How humiliating.

I'd like to take that sod out of his hand.

Besides, FSU didn't really win the game. We lost it.
Re: True Blue | 12:26 a.m. Sept. 20, 2009
Ummmmmmm, help me understand how you can give up 30 first downs and 514 yards yet feel your opponent didn't beat you. I'm thinking we lost the game today to a better than expected FSU team. No excuses, we lost.
Anonymous | 12:44 a.m. Sept. 20, 2009
Florida State's offense was perfect. They won it fair and square and came in ready to fight and never let up. That's highly admirable in any team. We didn't.

It'd be nice if BYU fans would react with both humility and fighting spirit. Instead they get caught up in gloating when they win and fall apart as soon as things don't go their way.

Dear BYU: As a Seminole I can understand how deflating last night's game can be... been there too many times. No doubt that BYU will rebound and earn the respect we so desperately had to acquire at a do or die junction of our season last night. We think highly of your program as do so many across the country and the mountains in the background were fantastic in high definition. You are blessed. You will rebound and we will be pulling for you. All the best to you and your conference. Jack

Crushed is not even the right word. BYU embarrassed its fan base yesterday. They didn't even show up at all. I mean I could have been more proud being a UTE or Aggies yesterday.

BYU didn't even look like they belonged. Remember us chirping about FSU barely beating Jacksonville State??? What happened? FSU is not that good?

To not show up for a game of this magnitude is a reflection of the soft nature of the school, the players and the program.

We embarrassed the mtn west, non bcs and Western US schools with our pathetic display.

To think I really thought we would be busting this year. Pathetic.

I consider myself a "true" BYU fan and I will say I was worried about the Florida State speed. Where I thought it would hurt us the most is with our offense. It was the defense that let us down in this game. You go with the players you have, but it seems like the defensive coaches could never figure out how to attack the FSU offense. With conference play beginning things will pick up for us.
FSU didn't win? | 9:34 a.m. Sept. 20, 2009
Come on. FSU offense was nearly flawless. They did everything exactly right and the BYU defense couldn't stop them. Even if you take out the 17 points FSU gained off of turnovers BYU wouldn't have won.
Lot's Of Questions... | 9:48 a.m. Sept. 20, 2009
My biggest question about this loss is what the reason is for BYU's complete meltdown on defense. Was it lack of athletes? Was it just a bunch of blown assignments? Was it the coach's game plan? Was it poor preparation? How do you get so physical against Oklahoma and then look so pathetic against FSU?
Ironically FSU's defense wasn't really that much better. A bunch of unforced turnovers made them look a lot better than they are and they showed many of the same weaknesses they had against Miami.
I just hope this really isn't what BYU is bringing to the table defensively week to week.
Bob2 | 10:14 a.m. Sept. 20, 2009
Wow, your kids may have fallen apart last night, but it's the fan base that is embarrasing themselves today. The Utes lost a tough one at Eugene, but I'm not going to throw them all under the bus. They are my team and I'm going to hurt all week until they beat tear up Louisville in RES next week. These are my guys! They've been BCS busters two times in the last 4 years! Here's how to keep it in perspective Cougar fans,
1. Don't base your own human and afterlife worth on a bunch of young people playing with a ball that takes weird bounces.
2. Don't make crazy boasts to inflate your own ego.
3. Realize that a BCS busting season is almost a miracle. VERY hard to accomplish. You will probably never do it. Two in 4 years is off the charts. Don't even dream about it.
4. Get behind your guys! Win or lose! Be a fan and someone your TEAM can be proud to call one of it's own.

Let's think about this a minute...was BYU's defense really good against Oklahoma or did Oklahoma's offense that night make BYU's defense look good. I think the latter. The Oklahoma was one very sloppy football game. We prevailed because we weren't quite as sloppy as Oklahoma. We proved NOTHING in Dallas that evening.
Bob in line | 11:53 a.m. Sept. 20, 2009
BYU was out coached last night. I don't say that as a slam to Mendenhall but respect for Bobby Bowden.

BYU is big and the play is designed that way. What FSU did on offense was really smart. All of those 3 step drop passes where we had no time to rush the quarterback. Then it was speed on zone.

We were out coached. Stinks but this is why they play the games.

I predict that BYU wins the games we are suppose to though for the sake of the MWC I would be happy if TCU went BCS busting this year. BYU will win the remainder of the season most likely. Should be able to handle Utah, time will tell with TCU.

Now to see how they can handle losing this game. Next week isn't going to be a cake walk.

BYU 11-1, goes to the freak'n Las Vegas Bowl! That alone is penalty for yesterday's performance.

To Jack:

Thanks for a classy post. Your team earned a great win last night, and we likewise wish you the best in the remainder of your season. You came back from your early season stumble, and hopefully we will do the same. May the season end with both of us in the top 10!

Like most people who aren't byu, that is no class. Taking sod from a field. We don't do stuff like that. Win with class florida!
The BYU Challenge... | 12:52 p.m. Sept. 20, 2009
One of the greatest challenges facing BYU is recruiting top tier athletes for their program. Many talented athletes want to play in top tier programs but the fact remains that BYU is a religion based school and that is a significant hindrance to their ability to recruit. BYU clearly needs to recruit speed and unfortunately for them most of that speed comes from out of state and from athletes that have no intention nor desire to attend a religion based school. BYU should resign themselves to being a good Mtn. West school and stop looking for national rankings and BCS invitations. If quality athletes go to Utah they will go north to the UTES where they can still be men of honor and not be required to adhere to a foreign moral code.
badlandscougar | 12:56 p.m. Sept. 20, 2009
the defense looked ordinary all game, didn't look like they adjusted. hey cougars, just get ready and play every week!
the mental game | 1:23 p.m. Sept. 20, 2009
BYU went into an OU game with the season on the line. They prepared and outplayed and outcoached the Sooners. They knew that with that 1 win, credibility would be earned, based on the remaining schedule. FSU lost to Miami and barely beat Jacksonville State. They came into BYU with the season on the line. They prepared and outplayed and outcoached the Cougars. They knew that with that 1 win, credibility would be earned, based on the rest of their schedule.
I dare say BYU prepared lights out for OU, more than they did for FSU. I also dare say FSU prepared lights out for BYU and that's why they won. We DO have a good schedule upcoming. We can recover. Look what FSU did in their recovery game. GO COOGS! Let the FS game ignite you to get back.
Speed was not a factor | 1:52 p.m. Sept. 20, 2009
I was at the game and sat on the first row behind the Florida State bench. Speed did not seem to be a factor. We simply could not find their RB or QB until they had gained positive yards. Multiple times I saw the back hit the line and get stoped but no one tackled him and he just kept moving parallel to the line until he could break open. It wasn't the speed that got us, it was the play calling and execution of the FL State offense that won the game.

Re: Ernest T. Bass | 12:43 p.m.  | 2:19 p.m. Sept. 20, 2009
Ernie, I couldn't disagree more. That picture is a classic. The FSU player holding a piece of sod is symbolic of the piece of hide they took out of us last night. They owned BYU. If they want the sod, it's theirs to take.
SEC Saint | 2:34 p.m. Sept. 20, 2009
To "Speed was not a Factor" - Why do you think you couldn't find the RB or QB. Yep, you guessed it, speed!

Playing Calling and Execution are important, in fact critical. Speed is what prevents a team from making adjustments. BYU executes well, the team is well coached.

Also - to those that say our standards are a hindrance, what about Tim Tebow? His moral standards are as high as ours. BYU does need to put more effort into recruiting outside of Utah, but great athletes with morals, character, and values (and speed) can be found.

Meanwhile support the team, if the Cougars continue to play solid non-conference teams and splits the win/loss columns, it will help recruiting and the team will grow in confidence, ability, and character. Better a loss to Florida State, then a win against St. Mary's.

Go Cougars!
To Ernest T. Bass | 2:36 p.m. Sept. 20, 2009
Really, you're going to go there? A BYU fan telling another school to "win with class" is truly rich. I'll remember this when BYU fan storms the field after winning the meaningless Helicopter Bowl in December.
To Ernest T. Bass | 2:54 p.m. Sept. 20, 2009
We're lucky they didn't roll up the North end zone and walk out with it. Who could have stopped them? They did everything else they wanted to do last night.

SoCalBYUfan | 5:56 p.m. Sept. 20, 2009
Two words explain this loss. ARM TACKLING. It worked OK for BYU in the 80's and 90's but in today's game you better be ready to score 50 points or more if we cant tackle. Three or four misses on each FSU run is unacceptable.
BYU | 6:08 p.m. Sept. 20, 2009
was completely out coached and out classed. I was sad to have predicted this outcome!
Reality | 6:43 p.m. Sept. 20, 2009
This is the "True Blue" BYU team......every year you beat a "great team" and a helpless one and think they are right back to winning the national championship. The only difference between this year and '84 is this year you ran into a quality team and got WORKED just like last year! Had the '84 team played anyone as good as FSU then they would have been worked too!
Welcome back to reality team and zoobs, you were NEVER as good as you thought you were! Hall is not a true Heisman consideration and BYU is nothing but a average team in a weak conference for the last several years.
There is a reason TDS gets beat so badly when a Utah, TCU and others are playing quality football, BYU never gets better, they just beat teams when they are down.
Looks like that defense is right back to were it started last year!
RE: Re: True Blue | 7:31 p.m. Sept. 20, 2009
BYU had NEARLY the SAME amout of yards,

yeah defense did not play well, poor tackling by the first tackler.

but it was turnovers that hurt the most and the NOT called pass interfence,

if NOT for that it would have come down who scored last.

Speed was NOT the biggest issue.
To: Re: re: True Blue | 8:55 p.m. Sept. 20, 2009
Keep telling yourself that speed wasn't the issue in this game. FSU did ANYTHING they wanted and more. They didn't need to punt the entire night. They punted on the 4th and short after they had a four touchdown lead.

BYU's defense looked SLOW against FSU's runningbacks and FSU's D was fast enough to go man to man on BYU - which is how you beat the Y. Go man to man. Watch TCU, Utah, FSU.

Keep telling yourself it's not the speed after every loss to a legit BCS team. who doesn't have their QB go down with a shoulder injury.

NoleFan | 9:30 a.m. Sept. 21, 2009
BYU has a great team and fan base we just happened to be clicking and I agree it would have been much closer if not the the turnovers. For the record our offense is very very good and our defense is not so good but getting better each game.
beware of pride | 9:30 a.m. Sept. 21, 2009
The ute fans have been warning BYU of their pride all year long. How soon BYU forgets! Their pride cycle sure moves at a fast clip, their bowl game last year...FSU...us ute fans aren't mad at you...just disapointed...really disapointed...TCU will have to be the BCS buster this year since BYU can't get it done. See you in November chumps!
Haka | 10:02 a.m. Sept. 21, 2009
I didn't see the beginning of the game. Did we do the Haka? We looked flat. Maybe we should look at having a different player lead the Haka.
Speed? | 10:09 a.m. Sept. 21, 2009
Was speed really such a factor? I saw our WR outrun a corner and safety for a long touchdown pass. I saw Unga beat the defense to the corner for big gains several times. They isolated our corners one on one many times and didn't get anything. It wasn't really a speed issue. We just couldn't finish a tackle, couldn't stay in a lane, and couldn't mark the QB. They won by earning extra yards after the first hit on the runs which led to 3rd and 3, which led to 1st down.
aj | 10:31 a.m. Sept. 21, 2009
Last year TCU lost to Oklahoma by "25" points.

They (TCU) finished the season ranked 7th in the Country and just missed a BCS bowl due the Utes great year.

In week 3 of the 2009 season, BYU just lost by "26" points to a very underated FSU team.

Where will BYU end up? Who knows, but to say all is lost is just stupid.

One writer for FOX, Futiak, (longtime BYU critic) has stated already, that not one BYU player is worthy or would have even been recruited by FSU.

Originality not being his forte, he merely echoed Barry Switzers same comment about the Utes vs. Alabama.

I sincerely doubt that Stoops or Bowden agrees with that nonsense.

If BYU and Utah are now suddenly so pathetic, then let us not hear from Oregon, FSU, Arizona etc. on how beating them is now a "Badge of Honor".

The key for the MWC teams is to finish in the top 25, with higher rankings and more teams than the Big East. That is the battle, to out do the Big East so as to be included in the new BCS contract in two years.
bluto | 10:41 a.m. Sept. 21, 2009
FSU...
We are honored that you memorialize your victory over BYU, it shows your respect for our program.

BYU fans...
It's not who you lose to, but when you lose. This loss is early enough for BYU to still make something out of this season.

As for the National Championship talk etc. it was the National Media that started that, not BYU fans.
Grow up!

There are many weeks and many teams ahead of BYU who will yet lose games.

Just enjoy the ride and take it a game at a time. This humbling experience could be good for the Cougs and the Utes.

Get some perspective, and come in from off the ledge.

This FSU team is very good and fast and most likely will finish in the top 10.

As for BYU, they may have a senior QB, but Hall is famous for a couple meltdowns a year. He's never really taken care of the ball, fumbles and ints are common for him.

You can't win with 5 turnovers, period!

Let's hope Max can protect the ball better, but, don't count on it.

Let's see more of Riley. He looked sharp.
true bloo-hoo | 12:38 p.m. Sept. 21, 2009
Sadly, the game was over before it even started. While FSU was getting ready to kick off, their players strutted out on the field, danced to the warm-up music and dared the crowd to boo them. They intimidated everyone, from the fans right down to the coaches and players. I knew BYU was in trouble right then.
Mike | 2:25 p.m. Sept. 21, 2009
When Max is losing he gets tunnel vision and only looks at one reciever and tries to force the ball to him no matter who else might be open. That intercetion run back for a touchdown is a prime example. He had the same problem last year, especially in the lost games.

Hall will never be among the best BYU QB's simply because he doesn't have the intangibles that the others have had. Let's see Nielson.
New Sod | 4:19 p.m. Sept. 21, 2009
There were plenty of divots for FSU to choose from at the end of the game.
