Low personal wealthy....

...and "The Corporation for Enterprise Development, a nonprofit study group, concludes in its "Assets & Opportunity Scorecard" that Utahns are vulnerable to current economic hardships...." and SCAMS!

When the major "investments" of a portion of a state depend on handshakes, MLMs, pyramid, get-rich-quick seminars....who's doing what to whom?

Something Fishy

Something is stinky here. Tenth in the nation for home ownership... 11th in the nation for low foreclosure... but a low grade on overall financial circumstance?

High on home ownership, low on foreclosure, but poor financial management?

Brian

Something is Fishy: You are assumption that only individuals in good financial standing purchase homes, that is certainly not the case. Ninja loans (No job, income, or assets) were a large portion of home loans made in Utah over the past three years, you will soon see foreclosures increase steadily here over the next few quarters. The group is merely trying to say is that people need more hard assets, currency, and other very liquid assets incase of emergencies, which most do not have. Also, something the reporter did not mention was the high dependence on credit cards in Utah. Utahs carry some of the highest amount of debt in the country on un-secured loans (CC, etc)

It would help if ponzi schemes run by horrible people wouldn't keep ripping of Utah citizens.

So much for conservative, frugal values. Utahns spend and go into debt like crazy. The consumerism in Utah is off the charts.

wallofvoodoo

Gee, financial insecurity in the land of low wages. Who would have thought?

hmmmm

low forclosure rates? If Utahns are doing so poorly, how come they are not forclosing as rapidly as the rest of the nation? Something is fishy.

As an out of towner I have never witnessed a society based almost unequivically on materialism. Fast food on every corner, the hair stylist making six figures. Loan crooks advertising on every block. The keep up with the Jones mentality, People need to find contentment with what they have and not have a false sense of status with how much they own, Or the make of vehicle or how fast they drive. Im sure the make and model of handcart being pulled into this valley didnt hold much status or the ply of toilet paper in the outhouses. Come down to earth people and remember your roots. Reality its a breath of fresh air.

Bill Baumgardner Sr.

The biggest reason for this is because when a family in Utah builds a house for $400,000.00 & then someone builds one across the street for $500,000.00, the first one has to sell & go build another one for $750,000.00 & on & on & on! This is why there are so many in debt way over their income, KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES! Ha Ha Ha. And I have NO sympathy for any of them. If these members would listen to their church leaders, they would build a house substantial for their family & forget what the others have built. AMEN!

Excellent obseravations, I would have to agree with your assessments. For a State with a great deal of conservative religious influence, I find the existence of consumerism and materialism to be very disappointing indeed. It must be the the evil democrats that are to blame. (NOT)

The wages here as very, very, very low. Mechanical engineers start at less than 20 dollars an hour. With no experience and only a college degree I started at 12.50 an hour as a mechanical engineer. Something else not mentioned here is how unaffordable the rent is in Utah. The Deseret Reader has done a story on this. To afford to rent a 2 bedroom house in Utah you have to make 14.33, yet the average wage in Utah is still 12.00 an hour, that’s scary. Every friend I know who are working professionals, even with college degrees, are living pay check to pay check… I think everyone who lives pay check to pay check knows how this does not feel good. It seems the only way to make more money is to leave Utah, which at one point I will have to do.

Troutman

Duh! Living from Paycheck to Paycheck? What a novel thought! Nah! this can't be, for "This Is The Place" just not for wealth, unless your name is Smith, Young, Hunstman, Sorrenson, Hatch, Macarther, Gubler, Hafen, Williams, Bennett, Allen, Hansen, Hyde, Thurgood, Perry, and etc. etc. and I almost forgot Jeffs!!!!

Do I have issues? Darn Right! Am I bitter about living in a state that is Elite, You bet I am. Will this get printed, doubt it!
