"But it appears that at least for now Herbert's not ready to lead out on two of the critical issues before the 2010 Legislature – ethics reform and taxes."

It appears that Herbert is not ready for much of anything. Lets add the nuclear waste to the picture.

Utah needs a center right governor. Too bad there are none in the horizon.

impressed

I'm impressed with Herbert's common sensed approach to these difficult issues. It's nice to have a Governor who was tested and honed through nearly two decades of public service -- it clearly shows and we're all the beneficiaries.

Roland Kayser

To my slc: Peter Corron seems petty center-right on economic/fiscal matters.

I agree Roland, Peter Corroon would be a great governor but I am afraid he would be a sacrificial lamb. Utah will not vote democrat. SLC and County will but no where else in the state.

Besides, Peter is doing a great job as SL County Mayor.

bluecollar

if the state legislature would move to enact meaningful ethics reform on its own, there would be no citizens' initiative. so far, that has not happened.
the ethics reform initiative seems rather harsh.
but i reject herbert's notion that it would force only wealthy persons to run for office. the opposite is true. persons who are well qualified but of lower income are currently less likely to run for state office because they are less well-connected and unlikey to attract the big campaign donations necessary to compete.
i plan to sign the initiative and vote for it.
it will keep the honest people honest.

our leaders and legislators cut our taxes when our economy was robust. that way, we could have "less government, lower taxes and more money in the pockets of the American people.." remember that?
now that revenue is less secure, there's nothing left to cut without imposing severe hardship on the most vulnerable members of our society.

we're stuck for now but i hope there's a lesson here somehow.

I agree that Herbert seems unwilling to take a position on anything be it ethics, water, taxes, nuclear waste, you name it. This is not the trait of a leader. I think the only thing I have heard him state with any authority is that global warming has not been proven and is most definitely not a man made problem if ever it is proven.

Herbert questions the constitutionality of restricting personal, corporate and PAC campaign contributions, but we are one of only a handful of states that do not restrict corp. and PAC campaign contributions. I think this has already been addressed. Until the money is limited, greedy big money players will control our legislators. Anyone that cannot see this is not looking.

Herbert seeks Press

Every move Herbert makes is for the media and should be labeled "Herbert's 2010 Campaign." He hasn't taken a stand on anything controversial and it is unbelievable that he is getting so much time on the television news!
