ESPN now practically owns the BCS, and likely will have a PPV championship game.
It's ESPN's best interest to preserve the conferences they air, and punish
those not on ESPN Cable Network.
If the statement speaks for itself, then that's because you heard what you
wanted to hear.
Somebody up there wanted "corroborating evidence" regarding Griese's comment??
You have to be kidding me. The statement speaks for itself.
The Mountain West has three good teams? As opposed to the one good team in the
Pac-10? Or the 3 good teams in the Big 12? Or the one good team (if that) in
the Big 10? Or would you rather compare it to the 3 good teams in the SEC? I
would number the good teams in the ACC and the Big Least, but they don't have
any good teams.
for all of us that can remember is when his son Brian played in the national
championship game for Michigan against Washington State. Washington State was
driving with a chance to win the game. The clock inexplicably ran out after
either a timeout or incomplete pass when there should have been at least one, if
not two seconds on the clock. It is likely that the Washington State would not
have scored. But the fact that Griese said nothing about it was weak. The fact
that whoever he was working with and I can't remember said nothing about it was
weak. But there was also something going besides Bob probably being
overcome with emotion for his son while his sidekick that night was asleep at
the microphone. See that year was before the BCS and there was real
talk of a split national champion (which there actually was Michigan and
Nebraska). But ABC wanted its game to be the "National Championship" game not
the Nebraska game on another network. So if Washington State somehow beat
Michigan their ABC game didn't mean anything. At any rate it was weak corporate
journamlism at it's best (worst).
I heard his comment live and thought the exact same thing. Thanks Pierce, for
vocalizing and publishing my exact thoughts.
I have to take exception to your idea that Boise St is more respected nationally
than Utah. Yes, Utah beat Alabama (who you say didn't want to be there), but who
says that Oklahoma wanted to be in the Fiesta Bowl playing Boise St?Obviously you have no clue about the respect that the Mountain West Conference
is getting. Last year they were rated the 4th or 5th best conference in the
country. The conference deserves to be in the BCS more than either the Big Least
or the ACC. And yes, the conference has 3 great teams (all ranked in the top
18). Some of the other teams are good and a few are mediocre, but thats better
than the WAC where you have Boise St and sometimes Fresno St who are good and
the rest are garbage. Why do you think Boise St goes undefeated in the
conference most years. NO COMPETITION. I like to see Boise St do well and
beat the likes of Oregon, but if they were in the Mountain West Conference, they
would be lucky to ever win the championship since they actually have to play
What you are basically saying is that people like you, and the elitist system
that created the BSC want other conferences to shut up and take the scraps you
throw from the table."If BYU and Utah win out everything will be
taken care of. Being in the BCS won't influence voters to put them in the
championship game."As things stand right now Florida could lose 1
game and it can still play for the NC. It can lose 2-3 games and still play in a
BCS game. It is guaranteed if they win their conference.BYU, Utah,
and teams from any other non BCS conference need to be go undefeated in order to
get into a big money game. But the seat at the National Championship table is
already reserved for the Nobles, unless things really go to crap, which I'm
hoping for this year.If the BCS gets broken up then watch, within a
few years recruiting will change, venues will expand, and teams from the SEC,
Big 12 and PAC 10 etc will no longer be saying (like Bob Griese) "Remember when
we were feared..."
Whether the author likes it or not, the context of Griese's comment is
important. The broadcast crew was talking Notre Dame and Michigan -- not about
Fresno State or any non-BCS team.It doesn't appear that the BCS was
in the conversation at all, so asserting that his comment "proves he is a BCS
blowhard" is disingenuous at best.Maybe Griese thinks college
football is more interesting when the traditional powers are powers. Nothing
more."You know, everything won't be right in the scheme of things in
college football until Notre Dame gets back and Michigan gets back and all the
powers that used to be get back to where they were," Griese said. And, from this, you deduce that Griese is a shameless BCS hack who was telling
all of the non-BCS schools to go pound sand?Report to the BYU
trainers' room immediately. You strained your shoulder making that reach.Awful, awful column. You want to write something on the shortcomings of
the BCS, fine. But to take one comment from Griese with no corroborating
evidence and turn it into a hatchet job is bush-league journalism."Pardon me for overreacting." Indeed.
What about the comment was wrong? The casual football fan is happier when teams
they recognize and know are better and involved. That's why ratings for games
with Notre Dame and Michigan dwarf anything Boise & Utah does. It's why Boise's
Fiesta Bowl and Utah's Sugar Bowl, while impressive, were ratings stinkbombs.Just keep winning games and stop moaning. Notice that Boise State has
far more respect nationally than Utah and its whining, annoying fanbase. Wow,
you beat an Alabama team that didn't feel like being there. Big deal. The
Mountain West is a garbage conference with 2/3 good teams and five horrible
I have no idea who you cheer for during football season. But I take it that you
must think it is one of the elite teams. I have news for. If you are not
cheering for either Florida or USC, then your team is second tier according to
your comments.Have a nice second tier, elitist season. The rest of us will
enjoy the season cheering for which ever team we cheer for.
Flukes happen. But there no real college football fan [not talking about a
specific team fan Ewe's and Yewt's] that does not admit and recognize that the
elite teams are elite for a reason - they are better than non-elite teams MOST
every time.2nd Tier is just that, second tier.
Excellent article Scott. I saw that Fresno State game and I heard
those comments which got your rile and I totally agree with you.On a
different occasion, and I'm not sure if Griese was involved or not, but it was
on ESPN when BYU was playing another team, i.e. TCU or Utah, and the whole time,
the two sport reporters were talking about other BCS teams that had played years
ago. That to me was the ultimate insult. We had to have the radio on while
watching the T.V. to hear what was going on in our own game.
Scott, stop perpetuating the BCS whine that is coming out of the state of Utah.
Enough already! We know BYU and Utah (and TCU) are good. We also know that
Wyoming, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Colorado State, and Air Force
aren't. If BYU and Utah win out everything will be taken care of. Being in the
BCS won't influence voters to put them in the championship game. Stop whining,
you are doing a disservice to your readers.
does not practice journalism. All of its "news" programming is devoted to
advertising events it televises and the teams that play in the biggest
games--the ones ESPN and ABC televise. CBS does the same thing by selling the
SEC as an invincible conference.Let's not get discouraged when
announcers do what they get paid for.Let's hope our teams continue
to beat the AQ's long enough that the MWC is finally back on national
television, then we might have more people talking seriously about Utes and
Cougars.Tomorrow is one of the last chances of the year for the MWC
to get national exposure on a network (Versus is decidedly not national TV).
The Utes better not get splattered.
You'll have to forgive Griese for just wanting back the good old days. For him
that would be around the '60's. Anyone a generation older would be talking about
Army and Navy of the '40's representing the proper balance of power. A
generation before that, Harvard-Yale.Everyone wishes things could go
back to the way they were, whenever that was. He's just being nostalgic, that's
You must be a Utah fan trying to stir things up... if you aren't, knock it off.
We are a long way from January and a long way from even being MWC champs, stop
talking about an NC. You embarrass real fans who know that a lot can happen.Cheer for BYU in the present tense, for the coming game against the Seminoles
and be happy right now, but leave the future to the BYU staff and players, you
don't hear them talking about an NC.
ESPN used to be as pathetic as the mountain. Their announces were horrible,
poor insight into the game, missed TV shots, the camera guys couldn't find who
had the ball half the time, the rarely saw where the ball was kicked. The
announcers blathered about everything except the game. The transmission was
horrible. It took time to develop into their arrogant egoistic attitude. Just remember most TV sportscasters are arrogant and egoistic and are
blinded by reality. Their grammar is atrocious. Most of them couldn't put two
sentences together without "um, and, uh, you know, I mean, or like." Is the MTN all of the above, yes. Is it a poort contract, yes. Just pray
that it survives. The President's of the MWC need to put some strong pressure
on Comcast and get things moving. WHy they ever allowed Comcast to exclude them
from negotiatins with other networks is beyond me. Dumb is as dumb
I totally dislike the Mountain... not just because of their HORRIBLE and WEAK
signal to a few local teams - but because of their LAME ANNOUNCERS. I see
Marius Payton is on vacation - good! Todd is poor, too. They look especially
poor after seeing professional coverage on ESPN.
We really turned them on their heads out here in Oklahoma. They can't believe
they lost to BYU...still.We want OU to win the Big XII so we can hang our
undefeated hats on the win over the Big XII champs.
BYU vs. Florida for the national title!
I love it when these elitists are held accountable for the idiotic things they
say. Nothing was sweeter than watching Barry Switzer twist in the wind during
the '08 Sugar Bowl halftime show, having made an utter fool of himself.Aside from parity, I'd argue college football is more popular than ever
because the emergence of this battle between the blue-bloods and the
blue-collars. The have-not's of college football have something to be proud of,
and something to fight for.
That fact that the "little guys" are irritating guys like Griese puts a smile on
If 3 things happend all of the MWC's problems would go away. 1)Become an
automatic qualifier 2)Get on Dish and cable nationwide 3)lose the
vegas bowl. just fix these 3 easy things and all will be well
