"So here he is, sitting in his apartment in the foothills above Salt Lake City, of all places, and it's as if he has landed on another planet. He can walk outside and not feel threatened. There are no gangs hanging out on street corners, no one offering drugs or menacing violence."

This writer needs to get out more.
Dear Interesting | 1:44 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
Those are the words of Shaky, not the writer. Try comprehending the story, you will enjoy it much more.

What a marvelous story. Congratulations to this young man. He shows character and class. Hope he is successful on and off the field.(except the BYU game)
Great story | 1:59 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
It's nice to see people making something of themselves, even if they do play for the Utes...

Keep up the great work Shaky and Anthony, you're a wonderful example!

What a bright future both these young men have! Whether it's football at the next level or taking on life's everyday tough challenges, I would sure want them on my team. Best of success to both of you and thanks for such an inspiring story.

Great story. Thanks for sharing.

I think Shaky and Anthony are amazing and courageous. They are an inspiration to others and I wish them the best of luck.
Nice to know | 6:29 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
That sports can have a positive impact in our lives. I get tired of all the bad things happening in sports. Go Shaky we will being cheering for you.
Welcome | 6:48 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
Great story. Glad to have you as a Ute!
Enter name@interesting | 6:49 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
While the statement may not be factually correct, in comparison to the Baltimore neighborhood they came from, it is figurally correct.
Anonymous | 6:53 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
Sounds like Anthony's got some decent footbal skills himself. Maybe he'll suit up as a Ute in a few years too.

Great story though. And to "Interesting", If you think that the foothills above SLC are comparable to inner city Baltimore, perhaps it is you who needs to get out more.
WSU Wildcat | 7:22 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
What a great story! Thanks for including such a wonderful inspiring positive article in your paper. These individuals and organizations that support him and his family are truly hero's. Note to editor...I believe that if media could include more of these kinds of stories, people would have a better opinion of media coverage and subscriptions would increase.
Great Read | 7:23 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
As a die hard cougar fan I will be cheering for Shaky
Wow... | 7:30 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
...great story! Fabulous story!

You gotta have so much respect for people who work hard to improve themselves and help others, regardless of the situation.

Shaky did a great job last Saturday at running back, in a touch situation when Eddie Wide went down.

Kepp working hard, guys, and things will turn out well for you!
Amazing... | 7:30 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
What an Amazing story! Wish the Best to the both of you and keep up the great work! Go Utes and Go Rams!!!

A great story about a man who has overcome adversity to climb the ladder of succes. I hope and pray that reaches his goal.
Bear Laker | 7:52 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
Great young men. I'm glad they came to our state and I hope they get lots of support fron us Utahns.
I'm not a Yoot fan but I root for all the people that overcome adversity regardless of who they are or play for.
Very Cool Story | 8:13 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
From a loyal Cougar fan, good luck Shaky!

What a terrific story and great example Shaky is to his little brother, his entire family, and all of us!
Good luck to both brothers!

We so much about the negative side of college athletics -- so many athletes abuse the privileges they are given. So it is absolutely wonderful to read about a young man who it making the most of the opportunities he is given. It makes us remember how much of a positive influence college athletics can really have in our society. Thanks for sharing the story.
BYUShakeyfaninMD | 8:26 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
I wonder if interesting ever has been in the Baltimore projects. While SLC certainly has its share of bad elements, it doesn't remotely compare to the area from which Shakeya and Anthony hail. What an inspiring story..thanks to the author and my hat to Shakey for doing the right thing. Good luck and what a great future for you and your family.
Good Stuff | 8:30 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
Great story. I wish both these brothers the best of luck.
Great Story | 8:30 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
It's a story like this that should be shouted from the rooftops. Giving hope to anyone who comes from a rough neighborhood and background. And showing those who come from priviledge what it means to suceed, for yourself and others.

Great to have you here at the U!
Amazing story! | 8:32 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
I wish the best for you and your entire family! It's great to be able to cheer for inspiring people on and off the field! I hope they feel at "Home" here!
salt lake | 8:40 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
The very first comment was correct, the writer needs to get out more. Great story (THE BOY'S STORY), but shamefully told. That simple.
Chuck | 8:48 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
It appears it truly is all about family and support. Shaky credits his family and extended family for their influence and support. Rules, high expectations and involvement are apparent in the references he makes to his youth. Home truly must be a refuge, no matter where you live -- especially in tough surroundings.
Anonymous | 8:49 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
No crime, violence, gangs, or drugs in Salt Lake City?!?!? Well, I'm glad it's at least better than LA.
MadMax | 8:52 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
This is a great story!
Shaky has already succeeded in life. I hope he gets his degree and tells his story to all who will listen. It will provide motivation for others to follow in his foot-steps. This example goes beyond partisanship and athletic rivalry. It is truly uplifting in every sense.
By the way to 'Interesting' if you have been to Baltimore in Shaky's neigborhood you'd understand why he feels the Foothills of SLC are safe and wonderful. You need to look at his statement in comparison to that violent and unsafe atmosphere. SLC is very far removed from a major inner city environment and is very safe in comparison.

GO SHAKY!
GO UTES!
Lina | 8:52 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
Another cougar fan who is cheering to this young man and how he shines off and on the field.

Great story - we need to see more of these. Stories such as this one touches the heart more than all the stimulus and government-sponsored programs to get "teens and others" off the street. Great support system.

Thanks | 8:55 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
Thank you for such an inspiring story. Shaky and Anthony are great examples for all of us to follow. Keep it up guys!

...and GO UTES!!!
Georgian | 8:55 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
I've been a Cougar fan my whole life, and I wish we had Shaky because he encompasses what the Y football program tries so hard to be. Best of luck Shaky!
chandevry | 8:57 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
What well manored, hard-working, level headed young men...and handsome too! Good luck in all you do. This is a great story! We're very glad to have you in Utah.
Awesome... | 9:02 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
Glad to have them as a Ute and Ram. Hopefully little brother will stay with the Rams even when Shaky is done at the U. Maybe Anthony will earn a scholarship to play for the Utes. He sounds like a 'little Shaky'.
Coug fan | 9:08 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
It is amazing what an inspirational story can do. Coug and Ute fans agree on a story. If you find a way to negativly comment on this story, then you have serious issues or work for D. News competitor and want to take away business. Congrats to this family, 99.9% of us Americans can't say we have had nearly as difficult of a life. The best of luck to this family who proves that there are still great people in the world.
Baltimore | 9:10 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
You people that say the writer needs to get out more have no clue what you are talking about. I have been to Baltimore and Salt Lake's gang and drug probleems do not compare to it.
Anne | 9:10 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
What a great young man and what a wonderful example to all of us! It is great to have Shaky playing for the University of Utah and I wish him all the best! Also good luck to his younger brother, Anthony. What a great family!

To those who are criticizing the writing of this piece, you are sadly missing the point. You must be the kind who when looking at a rosebush can only see the thorns.
lynn | 9:13 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
WAY TO GO SHAKY!! And for all you detractors...Salt Lake has its problems, but anyone who compares SL to a rough Baltimore nieghborhood is just showing their ignorance. Those commenters should try living one week in the Bronx, Harlem, or...yes, even parts of Philadelphia and Baltimore. Believe me, Shaky knows what he's talking about.
THANK YOU, SHAKY! | 9:21 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
You are an inspiration to our family! Thank you for being so grateful, positive & determined. You are a wonderful brother. I hope my children will better appreciate what they have because of your story. Don't give up!
Sally | 9:24 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
What a great human interest story. I think Shaky is a wonderful young man to take on the responsiblity of a younger sibling in order to give him a better life. I hope it works out for both of them. They sound like a great team. So many young people, trying to better their lives, end up making just one mistake and it all goes away (drugs, pregnancy, dropping out of school). Shaky avoided all that and is now helping his brother. I'll be rooting for both.
sick of midnight critic | 9:25 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
Does the Midnight Critic (who always has to have the first comment of the day) EVER say anything nice??? You are so contentious, you take the sunshine out of everything. No wonder you can't sleep! Have a nice day!
Thanks for doing this story | 9:26 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
Shaky, you are the man. I'm inspired by the life you and your family lead. Good luck to you and to Anthony in all you both do!

These are the kind of stories that are out there and that should be shared by news outlets more often.
Go Utes | 9:46 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
Great Story, Have we signed the brother yet? He sounds like he could be just as good.
Amazing! | 9:53 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
Shaky and Anthony, way to go! We are all so proud of you! You guys are amazing! Keep working hard!
Shauna | 10:10 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
What a remarkable young man and family. Accolades to all of them. And what a heartwarming story; so refreshing for a change. With more stories of these experiences, it would re-energize our alliegence to America. Way to go, Shaky; you make us proud!
JenniferUtefan | 10:11 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
Thanks for sharing that story Shaky and Anthony. You have an amazing family...keep it up! You're an inspiration to us all...if we all helped eachother as much as you guys seem to, things would be so much better. Thank you again for sharing!
a real man | 10:16 a.m. Sept. 29, 2009
this article on shaky shows us a terrific example of how a real man acts. he has excelled in the face of adversity and taken responsibility for his brother. i hope shaky and his family always stays connected with the UU-family.
