting out when you transfer right after being on the team. Coaching and personel changes can really affect a players decision, but now the WAC has ensured that the players have no choice.
BYU Dentist | 9:22 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
Riley is my brother-in-law's nephew. He wanted to go to BYU pre-mission, as he's a very devout LDS kid, but BYU had given the scholarship to James Lark. He could have walked on, but went to USU. He started as a true freshman. He's a Steve Young type QB. He's mobile and very accurate. He may even have a future in the NFL and I'd venture to say that he'd be starting for most programs. Next year, he will most likely be the starter at BYU. He made a great move to go to BYU, where he will work with better atheletes, better coaches and trainers, and in better facilities with much better TV exposure. He made the decision that was best for him. USU and the community in Logan have given him and his family a lot of grief over this whole thing and I understand their feelings of betrayal. He did what was best for his situation and he's going to get a quality education at BYU and a better chance to make a run at the NFL. Go Riley!
Big Agys fan | 9:29 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009

QB factory | 9:29 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
Riley Nelson chose to come to one of the great college QB factories over a school that hasn't had a decent football program since the 1960s.

What a shocker!

He chose the stiff challenge of competing with several other OUTSTANDING quarterbacks to have the opportunity to prove that he was good enough to play one of the premier positions in college football.

Instead of starting at Utah State, where he had practically no competition for the job, he accepted the much more difficult challenge of trying to earn the starting job at BYU. That's what great athletes do.

Robbie Bosco rode the pine behind Steve Young who rode the pine behind Jim McMahon who rode the pine behind Marc Wilson.

Nelson may not ever be the starting QB at BYU, but he was willing to accept the challenge.

I congratulate Riley for having the guts to do what he felt was in his own best self interest.

Shame on Aggie fans who can't support a young man for choosing what's best for him over the selfish interests of some of the Utah State complainers.

I hope Nelson gets in the game. Just to rub it in.
I'll bust a gut | 9:32 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
...laughing if BYU is up by something like 40 and they have Riley play the entire 2nd half and he scores a few more TDs against his former team. Aggie fans just love having their noses rubbed in stuff like this. That's why they keep crying about it and won't let it go.
citizen16 | 9:35 a.m. Sept. 30, 2009
I can't stop laughing at reading all of the whining here. People change their minds. So what? I never understood the uproar from some BYU fans when Olsen left. Given his bad experiences at BYU and the state of the program at the time, it was a logical and good decision from him to transfer to a Pac-10 school. Same thing with Nelson. There's nothing wrong with changing your mind or transferring schools. I'm also not bothered by missionaries trying to decide what to do with their lives.
