Does this also mean that students and children can't defend themselves from these bullies? The best method for a child being bullied is giving the bully a bloody nose. This has a big curative affect to stop the bullies.
Regardless of how many policies or rules they create, the bully will always be a bully. Self defense has been the only means to stop bullies and the younger the better. Bullies don't like to see their own blood or anyone defending themselves. Bullies have a problem with authority and others who challenge them and love to provoke their peers.
Not surprised...public school athletics always did have too much priority. I'm for getting back to the books...and while you're at it, why doesn't Utah switch to school uniforms...so much easier on parents who have to pay for the latest fashion and kids that wear uniforms no longer have to worry about wearing "the right thing" to be cool...now everyone wears the same thing and kids can focus on what matters most-->learning!!!
Note that the Canyons School District gave a statement but would not return phone calls or actually discuss problems. It has been my experience that public school administrators only give lip service to bullying, but in reality, could not care less about the welfare of any of their students. This is why I had to pull my child out of a Granite District school last year and enroll her in a private school (that actually doesn't tolerate brutality).
Bullying was an issue that public schools would not even address on an administrative level until the unfortunate incident at Columbine High School, where teachers were injured. The primary (and only) motive for them to address it now is to preserve their own welfare. They still do not care about students AT ALL.
Any student who is selected to participate in high school athletics is held to a high standard in their conduct on and off the field/court. Being chosen for a school team is a priviledge, and any student athlete who does not understand this should be swiftly eliminated from the program when they lower their standards with unappropriate behavior as was illustrated in this story.
I hope that they are not only looking at student athletes but at High School Coaches. Coaches can be as big if not bigger bullies than the athletes themselves, where do you think that they learn that this behavior is ok? I am hoping that all school districts are paying attention, especially Granite School District! If you don't think that there are coaches breaking every one of the rules listed in this article you are fooling yourselves!
In the case stated a student athlete from Brighton wanted to transfer to Jordan after being recruited by the Jordan Baseball Coach with promises of scholarships and the pro-draft. The student athlete played Varsity football and sophomore basketball for Brighton. When the Utah High Scool Athletic Association ruled that he had to sit out for 1 year, his dad hired a lawyer and claimed he was leaving Brighton because of hazing.
A full investigation was conducted and nobody was hazed. Rep. Stevens from Draper threatened the new green Superintendant of Canyons district and the kid was allowed to play football this year for Jordan.
This is a case were High School coaches and parents gave terrible advice to kids playing a kids game and are claiming anything they can to get their way.
Athlete's are forgetting that when they make a team they are representing not only themselves but the school. There standards need to be higher as well as the coaches. It sounds like Brighton problem stemmed from coaches not being visible enough in the locker room and on the field. Basicly letting the team run them. It is sad that those young people at Brighton suffered bullying and hazing at the hands of there teammates. Good on those students that came forward because they were bullied and/or hazed. I hope the players were punished for their actions because if not it will only continue on with someone else being hurt and the chain will only continue.
I agree with the Alta coach it is not only the athlete but other students in the school that bully and haze. Sooner or later our schools will be much safer if a law can be put in place for those students that bully and haze others for what they do or have done to others. I hope that the student who transfered to Jordan is doing well knowing that from this article there is a big problem at Brighton High.
Hey Concerned Parent.....Before you single out Brighton, maybe you better understand that perhaps you don't get it, how do you define hazing, if it is the standard "Hey Freshman or Sophmore, or any one, get the water" then you have no experience in life, how many Presidents of Corporate America get the water and snacks for a board meeting???? If I am not mistaken, it usually is the secretary or someone down the line of command? if that is the case, then every aspect of todays life is a haze??? and maybe we better teach people that this is simply life and learn how to deal with it. Not being a Brighton follower, I am sure that if this bullying/hazing was of a physical nature or if those so called "kids" were really Bullied or Hazed in it's true sense, you would have seen it as a lead in story on TV. MAYBE just MAYBE there were some dishonest individuals that were only thinking of their owns sons personal agendas????? Now that sound more like the truth. Come on lets teach our youth to battle through adversity rather than just take the easy out.......
