What?

An unpopular Republican won in Utah when he could only win in one other state? How could that be?

Jay

We'll just pretend that "What" is asking a legitimate question, rather than a sarcastic dig at Utah Republicans. Taft was not a bad president. He was later appointed to the US Supreme Court, and performed there admirably. For some good, and some artificial, reasons we tend to lionize Teddy Roosevelt. Not all his praise is justified. His egocentric Bullmoose Party split the Republicans. The effect was the election of Woodrow Wilson, perhaps in many ways among the worst American presidents.

Roosevelt was deteriorating, Wilson was a collectivist dreamer, leaving Taft as perhaps the best candidate of the three. Could it be that Utah was among the few states that recognized that fact and was not carried away in the vicissitudes and dangers of "politics as usual?"
