It would be great to have the site, with a pool and all the open area. It would be great to have Market Station built and succeed.

Oh, by the way...how much is the price tag???

The older residents in the area are dying off, or moving into care homes, to be replaced with younger families. Where are all these kids going to go to high school, in a generation?

It was sad to see Lavell Edward's high school close down.

Sell it to SLCC, they'll preserve it pretty well, just look at how beutiful the old South high is. I seriously think they need to expand because parking at Redwood is a nightmare and I think this would cater well to some folks on the east side.

Belongs to tax payers. | 5:48 a.m. Sept. 21, 2009
Why should the tax payers be forced to pay for the same property more than once? If the school district is relinquishing its need for the property then the first eligible government department should have it transferred to them at no cost.

This practice of buying and selling property among government agency's is ripping off the tax payers. Once the government owns the property it becomes the property of all tax payers regardless of who uses it. Needed repairs or updating for use is one thing but it is already owned and paid for by taxes.

Government owned property should never be sold for development, it belongs to the people.

With all that space, I can see it being a city complex for South Salt Lake where all their offices could be held there along with a recreational and arts center. The auditorium, gym, swimming pool, fields, etc. would make a perfect City Complex SSL could be proud of and it would give the city a "center". I do hope something can be arranged and preserving the campus is very important for community development. Thanks for thinking ahead and not caving to the almighty dollar that comes with development.
Needs lots of work | 8:59 a.m. Sept. 21, 2009
The building is so old, that a lot of work is needed. That being said, I believe South Salt Lake acquiring the property is a great idea.

The City already has a really nice and up to date community center in the Columbus Center on 500 East.

The purchase of Granite High would be a BIG WASTE OF MONEY for the city of South Salt Lake.

Re: "The building is so old, that a lot of work is needed."

To which building are you referring? GHS is a campus of many buildings - not just one building. Some are old (1926) and some are much newer (1960-70s).

Maybe if they didn't spend $25,000 on a study to point out the obvious, they would have a decent down payment.

I think this is a great idea. I was sad to see Granite High School go. That said, South Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County need to collaborate on acquiring and redeveloping the Granite High School site for the sake of our community. The proposal provides an amenity that is currently lacking, and will go far to provide a sense of community to residents.

One of the City's biggest challenges is to encourage people to invest in the City's existing neighborhoods as homeowners. The Granite High School Redevelopment, along with Fitts Park and the conversion of Woodrow Wilson into a 9-acre park, would create an impressive green axis in the middle of South Salt Lake's oldest and most established neighborhoods. It would greatly enhance the neighborhoods' desirability and perhaps even encourage reinvestment.

This, along with Market Station and the Sugar House Streetcar, will take money and a lot of collaboration with the County, UTA, and Granite School District. But committing the resources and maintaining these relationships will make South Salt Lake a stronger, healthier, and more wonderful community.

LaVell Edwards went to Lincoln High in Orem. He only coached at Granite.
