Playing in tropical paradise is one thing, playing at LES is entirely different. Florida St. will have the altitude to deal with, which someone said a well conditioned athlete could handle until about 6000 ft. I believe Provo is at about 5500, so pretty close. The other thing is the physical nature of BYU's team and the size advantage we have. Florida St. O-line is SMALL. They are even smaller than Tulanes. They may be athletic mobile guys but they are not very big. They only outweigh our defensive front by 24 lbs. per guy. In contrast we have a 47 pound advantage over theirs. Our guys can move too, and they've shown it. The best way on defense to corrall the Seminoles speed is to flex out the linebackers and evenly spread every guy to cover the passing game and to see if we can bring pressure with 3 guys against an undersized o-line like theirs. We can contain the run up the middle we just need to cover the edges and we can snuff them out.
The other thing is our awesome fans! How will the noles handle the 65,000 screaming fans?
I sure hope this is the week we see BYU fall.
The biggest issue is whether or not Florida State will develop a pass defense by then. So far, it has been completely non-existent, and if it stays that way, BYU will score at will. If they tighten up the secondary, and if the offense can hold up under the pounding they will get from BYU's defense, FSU will have a chance.
Watching FSU, I see potential for a fierce, very intense game. They should have beaten an under-rated Miami team. They looked past last week's game to BYU. They will come very hungry. I think the Cougars can win but we need to stay loose and confident against a determined and very scrappy team.
I am glad we are playing great teams like OU and FSU. ESPN has told us that "big" schools don't want to play BCS "cinderella's" because they may loose which would ruin their season. So instead, teams like USC play San Jose State and win big and with big numbers. I was told by a USC fan/neighbor that "big" schools will continue to play easy non-league schools because it is good for the sport because these outclassed schools share the gate revenue that they normally would never see. Well, when the BCS "cinderellas" are on the verge of a BCS bowl game, they are told by the BCS and the big schools they they don't belong in the BCS league because their schedule is too weak. Hello! Sounds like a catch 22 to me. If the best schools won't schedule you, how can you ever earn your way to #1 by the BCS? That answer is never! Last year was a great example of that with University of Utah finishing undefeated and #2. Talk about unfair! At least BYU had 1984!!! Let's have a play-off so there will no more disputes!
It's good to read that BYU doesn't want two for one deals with other teams anymore. (You play at our place twice and we'll come to your place once.)
Now it's time to get the game officials situation straitened out. Weren't the BYU-OU game officials from the Big 12, and aren't the officials for the FSU from the ACC?
How is this reasonable?
Now we know why you are called "Little Jimmy". You are a BYU-hater. What team do you cheer for? None I guess, you just cheer against others.
This is the week we will see BYU put haters like Little Jimmy Brady to shame.
RISE AND SHOUT!!!
The Cougars of BYU are beginning to "rise and shout" in their playing on the field--this is very good--let's hope it continues. The game this Sat. vs FSU will be a precursor to the TCU game in that FSU and TCU both have speed and athletes. SO, we'll see how well BYU fares against FSU in those departments then that will be an indication how they can fare against TCU. If the FSU game ends like the Tulane game (I hope so), then the same could be indicative of the TCU game. Good Luck Cougars-blitz the heck out of FSU. Go DEFENSE!
Altitude of Provo, UT: 4,549 ft
The atmosphere at LES will be awesome. It will be even more electric than the UCLA game last year. The first home game of the year against a big-name opponent.....I actually expect a similar outcome as last year's UCLA game. Maybe not a 59 point blowout, but I expect it to get away from FSU early.
I am anxiously waiting for Brother Obama to legislate the BCS into a national championship play-off. Have faith brethren and sistren, it's coming.
The fact is that BYU and Utah simply need to continue playing ball well until the evidence of their skill is irrefutable. Sports journalists will rank them accordingly (if the journalists are worth half their salt and don't vote like homers). If a number 1 ranked team ends up at the Holiday Bowl it will simply make the BCS lose more cred than they can afford. The system is based on good, old-fashioned American capitalism. If the public will pay to be entertained at games between a certain set of teams, so let it be.
Read an article this morning in which a BCS guru said it is impossible for BYU to have a perfect season AND get into the national championship game because the coaches poll only moved them to 12 once they beat Oklahoma.
Not that I expect BYU to be in the Rose Bowl but it shows how unfair the system is. Let's say that BYU really turned it on and beat every team on the schedule 70-0. No matter how good a season BYU had they cannot play in the biggest game in January because of one coahces poll in early September.
Tell me that is an honest system?!
And for the BYU haters out there, Utah had the same crud against them last year. The way they dominated Alabama, something Florida couldn't do and it was a home game for Florida!
The system is rigged, we all know this. So now we play for respect...and a bone.
Oh vey!
It is time for BYU to show they can play with the big boys. Was OU a fluke? We will find out this week. It is time to put up or shut up. BYU has a chance to show it deserves a top ten ranking or prove the naysayers right.
I hope BYU shows up and makes a statement by beating a great team in FSU.
Provo's elevation is more around 4,500 feet, not 5,500 feet.
Well the big issue is no TV if you are a Directv subscriber. Versus and Dtv are in a price war and guess who loses? Anyone know any other options? Not that it does a lick of good to call them they don't care. Haven't seen the tv guy for this paper say anything about it, too busy covering the soaps and Leno.
Being favored by only 7 points with such a difference in rankings shows that BYU still gets no respect. One of CBS College Sports analysts picked Florida State to upset BYU this Saturday.
Lavell always said it's tough to get a team up for more than one or two big games each season, but BYU certainly has to get up for this one. And there are a few more down the road...
Of course, BYU has already beat the oddsmakers in the first two game.
Altitude smaltitude, BYU should win this game. I believe they are a better team, period. I watched the Miami game and it appeard to me that, both teams had great atheletes that were not playing as a team. Both Miami and FSU made a lot of mistakes and looked sloppy. I do think FSU is capable of beating BYU and beating them bad. I do not think they will. I am expecting the cougars to play their best game of the season so far and beat FSU in a very exciting game.
PS: LITTLE JIMMY BRADY, DON'T LET THOSE KIDS TAKE YOUR LUNCH MONEY. REMEMBER, YOUR TUFF TOO !
I'm expecting a game similar to the Miami-BYU game in 1990. Too many assume that speed is the predominant factor, when good technique, good decision making, team work, and attitude/confidence, are equally as important.
Florida State has speed. BYU is not quite as fast, but has better speed than last season, plus all of the other factors.
The Seminoles will probably score more than the Sooners did, but BYU's defense will be stout and the BYU offense is just hitting it's stride.
BYU 35
FSU 21
Go COUGARS!
We are dealing with some people who are stuck in the past. One announcer said that "college football won't recover until the traditional football powers are good again".They can't make any room an their heads for non-BCS schools like BYU, Utah and Boise St. to be any good.Anytime a non-traditional power wins against a BCS name team the focus is on the "fluke", "weakness", or "off" game of the big name school. They can't imagine that a non-BCS could win simply because they are the better team and program.
