I thought that was the plan

Isn't the whole downtown mall project supposed to create a ton of additional "park" areas to congregate and relax?

The plaza on main between north and south temple is a good beginning to realizing this vision.

The plaza on Main Street was a good beginning...

But, you have to keep in mind, free speech, civil rights, the selling of public property to lock out certain folks.

I agree, Main Street with Trax in the middle is so limited now that a green space would be a great idea. (Perhaps even a little “bit of Paris).

Just keep it out of private hands. SLC already made one big mistake. No need to recreate it.

Hello!

Desnews! You're killing me! This picture doesn't show what you're talking about. More pictures please? Please? I'm dyin' to see this thing and I can't even see anything. You've got the cameras zoomed into the guys beltbuckle for pete's sake.

Annoyed

"Car drivers probably think of it as we're annoying them"

All I can say is NO KIDDING! There isn't enough parking as it is.

I'm all for having parks, if there is enough water to maintain them and enough room to put them. But some people go too far...

Oh, and the comment about the SLC making a mistake...most people do no feel that it was a mistake. ONLY the select "group(s)" you are refering to does. If someone owns property and does not want you harrassing visitors on your property...they SHOULD have the right to keep you off. There is PLENTY of public property around to demonstrate on. Why focus on one small FORMERLY public street....get over it! Do you realize that such select "groups" don't give a hoot about anyone else's rights? They want to be able to do whatever they feel like no matter who else it hurts.

Taking the time to SEE this and ENJOY it? Really amazing. As landscape architect Puddy noted, it just gives one the imagination to really "see" what things could be like. Big thumbs up--to the concept, to Mark, and to his friends for spreading the word. HERE'S to another small step toward weaning our overwhelming reliance on car culture and migrating toward a more walk-able, bike-able, board-able City. Kudos, all--INCLUDING the D-News for covering this so nicely.

American Citizen

London has banned cars from downtown. In New York, a significant part of the traffic is just circling blocks waiting for a parking spot to appear.

Downtown car free areas are the future. Mass transit is underground and the people are walking at ground level.

The cars? Back at the park and kiss lots in the suburbs.
