Thank you Mr. Bennett. I'm behind you 100% and hope you receive full support from Congress. We should be representing and caring for those who are legal US Citizens and thats it. Those who go through the correct channels to work/live here: Welcome!!
On a side note, I'd love to live across seas or in Mexico. One problem: you can't. One has to be sponsored in Europe to work before a permit is issued and no chance I'd go to Mexico where bribery is the law
Then what does Bennett propose to do with the ID'd illegals? NOTHING!
If the founding fathers had wanted the Census to only count Citizens they would have said so. Amend the Constitution, or drop it
Tah
This would not be necessary if our good senator had voted to secure our borders, prevent illegal immigration and not to provide the benefits of citizenship to those here illegally. Little late Bob!
Better late than never. There is no reason that we should provide representation for people who are not here legally. They can't vote anyway. I understand that becoming a citizen is difficult but if someone thinks America is so great that they just have to live here the first thing they do shouldn't be to ignore our laws and become a criminal.
Dropping illegals from the census MIGHT cause those states/cities to help enforce the law. For instance, California (who basically welcomes them with open arms), if they didn't get additional funding based on illegals, it might FORCE them to re-evaluate their sanctuary status!
BUT - if they weren't here in the first place, we wouldn't need to be worrying about whether to count them or not!!!
What is really funny is this could really hurt Utah's chance of getting the extra seat in Congress that it has been pushing for.
I have a better idea: Just convince the illegal aliens to go home.
How do you do that?
Offer a large reward; say $10,000 to anyone, illegal aliens or not, who turns in somebody who employs illegal aliens. Fine the guilty $15,000 to pay for it.
If the employer exercised due diligence and checked his employees out on eVerify and in other ways, he is held harmless; otherwise, he pays the fine. If he knowingly employed an illegal alien or should have known they were here illegally, through the book at him.
Allow a six month grace period after the law is passed. I bet that not a single employer would be fined. Nobody would risk hiring an illegal alien.
All illegals would go home except those who are here to traffic in drugs and other crimes and they would stand out like a sore thumb.
This program would make immigration law self enforcing.
Senator Bennett is still my Senator until the beginning of 2011. I want him to make good decisions that benefit the Utah and the US.
Even though he has a dismal record on Immigration, the move sounds promising.
We need to remove any rewards and incentives for immigrants to come here and be here illegally.
It shouldn't take so long to immigrate legally.
I am still voting for Cherilyn Eagar.
So now we have a bunch of illegal aliens going into hiding on Census day and the government spends a considerable amount of money trying to ID who actually lives in that residence.
You're voting for Eagar? What has she done? I saw her at a mtg and was asking her about issues affecting our state. She responded with, "Issues don't matter. Those aren't important. It's principles that matter."
I was sorely disappointed. Issues do matter. What do you do to help the people in Western Utah to keep their water? What do you do to help the Vets Hospital aquire the additions its looking for? What do you do to help the continued extraction of resources in Eastern Utah?
These might seem petty but you have to have context in order to be effective. She has none and will therefore not be an effective legislator.
I hope you'll reconsider.
I think Sen bennett, is a coward for proposing such a bill. The state can't not impose any bill that has to do with immigration without the federal government approval. because of your stupid comments, i'm voting for Cherilyn Eagar.
Mr Bennett's plan is nothing more than "feel good" legislation which makes about as much sense as suspenders on a fish.
For starters, how would anybody expect an honest answer to the inquiry from an illegal?
I suppose we could require everybody in the home to be present and show ID.
And who's in charge of protection for census takers against nefarious illegals with guns who don't want their presence reported to the authorities?
Local law enforcement agencies have already let it be known they want no part in immigration enforcement.
Come on, Bob. Use your brain here. Regardless of how nice it would be to have an accurate accounting of illegals in our country, your plan is toothless and displays an embarrassing lack of knowledge on the subject.
Good Ol' Bobby Bennett, enters the Illegal Immigration debate a TAD LATE. Who is this schlub trying to kid? Are the Utah voters that apathetic and stupid as to not realize that Bennett's "position" is just that, a false position and nothing more?
This guy is a definite clown. Time for him to be retired and shown the doorway to Oblivion.
Sorry Bobby, but, your "timely" demand for the Census to ID illegals is nothing more than political grandstanding. Where have YOU been all these years when we, your constituents have been demanding that YOU protect our borders and our sovreignty? MIA. That's OUR Senator, MIA-Bob. Have to love Utah.
What a system we have!
Watch our state fight this, we have over 100,000 illegals in Utah preying on the tax payers and its time action to take place. Anchor babies should also be counted in this group of illegals. Illegals have these anchors dragging their chains as an excuse not to be deported. And who ever had the idea of not identifieing illegals should be arrested as unamerican and a traitor. Repeal all laws that prohibits identifing illegal aliens and their anchors.
There is no such thing as an illegal having an ID, if they had ID then they wouldn't be illegal. Utility bills are not a method of identification.
Illegals should be counted as illegals in the census reports to segregate them from society and america and give us some real numbers as to how many are here in the US. This is one thing many politicians are fighting in this cloak and dagger game they are playing.
Bennett is soft on Illegals Aliens......why not a bill on deporting all illegals and a penalty of prison for those who hire them......
Since when has Attorney General Mark Shurtleff been tough on people here illegally? He told them at a 2006 rally that he would never enforce the laws.
Our census has never allowed people here illegally to be counted towards electoral seats. Nor should they affect the allocation of funds to Federally funded ethnic non profit groups.
"Excellent Point" is right about everything except Utah fighting it. After the 2000 Census Utah failed to get a 4th seat because NC had 260,000 more illegal aliens than Utah had. The 857 shortage was not caused by missionaries or military, for that matter. Utah in no way would fight this bill. It would be very popular in Utah. That is why Sen. Bennett is trying to use it to gain political advantage.
California presently has 3 more seats totally because of its illegal aliens. After the 2010 Census CA will have 5 and possibly 6 seats due to illegal aliens. Is it any wonder that California is behaving in such a desperate manner to keep their illegal aliens?
Bennett should look for ways to get rid of the illegal aliens, not trying find ways to make illegal immigration acceptable. He has always favored allowing illegal aliens to remain in the United States, in order to favor the cheap labor employers.
No more "Bailout Bob" or Mark "I won't arrest you if you're illegal" Shurtleff! Shurtleff is just a younger version of "Bailout Bob". Both of these guys think Utahns have short memories! Get somebody (anybody)new! Chris Cannon didn't think his stance on illegal immigration would matter so we showed him the door. Time to do the same with "Bailout Bob" and Mark "I won't deport you if you're illegal" Shurtleff! Coming from the top law enforcement official in the state, that statement shows Shurtleffs utter contempt for the tax paying citizens!! Just keep voting out elected officials that treat Americans as stupid idiots!!
