"Do your best" per Gordon B. Hinckley? This sounds almost what President Obama told school kids to do that some Utah Republicans thought was "socialistic" or "liberal lies."

The funniest part was when President Monson talked about when a man came to talk with President Kimball about having his son's mission call changed. After the man finally left President Kimball said, "Aren't some parents unusual." In his talk President Monson then said, "I might have used a different word, but President Kimball wasn't in the Navy like I was." He then said, "That wasn't part of the remarks I prepared."

I was at home working today and watched this whole broadcast - it was so more than awesome! Lighthearted and fun, while still inspirational. Especially when Monson told a story where he said he would have chosen a different word than a past prophet to describe a parent whining about his son's mission call. "I was in the Navy, he wasn't!" (or something like that). I laughed out loud! It was hilarious!

[Although, I'm pretty sure it wasn't the same choice word that Obama used when caught on an open mic when he described a brotha of his.]

To Dixie Dan - I'm sure lot of people regardless of their political affiliation were worried if Obama didn't read from his teleprompter what he had published the day before...you really never know what will come out of his mouth for sure. I trust Monson =)

When will Monson speak out on real moral issues, like helping the poor and the immorality of our current healthcare system?
re: re issues | 5:55 p.m. Sept. 15, 2009
the church has done more for the poor and people effected disasters than many organizations put together. Healthcare needs alot of help but not from obama
Re: Real Issues | 5:58 p.m. Sept. 15, 2009
President Monson taught today to learn from the actions and teachings of past prophets. President Ezra Taft Benson taught "The Lord works from the inside out. The world works from the outside in. The world would take people out of the slums. Christ takes the slums out of people, and then they take themselves out of the slums. The world would mold men by changing their enviroment. Christ changes men, who then change their enviroment. The world would shape human behavior, but Christ can change human nature."
Re: Real Issues, posted 5:58pm | 6:38 p.m. Sept. 15, 2009
Thank you for the quote from President Benson. You hit the nail right square on the head
small clarification | 6:41 p.m. Sept. 15, 2009
The naval term President Monson was referring to in his talk is a "Dilbert" (aka screwball or oddball).

Also, the favorite food of both President Grant and President Lee was bread and milk, truly still a favorite of many today.

What I think: | 8:01 p.m. Sept. 15, 2009
Well, I am just so blessed and happy to be led by a prophet that is real and faithful as President Monson. It makes getting through the filth of today's world a little easier when you have a leader to follow like him. President Monson and prophets before him, can help you know what the Savior would have us do. We are not alone and no matter the political chaos around us, there is a certainy with Jesus Christ and His anointed prophet. Great talk. Thank you, Pres. Monson.
Amazing | 8:28 p.m. Sept. 15, 2009
Real prophetic.

We are so fortunate to have President Monson, the prophet of God lead us in these latter troublesome days. His steady hand is so reassuring, and comforting. God bless him, keep him safe, and speak to us through his voice, and help us find peace, and safety in our country.
David in CA | 9:46 p.m. Sept. 15, 2009
Looking forward to seeing President Monson's address to the BYU community earlier today. Had to work today, so I couldn't see it yet. Hope the video recording turns out... Thanks for and to BYU-TV for making events like this possible to us who live beyond the Utah borders.

Kind of like the first time Pres. Monson spoke as the Prophet in General Priesthood about wiggling his ears to beat the boy in the audience who was mimicking him and then how he said "My wife said I shouldn't say that."

God bless our dear prophet!

President Monson has long been a favorite of mine. Watching him grow and mature within the Gospel has been a wonderful thing to observe. There has never been a time in my life when I did not trust him or his leadership. In days long gone we have shared mutual friends and I can honestly say, this world would be a far better place to live, if it followed and ruled per the principles of the Gospel, along with leadership such as Presidents of the LDS Church both past and present have provided.
Ripley | 9:05 a.m. Sept. 16, 2009
Is that prophesy or just his opinion? Do we believe it or not?
Anonymous | 9:53 a.m. Sept. 16, 2009

I am thankful for a prophet, a livng prophet in this time of history. For those who responded, that the Church doesn't address the needs of health care or taking on the needs of the poor or those out of work, I dare say, the Church has a very organized system of helping the poor and needy. It is probably the most organized system in the world. We are taught to look after our own famlies and then if more help is needed, go to our bishops. They can prayerfully access the problems of health care or food. All temperal matters have a spiritual side. Great blessings come from helping those who are in trouble, with health issues or financial problems.
After a long illness, my father was in the hospital at the Houston Medical Center. There were no ICUs back in the early 1960s. Our insurance would not pay for the special nurses, who would stay in my father's room, after a difficult operation. The Relief Society sisters of our small Houston ward stayed night after night, to be with him, ready to call a nurse of doctor if the need arose. I am thankful.

TO Ripley,

That's the beauty of the Church. If you don't like something the prophet says, then you just justify not doing it by saying it was his opinion.

>GBH and dueling

It was in 1997, I believe. Elder Nelson had just given a talk praising President Hinckley.

President Hinckley's reply was something like "I thought we were conducting General Conference. It's turned out to be a funeral...He's taken extreme liberty. I challenge him to a duel down in the basement of the tabernacle after this session."

And at the end of the session President Hinckley said "I've repented. Thank you for your kind words. We'll postpone the duel."

As far as I know, they never had the duel. :)

Yes, and where do the prophets lead us? To Christ. That, in fact, is exactly what a true prophet will always do; show others how to find Christ in there lives.

No. Some of us view it as one of the most wonderful blessings possible to be able to listen to the words of a true prophet of God, called in our time as were Abraham, Moses, and others in ancient times. That's something to "gush" over, friend.

As a young man seated in the choir seats of a stake conference in 1963 I recall the brother conducting the service saying something to the effect, "we'll now be privileged to hear from the Lord's newest Apostle, Elder Thomas S. Monson." I had a special feeling then as he stood & approached the pulpit. He's been as true & unwavering as any of the other Prophets he described in his talk to BYU students for the past 46 years and longer. Thanks President Monson.

I'm getting REALY tired of hearing this kind of stuff. "Oh, the Mormons don't worship Jesus Christ!" I'm sorry dear brother or sister. . . I TRUELY don't believe that when you start talking about Christ to people in your ward they change the conversation to talking about President Monson. . . PLEASE!

Christians worship the the God of the Bible, the uncreated creator,God by definition is infinite not finite, even the Agnostic Sarte, knew it makes no sense to worship a finite God. Mormonism worships and exalted man,one who evolved(exhalted) to Godhood.

That is not, never has been, and never will be in the Bible. Christianity was desecrated by that heresy by uninspired scholars as part making Christianity thoroughly UNbiblical.

Wow!..what a wonderful address from President Monson..he, like his predecesors, is a true prophet and dedicated leader who's leadership I find very inspiring and motivating and I will forever be most grateful for the lords blessing of having one of his anointed to lead the church on the earth as He did anciently.....Go President Monson !..(from New Zealand)
Debora from Vancouver | 1:47 a.m. Sept. 17, 2009
For years I didn't attend church. However, my Heavenly Father never left me alone. He sent constant reminders of His love for me. Once the HT and VT found me, they loved me back to church. Not judging my actions, just loving me for who I was and all of my flaws. The missionaries brought me a video. "The Special Witnesses" It was the first time I'd heard any of the Apostles and Prophet speak. Each one had a strong testimony of Jesus Christ. Each had a distinct voice, that when heard (at least by me) I knew what they said was true and that they were ALL men called by God. Pres. Monson's voice stood out among them. Now that I'm back in church and have heard many leaders speak and teach, I know that each of them are ALL called of God. The Spirit has testified this to me and I'm so glad that I can recognize it for myself and I wish others had this same gift. Truth, when taught in the Spirit is easy to recognize. I LOVE MY CHURCH AND ALL IT'S LEADERS!

Wow -- How many negative tangents can be created by negative people searching for something negative to say. President Monson is a good man with SOMETHING to say, instead of rambling on and on with a negative agenda, as some who have "spoken" here appear to have. If you don't like the Mormons or their beliefs, why are you reading articles about them and then commenting harshly? Why not just go on with your life and leave others to their beliefs?

In response to KathNavy:

It is sad that people can't just be happy for the happinest of others. I'm thinking that all the negative people are people who must be very miseralbe in their lives and don't want anyone else to be happy. Why else would they waste their time in tearing down others? These are the people that need our prayers. Life is to short to bicker all the time.

grandmagreat | 10:44 a.m. Sept. 17, 2009
Over the many years that I have been on the earth, the words that come from the Prophets mouth are words to live by. I was not privileged to grow up in Utah,so didn't have access to the Church leaders as many youth do today. We also did not have so many people making bad remarks about the church. However, I did receive a special blessing when I was expecting my first child and my husband was overseas fighting for our freedom, President George Albert Smith and I shared the same Doctor. One day he asked me where the Daddy was that I was alone in the Doctors office. I told him he was in the Navy. He stood up and put his hands on my head and said bless you sister, he will come home safely. What a great blessing, he did come home safely, and we are soon going to celebrate our 65th wedding anniversary, and that baby will be 64 next month. Yes the Presidents of the Church are truly Modern day Prophets, we should follow. We need to ignore those who would deprive themselves of such a blessing.
