um...the picture looks more like LaVell and Bobby talking to Burt Reynolds...not each other.

Lavell retired at the end of the 2000 season.
Not Coach Bowden | 12:14 a.m. Sept. 16, 2009
Definitely not Bobby Bowden in the picture. It's FSU alum Burt Reynolds, who played halfback for the Seminoles for a season before suffering career ending injuries.

Great Burt Reynolds picture!

It's Coach Edwards, Coach Bowden, and Burt Reynolds who is an FL ST alumnus.
Funny Picture.... | 5:31 a.m. Sept. 16, 2009
but not to be too critical, it does look like Bowden in the background.

I hope Lavelle and Bobby hook up this week. I would love to hear the moment when Lavelle lets Bobby know what his team is in for. A good friendly jab can be priceless !

6 comments about the photo and none about the story. Very funny.

(Incidentally, I love the fact that Bowden is still coaching.)

Coach Bowden may still be a draw for some recruits, and an institution for fans and financial boosters, but there are many who believe he is continuing on for his own record, vs the good of the FSU program...

Unfortunately, then the players and games become overshadowed by the presence, and suffer for the singular pride of such ambitions.
reservations, please! | 9:17 a.m. Sept. 16, 2009
I'd pay good money to sit a dinner table next to THAT informal conversation. They ought to put it on TV. "Dinner with Bobby and Lavelle". Throw in Paterno and the stories would be ridiculous.
Super Ute Fan | 9:23 a.m. Sept. 16, 2009
I agree with Ute Fan about the following Comment!

"Football is fun, well it is for Ute fans because our team is so good every year. I know its tough for you to lose every year to us, but there is so much more to life than losing football games. Find peace"

BYU is running on empty, and will lose to FSU,TCU, and the U this year. When this happens you will say Super Ute Fan is the greatest!!!

This Saturday, Bowden, wonderful as he is, will be one less win closer to JO PA!

Penn State wins.
BYU Wins. 31-24
RE: True Blue | 9:33 a.m. Sept. 16, 2009
Hey True Blue:

What kind a fantasy world do you live in. Bobby Bowden barley knows who Lavell Edwards is and at that Utah media wants to hype it up to them being great friends. I think that reality is only in Utah. In Florida they don't care about some Mountain West Team and their X coach.
So come back from fantasy world and realize there is only one true football team in Utah. And we all know who that is. U

Anyone read the comment from Bowden about football being "a priority"? Is anybody going to criticize him that it isn't "the priority?" It sounds like he knows what is necessary to avoid burnout. Maybe Bronco Mendenhall knows what he is doing by making football "a priority" but not "the priority!"

I hope Burt Reynolds is at the game. He is awsome.
Utes feel slighted | 10:47 a.m. Sept. 16, 2009
To the Ute posters complaining about this article of a Edwards-Bowden friendship, it seems like the euphoria of the BYU win over OK has worn off and you're back to your old ways of feeling slighted by your big brother in Provo. It must be hard to accept that BYU has a larger-than-life figure in Lavell Edwards when, during his 29 years as BYU coach, the Utes endured decades of coaching incompetence and mediocrity from such legends as Bill Meek, Tom Lovat, Wayne Howard, Chuck Stobart, Jim Fassell and Ron McBride. But cheer up Utes: You've got a Cougar at the helm now in Whit so things are looking brighter!
RE: RE:True Blue | 10:55 a.m. Sept. 16, 2009
'"We had a lot of nice times together," Bowden said this week. "We played some golf, but he's so good he can wear me out. I don't know anyone who didn't like or love LaVell."'

Yeah... it sure sounds like Bowden barely knows who Lavell is. Seriously, some of you Utah fans are either completely clueless or are just so full of you team and the rivalry that you stupidly choose to not give BYU the credit they deserve. What good is it when your team beats BYU if BYU is no good? And when BYU beats you and they are no good, what does that make you?
Nice article | 11:09 a.m. Sept. 16, 2009
This is a nice article and human interest story plus a great picture.
JBH | 11:11 a.m. Sept. 16, 2009
Geez, I do wish the Utah trolls would stay off of the comment boards for BYU stories. Even after your success last season you can't control your obsession to be like the Big Boy in the state?
RE: 9:33 | 12:03 p.m. Sept. 16, 2009
Outside of Utah, when someone hears "the U", they generally think of The University of Miami, not Utah. BYU has had a better football program over the years, and only in about the past decade has Utah caught up (and I'll admit, in some ways surpassed). But BYU still has a stronger reputation nationally then Utah. So maybe you should get out of your fantasy world. Also, did you even read the article? Bobby Bowden obviously knows Lavell Edwards better than just barely knowing who he is.
What the? | 12:38 p.m. Sept. 16, 2009
Once again a great article becomes UTE FAN fodder. I am so glad you provide such insight as the U bing the ONLY football team in Utah. Oh would this be the same football team who struggled against power house teams like San Jose State? Keep being a fans but stop being ignorant fans.
Knowwhat | 1:12 p.m. Sept. 16, 2009
Just to settle things once and for all, the U of U was first established in 1850, the earliest roots of BYU show it being established in 1862. Therefore now the little coogies can no fer(utah county slang) certain they are the little brothers.
P,J. | 1:52 p.m. Sept. 16, 2009
This is gonna be a fun game. Can Max Hall put up gaudy numbers against this FSU defense that is supposedly the fastest (according to the D-coord) in his long tenure there? And can the cougs contain the most athletic qb they have seen yet in Ponder? Should be interesting in an electric atmosphere.
Re: Knowwhat | 2:15 p.m. Sept. 16, 2009
that settles it once and for all. You can be the big brother. I still don't care! Now please go beg for attention somewhere else.
Educated | 2:17 p.m. Sept. 16, 2009
You might want to get your facts straight, and go to history class, because the University of Utah was founded by Brigham Young. So you little Uties might want to get an education at another University because apparently they don't teach you anything at the "great" U.
Nole N Utah | 12:20 a.m. Sept. 17, 2009
It's a fact....Bobby and Lavell have been friends for over 20 years. That's been common knowledge in the FSU community since the first game they coached aainst one another.
