How long will it take for our legislators to pass a law that requires ethic reforms? Our states' legislators refusal to pass an ethics initative is shameful. We should call our legislators, demand that they vote for reforms, and refuse to vote for those who will not hold themselves and their fellow legislators to ethical standards.

Is our country really at a point where we have to pass ethics laws in order to ensure semi-decent behavior from our legislators.

We have People as Public Servants that do not care nor do they serve the People.
They have a strange Idea they are Dictators, Queens and Kings.
They will turn and walk away from you.
Shameless is the answer to politics.
Without ETHICS, We the peole have nothing.
Our Elected People do not recognize WE THE PEOPLE.

This seems like a bill to protect the politically apathetic. Here’s why: If the passage of this ethics measure cannot its intent because opponents of the same are able to 1) circumvent it by spending their own money ($2.4 million is nothing to a Romney or a Huntsman), or 2) re-channel political funds through legal PAC’s and achieve the same legitimate monopoly of political control if there were no ethical legislation passed, then this proposed legislation is not sensible, not is it the knock-out-punch curing the so-called political-ethical corruption which it boasts to eliminate. On the other hand, if mass political participation and representation are what are truly desired by the authors of this proposed legislation (and I am not sure anybody really wants that), then it is essential to educate and prepare the masses to compete with the already politically active.

Why is it that folks like the 3 above never get up and run for office?

Let's get all the greed and dirty money out of politics. We need to get these rich Republicans out of the dirty politics business. This is the best move we can make. I want stacks of these initiatives and I will get them signed. We need to hold our own ethics committee at the ballot box and vote out all these dirty money Republican out of office and now!!

I think a better answer would be to totally abolish all donations to the national party and have it funded fully by dues of representitives and require no donations can come from outside state they represent except for presidential canidates

Sleuth- too many people just push the button for anyone with an R after their name no matter what, so the threat of being voted out doesn't come into play most of the time in Utah, and our politicians know that.

Incumbents generally start with more name ID than their opponent, so if you make fund raising more difficult for both you hurt the challenger more than the incumbent because he needs money to catch up.

This is the logical basis of the argument that only the wealthy (or famous) would be able to run for office, and it's pretty sound.

As a people let's not give up our role and that of the 4th Estate (the media) to hold representatives liable for unethical actions to an unelected political death panel that can be used as a sounding board for false allegations to help with "October Surprises."

Because libel doesn't exist for some people and my loved ones do not deserve to be treated like we treat the political family.

People should be able to run for office but their family affairs should be left out of the light entirely, like Edwards. (I accept the campaign funds issue being legit, but before that was in question, his family dealt with what a family should never have to deal with.)
