Will the Governor take the money, or do the right thing for future generations?

I would assume more uranium has been taken from the State of Utah than from anywhere else. It only makes sense that, properly contained, waste -- from wherever -- should be allowed to be stored in Utah. For that matter, the state should be doing all it can to bring nuclear power to the state. Several nuclear power plants throughout the state is "the right thing for future generations."

It sounds like HEAL is opposed to anything that this company wants to do.

HEAL and it's partner CARE have been opposed to both the nuclear waste storage but also the destruction of the Chemical weapons. I am neutral on the nuclear material. But thank goodness the State and the DOA has kept us safety and on track with the chemical weapons destruction or we would still have the nerve gas around. Now we just need to destroy the remaining mustard agent.

Taking waste from Italy is like inviting the world's toxic waste. Decommissioning of old power plants all over the UK and Europe means other countries are searching for a place to dispose of their waste. It's absurd to utilize the (limited) capacity licensed to Energy Solutions to store foreign waste, when we have plenty to deal with right here. And btw, the people of Utah don't agree with taking foreign waste. Governor Herbert should listen to the people, not the businesses making money off the pollution.

To "HEAL"

It sounds like H.E.A.L. (Healthy Environment Alliance of Utah) is a group of citizens who care about Utah. I thank them for their efforts.

"people of Utah" I say take the money! Mary doesn't speak for me!

Energy Solutions already has it in the bag so it would be stupid to turn down the offer. If Utah turns it down ES will keep all the money!

Be smart. It has nothing to do with our recession and all to do with passing on a Billion dollars.

So you would sell your state out for a buck.

What are you going to do when the state turns into a big nuclear waste site?

Ask the government for help in cleaning it up?

Utah, too beautiful to waste.
Dude | 7:11 p.m. Sept. 15, 2009
hopefully the Gov. will do the right thing and say no to this garbage. If not im sure we can riot in the streets to change some minds :)

I love how everyone complains how there is limited storage. When ES tried to expand three times in the past year the same people said no and now they are afraid it will fill up.

Sell the State out for a buck? Is Clive to beautiful to waste? Have you driven out to Wendover? Show me what's beautiful off the Clive exit!

We are not selling our State we are leasing out 400 acres and to Italy goes 4 acres. Unless our State consists of only 400 acres, I think your assuming our "whole" state will become a nuclear waste dump, is a little off base.

Drive out to ES and see for yourself the "HUGE" threat they impose.....get real.
My Vote | 11:35 a.m. Sept. 16, 2009
If Governor Herbert "buys" into this deal to take the Energy Solutions money, he will not have my vote in 2010 - and I am a life-long conservative Republican.
Big Al | 11:36 a.m. Sept. 16, 2009
So is HEAL Utah really just the Anti-EnergySolutions organization? They appear to only target this one company. With that, I'd rather have Italian money paying for Utah's deficit than more of my own. I'm going broke as it is...

Health insurance up 27% over 2008
Rent up 3% over 2008
Raises 0% since 2007

HealUtah doesn't have a vote since they can't vote. But I can vote. Gov. Herbert, as a constituent, I would like you to allow the waste to go to Clive only. That way our state is still beautiful, we create jobs and collect revenues without burdening the citizenry. Easy decision.

The only toxic or nuclear waste that should be stored by Energy Solutions or any other waste disposal company should be waste produced in Utah. If Utah decides to recieve waste from any other state or foriegn country, the precedent will be set and Utah will become the toxic waste dump and Nuclear waste dump of the world. The bribe from Energy Solutions may be tempting, but the decision to store toxic waste in Utah from outside of Utah will adversely affect us and future generations of people who chose to call Utah home. Let us not sell our God-given birthright for a mess of pottage!
re: Jon | 6:10 p.m. Sept. 16, 2009
With your logic we would then have to store all Uranium that was sent throughout the world that was mined here in Utah!!!!

ES is on one square mile of our states land. Hardly could Utah become the toxic waste dump of the world.

The land out by Clive is already toxic from the Great Salt Lake and the Military Bombing Range.

If your going to comment on opposing ES, please at least go visit their facility and become informed. I think with the knowledge of what you will learn will GREATLY change your view!

Re: Jon B. Holbrook  | 11:25 a.m. Sept. 17, 2009
This might come as a shock to you, but Utah sends its Radioactive Waste to the State of Utah.
